STUDY CROWN POINT ESCAPE
Washington. The justice depart
ment said it is studying a report of
an Investigation inaugurated to de
termine whether any federal stat
utes were violated In connection
with the escape of John Dillinger
from the Lake county jail at Crown
Point, Ind., and the events that fol
lowed. The department said the In
quiry was conducted by Its own In
vo8tigators and that the report has
been received here, but that the con
tents will not be divulged until a
thoro review has been completed.
The report is understood to deal
not only with the escape of the no
torious criminal, but with the al
leged abduction recently by J. Ed
ward Barace, deputy attorney gen
eral of Indiana, of eigh.t "witnesses"
to the affair. The "witnesses" were
alleged to have been held in a Monti
cello hotel, and in one at Indianapolis.
SLAM KING PROLONGS STAY
1
Bangkok, Siam. The ministry of
the royal household Is shipping two
big automobiles from the royal gar
age to King Prajadhipok in London,
it was revealed. This was generally
believed to indicate the monarch
proposes to prolong his stay abroad,
with the probability of abandoning
his decision to abdicate becoming
more remote than ever.
The Siamese capital meanwhile
was calmly awaiting a government
announcement on the subject.
BOARD PASSES RELIEF LEVY
New York. After a personal plea
from the floor by Mayor LaGuardia,
the board of aldermen passed the
$60,000,000 relief levy, including a
2 percent sales tax from which food
is exempted. Despite the protests of
business organizations, the levy
seemed certain to pass the board of
estimate after a public hearing Wed
nesday and become law.
