Alvo News
W. C. Timlin was shelling and de
livering corn to the Rehmeier eleva
tor in Alvo on Wednesday of last
week.
Mr. and Mrs. George Braun, of
South Bend, were visiting in Alvo
one day last week, being guests of
Mrs. William Yeager.
August Stander, of Elmwood, was
a visitor in Alvo last Wednesday af
ternoon and was meeting with his
many friends here as well as looking
after some business matters.
D. E. Sheesley and son, George,
were in Murdock last Saturday, where
they secured their corn-hog allotment
checks and were among many others
who were there for that special pud
pose. Robert Coster, who has been as
sisting with the receiving of grain at
the Rehmeier elevator for some time
past, has been feeling rather poorly
during the past few days and not able
to work.
Mrs. Jennie Rouse who has been
so poorly and had to remain in bed
for seme time past, is at this time
reported as being much better and
is able to be up a portion of the time
and is showing good improvement.
Mrs. E. L. Nelson has been feeling
quite poorly the past week and has
had to give up her work a portion of
the time, especially at the store.
Her many friends are hoping that this
good woman may soon be able to re
sume her daily tasks.
Frank Taylor and wife and A. T.
Snedgen and family, the latter of
Lincoln, where Mr. Snedgen is em
ployed as a teacher and his wife has
a position in the state house, were
dinner guests at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Soren Petersen on last Sunday.
Mrs. Simon Rehmeier took Mrs.
Soren Petersen and their little girl,
Ruth Ann, to Lincoln, where she un
derwent an operation for the removal
of her tonsils, which had been giving
the little lady a great deal of annoy
ance. Since that time she has been
getting along very nicely.
Miss Betty Jane Briggs, of Wahoo,
was a guest in Alvo on Wednesday of
last week, together with her cousin,
Miss Beverly Briggs, of Plattsmouth.
the two young ladies enjoying a very
line time as they accompanied their
grandfather, the Jou 1 field man,
on his trip about the county in search
of new3.
More water, is the crying nee4f
the farming community as well as in
the towns of this territory. Last week
Delbert Skinner sank his well deeper
in order that he might secure more
water for his stock and was well
pleased, for he now has an abundance
of good cold water. Chick Roelofsz
is another who has made his- well
deeper and attained like results.
Uncle Charles II. Kirkpatrick, who
has been very poorly at his home for
some time and who has always been
able to get out to the polls and vote,
thought it very bad if he should not
be able to get out and cast his vote
this year. Although not feeling as
well as usual, he did get out and
came down town and voted, that he
might feel he was doing his part for
the country and performing the act
of a good citizen.
John Banning was a visitor in the
county seat last Tuesday night, or
rather, early Wednesday morning, he
being delegated to take ,the election
returns there at the conclusion of the
count of ballots. He arrived in the
wee hours of the morning, but found
the office of County Clerk George R.
Sayles open to receive him and take
tare of the returns. In that way, the
Cass county vote was tabulated by
sunrise of the morning after election.
And it was about that time, when Mr.
Banning arrived home from his trip.

Ran a Pretty Eace
In the contest, for the nomination
for County Commissioner for the third
district, there were three aspirants,
E. H. Armstrong, Wm. Bornemeier
and Henry Backemeyer, all seeking
the republican nomination and an op
portunity to oppose Fred Gorder at
the fall election. The contest was
won by Mr. Backemeyer, but only by
a few votes, as each of these excel
lent gentlemen polled a good vote in
their respective neighborhoods, with
Mr. Backemeyer getting a little the
best of the voting and winning the
nomination.
At the Top cf the World
On Friday, August lOtn, Carl D.

great deal of pleasure to all those who
are making it. They will be home

Will Shell Out Com Crib
The Miller Cereal Mills, of Omaha,
having a large amount of corn stored
in its cribs near the Missouri Pacific

Start Plans for
a Shelter Belt
for the West
Nebraska Headquarters Will Be at
Lincoln To Extend Work
Through Six States.
With establishement of a central
field office at Lincoln, Nebraska,
planned for an early date, the Forest
Service is rushing plans for begin
ning field work on the president's
project for a great shelterbelt of
trees to be planted for 1,000 miles
across the Plains States. In addition
to the general headjuarters at Lin
coln, it is expected that state divi
sional offices will be established in
the capital cities of each of the
str.tes traversed by the belt North
Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska,
Kansas, and Oklahoma and Texas.
Fred Morrell, who has been named
administrative director of the shel
terbelt project by Chief Forester Sil
cox, was in Nebraska last week.
Active work will be started in the
shelterbelt area as soon as the neces
sary organization is completed. Land
leases, seed collection, and nursery
arrangements to supply planting
stock on a large scale will be in
itiated as scon as possible. The press
ing need for emergency relief em
ployment is being taken into con
sideration, the Forest Service stated.
Qualified men are being assigned to
the project from the Forest Service
rolls and are being hired from other
sources to speed up the organization
of the field work.
Dr. Raphael Zon, director of the
Lake States Forest Experiment Sta
tion, will have charge of technical
phases, including the determination
of suitable species to plant in the
various soil types, nursery selection
and practice, planting practice, etc.
The Bureau of Chemistry and Soils
will assist in the study and classi
fication of soils within the shelter
belt region, and the Bureau of Plant
Industry will cooperate actively in
technical service and in the use of
its established nurseries and other
facilities.
Inquiries for information about
the shelterbelt plans are pouring in
to Washington from the region and
from adjoining states to the east
and west. Some criticisms also have
been received, the Forest Service
says, largely to the effect that thou
sands of trees planted in the region
of the proposed shelterbelt ia the
past have failed to survive. It is
pointed out however that other thou
sands of plantings are still surviving,
although the plantings were largely
haphazard, in many cases of species
not especially suited to the region,
and seldom given proper care. The
Forest Service is undertaking the
shelterbelt planing with the benefit
of many years of intensive investiga
tion of tree planting methods and
cultural practices adapted to the dry
land areas. Only trees will be used
which have already been tested and
have shown their adaptability for
shelterbelt use in the region, both in
point of survival of climatic condi
tions and in their protective value.
Approximately 2 million acres in
all will be covered in the forest
strips, to be located about one mile
apart, and the lands will be acquired
through lease or purchase, by co-operative
agreements with the owners,
or by donation. The lands will be
classified according to soil and other
conditions. In the purchase of land
the dominant objective will be tc
determine valuations with equity
both to the landowner and the Unit
ed States.
