August Krecklow was a visitor in Omaha one day last week, taking a truck load of stock to market for farmers of this vicinity and bringing back some merchandise. Mrs. Simmons, of Omaha, an aunt of Herman Rauth, who has been vis iting at the Rauth home for several weeks, returned to her home on last Saturday, being taken up by Mr. and Mrs. Rauth in their auto. Albert Theil, who operates the big school bus for the Murdock schools during the school year, has been transporting children to Manley for the mid-summer vacation school be ing conducted at the St. Patrick's church. Claude Breckenfeld and family of South Omaha, were visiting over the week end at the W. J. Rau home in Manley, Mr. Breckenfeld and Mrs. Rau being brother and sister. Particular Attention to Children Telephone '229 will soon show some permanent im provement and that he will be able to resume work again in the near fu ture, for he has surely been having a long siege of it, and all from a little scratch that many of us would ordi narily think nothing about. Can't be too careful, especially during the hot weather we have been having. SHEEP BUYING PLAN IN DROUGHT STATES BY AAA From Friday's Daily Plans to buy sheep in the drought states, and turn them over to the Federal Surplus Relief Corporation, were announced today by the Agri cultural Adjustment Administration following receipt from Comptroller General McCarl of approval of the expenditure of drought relief funds for that purpose. Approval by the Comptroller Gen eral was given on the basis that the "purchase of sheep and goats, in ad dition to cattle, is necessary to re lieve emergency conditions in the drought stricken areas." Under the program, the govern ment buyers will purchase only ewes, and a flat price of $2 each for ewes one year old or older will be paid. Angora goats also will be bought, and the price will be $1.40 each for animals one year old or older. As in the case of cattle purchases, all animals fit for use will be util ized in providing food supplies for families on relief. Usable sheep will be slaughtered and the meat can ned. It is expected that large num bers of both animals will be used for relief purposes in the states where they are purchased. The buying program will be put into operation at the earliest ossible date and purchases will be confined largely to the most acute drought areas. Purchases will be made as rapidly as disposal permits. Sheep purchased under the pro gram will be processed, as far as pos sible, in local or western packing plants. CEDAR IN DROUTH CLASS Cedar county became the second far northeastern Nebraska county to request emergency drouth classifica tion. The request went forward to Washington for approval. Myrle White, agricultural agent at Hart ington who telegraphed the formal report to Prof. H. J. Gramlich, state director of federal cattle buying, in dicated the request was asked pri marily to farmers there can have the benefit of emergency feed loans. Increased momentum in the drive to get farmers to conserve all pos sible roughages was noted in reports reaching Gramlich from outstate. Practically every farmer in the east ern section is now in the cornfields with binders cutting damaged corn for ensilage or fodder. Rudolph Kal iff, prominent York livestock feeder, told Gramlich that he had bought 75 tons of ensilage from a Colfax coun ty farmer for $5 per ton, delivered to his farm. Pramlich put his support behind the movement to all get CCC re cruits to dig trench silos and help conserve damaged corn. Mr. and Mrs. John L. Tidball and family who have been at Chicago for a short visit at the exposition, have returned home after a very pleasant outing. Michael Hild, who was visiting with friends in Colorado, has return ed to his home here. He made the trip in company with his son, Emil J. Hild and family, of Council Bluffs. The rapidly increase ing number of auto mobile accidents you read of daily should be a warning to all motorists not only to drive carefully but carry complete Hart ford auto insurance! Searl S. Davis O WICKS i :.M) FLOOR Platts. Stats Dank Bldg. Plans Advanced for New Army of Greater Size Attempt to . Bring United States Forces to First Rank Pushed by High Command. Washington. Alarmed by glaring deficiencies in manpower and equip ment, the war department is rush ing completion of a far-reaching plan to lift the army from seventeenth place to front rank in power. How far the department will suc ceed in strengthening the army, now declared by Chief of Staff General MacArthur to be "below the danger line" will depend solely upon con gress, which will be asked to appro priate the necessary funds. The porgram, it was revealed, will call for adequate motorization of all mobile units; modern combat equip ment such as semi-automatic rifles and long range field guns; increases in personnel, and facilities for train ing officers and men. War department officials declined to disclose how much they will ask to finance the program, but express ed hope the administration, eager to assure adequate national defense, will approve the plans and furnish the necessary money. At present, twenty years after the start of the world war, the United States army is relatively weaker than it was just before this country en tered the conflict. High ranking offi cers revealed the army is almost to tally lacking in up to date rifles, tanks, field artillery, anti-aircraft guns and gas masks. Munitions reserves have dropped so low they would not last six weeks if the United States suddenly had to face an emergency. One of the chief worries of the war department is that the troops have had little or no target practice because of the short age of ammunition. One of the weakest plates in the army's defensive armor is the lack of proper motorization. Recommenda tions in the war depatnient program will include addition of a large num ber of motorized fighting units: which will largely replace the obso lescent calvary, for reconnaisance and actual combat. General MacArthur ,in his last re port to Secretary of War Dern, em phasized the need for tanks, of which the United States has fewer than any of the leading powers.
