city council of Weeping Water there
is being a well dug near the pump

and water struck in good quantity
at the depth of a little over twenty
feet. Pumping tests showed that the
water in the small hole would sup
ply continued pumping at the rate of
six gallons per minute. From this

larger volume holding capacity would
supply all the water needed. A test
made of the water showed that it

May Increase
U. S. Army by
50,000 Men
Darn Thinks That Nation's Forces
Are "Below the Danger lane
Cost Is 35 Millions.
Washington, Aug. 6. A campaign
to increase the size of the regular
armv to 165 thousand men and 14
thousand officers will be instituted
bv the war department immediately
after the return to Washington of
Secretary Dern.
Bern's inspection of Panama canal
defense and army posts throughout
the west is said at the department
to have confirmed the general star's
niort irm thaf the armv is "below
the danger line."
The war department consequently
has prepared concrete plans to in
crease the present active force 118
thousand men and 12 thousand offi
cers by approximately 50 thousand at
an annually increased expenditure
of 35 million dollars.
Claim Relief Aid.
Dern, the general staff, and Gen
prnl TVmrlns MncArthur. chief Of
stan', have united in support of the
bill introduced at the last congress
by Representative Thompson (dern..
Tex.) to accomplish the necessary
increase.
Thompson plans for the enlarged
army to Become a semi-renei meas
ure. An increase of the army by 50
thousand now will, he argues, take
that many young men off relief rolls
and aid in eliminating surplus labor.
To accomplish a saving in appro
priations despite the additional 35
million dollars required Thompson
proosed that the army absorb some
of the men now enrolled in CCC
cams.
Needed for Defense.
The war department's position,
however, is that completely aside
from any relief or economy objec
tives, the army needs to be increas
ed for reasons of national defense.
The army is organized, according
to General MacArthur, to protect
outlying possessions, train civilian
components in time of emergency,
and form a permanent force to repel
any invaders. At the present time,
according to MacArthur, the army's
strength is not sufficient to earrj
out those three tasks simultaneously.

Paris. France denied Japan her

Although French officials indicated
that France will seek to improve her
position with safeguards of her naval
superiority over Germany at the
1935 conference in London, a spokes
man declared: "There is no ques
