Final Check of
Corn-Hog Compliance.
Corn-hog contract signers win
make their final statements of com
pliance in Nebraska beginning De
cember 3rd. Local men employed as
supervisors by the county corn-hog
association will visit the farms, count
up the hogs left on them, and help
the signers fill out the records need
ed to finish the official compliance
blanks in the county office.
Practically all the men employed
as supervisors in August and Sept
ember will be used again in an at
tempt to get the field work done in
a hurry. If the farm visits can be
completed while the weather and the
roads are good, much time and ex
pense can be saved the members of
th eassociation.
The 193 4 corn-hog contract year
ends at midnight, November 30.
Compliance blanks and other mater
ials to be used by the supervisors
were received in the county office
this week. Clerks and typists will
soon be busy getting the form ready
for the men to take to the farms.
Froof of compliance at thi3 time
will entitle the contract signers to
their final payment of $2.00 per
head on their hogs. This final pay
ment will bring thousands of dollars
into this county within a few months.
It is estimated that mcst of the sign
ers in the county will show one hun
dred per cent compliance for the en
tire year.
Community committeemen and the
allotment committee of the county
corn-hog association will approve
the statements obtained by the
supervisors on the farms. Clerks in
the county office will have several
days work on the blanks before they
are ready for the committeemen.

PWA CONTRACTS APPROVED
Make Provisions for Seed.
With the possibility that seed corn
will not be nearly so readily avail
able next spring as it is now, Cass
county farmers are being urged to
make arrangements immediately for
their supply for planting.
While there is considerable eld
corn still left in practically all Ne
braska counties, it is moving out
rapidly and indications are that by
next spring, much of the corn will
be fed up so that seed will not be
readily available. 1'. 11. Stewart, ex
tension agronomist at the Nebraska
college of agriculture, has notified
the Agent that surveys indicate that
this entire section of the country is
Koing to be short on feed and that
by corn planting time there will be
a real scramble for seed.
Farmers are being urged to pick
enough corn for seed from old corn
on hand or from a new crop if avail
able. If they do not have corn of
their own, arrangements chould be
made to secure this from a neighbor.
Thus far, the government has not
purchased corn for seed purposes in
Nebraska and this may not be dene,
Stewart says. Farmers are advi.sed
to play safe by taking steps at once
to secure seed for their normal corn
acreage. Old corn 13 somewhat slow
er to germinate than new corn but it
will make satisfactory seed and will
yield as well as that from the 103 4
crop.
Seed corn, as farmers know, can
not be moved long distances satis
facorily, and therefore it is neces
sary to get locally adapted seed. This
prevents the shipping in cf seed corn
from other districts, unless the area
from which it comes lias similar
growing conditions. It is safer to use
homegrown seed than to use seed of
unknown origin, even though it may
have a very fine appearance.
Omaha. Contracts totaling near
ly?700,000 far public work in Ne
braska were approved by PWA En
gineer Latenser.
The largest were the work on the
Columbus-Genoa and Sutherland pro
jects. Martin-Day company of Lin
coln won an award of $1 CO, 920 for
the former and Iiardv.ick & Co.,
Memphis, Tenn., one for $3S0,476
for the latter. The Columbus-Genoa
contract calls for the excavation of
3,300,000 cubic yards of dirt at a
price of 9239,250. Other bids ap
proved included:
Omaha Steel Works, $ 19,350 for
radial gates on the Sutherland pro
ject. Philips & Davis, Inc., Kenton, O.,
$27,000 for roller bearing gates on
the same project.
R. Deal, Kenesaw, $3,850 for work
on the new Kenesaw water works.
to town three times and apparently
were looking for something or some
one. Finally, the younger gunman
took the wheel and drove to a point
about three-quarters of a mile from
Dawson where he stopped the car
and ordered Ilalbert to get out after
the other robber had taken the money
from the cab company owner.
The larger gunman told Ilalbert,
"You are a pretty good guy," and
gave him a dollar, with instructions
that he catch a ride back home. The
gunmen then drove away in the car.
Officers were quickly notified by Ilal
bert who hurried to a farm house,
but no trace of the gunmen was
found. Both robbers, Ilalbert said,
were well dressed and wore tan overcoats.
