' Mrs. S. P. Latta who has been sick
for so long is reported as being some
better at this time and which is
pleasant news for her many friends.
Harry Albin and wife were over
to Omaha last Saturday where they
were looking after some business
matters and as well was visiting with
friends.
Tom Nelson was a visitor in Omaha
on last Sunday where he wa.s guest
at the home of his son, Lawrence Nel
son and family and 'where all enjoyed
a good time.
C. V. Harrows, who has been work
ing rather hard and steady was not
feeling the very best and was com
pelled to refrain from his work on
Monday of this week.
The Murray transfer company
was unloading two cars of cottonseed
meal for Messrs. W. J. Philpot and
Harvey Raspe which they are using
for the feeding of their stock.
The Murray lumber yard has been
unloading a car cf lumber, one of
sand and another one of plaster which
speaks up and says times are getting
better, a fact all are pleased with.
George Bcrgcr painted the Wood
man hall on last Thursday and Sat
urday, making it white, which makes
a very pleasing looking building. Cot
ter take a peep at the structure after
its completion.
Omar Schlichtemeier and wife and
also Mrs. Tillie Johnson, mother of
Mrs. Schliclemeier were visiting
from their home near Nehawka. at
Murray last Saturday ami as wen
were looking after some business.
Mrs. M. G. Churchill who has been
po seriously ill for some time past
and has been kept to her bed, is re
ported as being seme improved at
this time. Her many friends are hop
ing that her improvement will con
tinue. Miss Neva Lancaster who has been
in charge of the store was not feel
ing the very best and was compelled
to remain at home and so the store
had to be looked after by Mrs. R. A.
Noell, during the time of her sister's
illness.
Mrs. Edith King of California and
where she has resided for a numbei
of years arrived in Murray and vi
cinity and has been visiting with her
many friends and relatives. Mrs.
King was accompanied by her
daughter.
Mr. and Mrs. Albert Young were
visiting with friends and as well were
locking after some business matters
in Nebraska City on last Saturday
where they were visiting with
friends.
Lon Crosser was called to Omaha
on Monday of this week where he
went for a tank of gasoline and for
which he is finding a good demand,
lie also has disposed cf two new
Pontiacs to Omaha rarties at the gar
age the past week.
Mr. and Mrs. Karl Lancaster enter
tained at their home on last Sunday
and had as their guests for the occa
sion, Paul Stilleinger and w ife, Pill J
Kennedy and wife, Dan Horchar and
family and John Eppings and wife,
the latter of Murdock.
Cameron Cathey, formerly of this
vicinity but for the past few years
a resident of "Waterloo, Iowa, where
he has been in the drive-it-yourself
business with the family arrived and
has been visiting with relatives and
friends for the p;;st week. 1
Deputy State Sheriff Jarvis E. Lan
caster was a visitor in Murray last
Monday morning- meeting with his
many friends here r.nd by the way
was also looking after his political
fences as he is candidate for the nom
ination for the office of county sher
iff, subject to the voters of the dem
ocratic party at the primary election
August 11th. Jarvis bus many
friend;! in and about Murray where
lie resided for many years.
Ray Frederick Jluch Eetter.
While one knee which was more
severely injured and which remains
in a very painful condition, Ray
Frederick is getting along very nice
ly at this time considering the se-
versity of the injuries which he re
ceived when his truck was hurled in
to the ditch. Mr. Frederick is so
that he is able to get about in his
car. Many of his friends over the
county, and he has many of them,
Jiave called on him. Among them
are Rex Peters, Henry Wilkins, M.
G. Failing, Wm. Tailing. Robert
Palmquist and George Rouse of
Greenwood.

Mr. and Mrs. Fred L. I Hid who
were spending some two weeks in the
west and during the time were guests
v.t the home of Mr. and Mrs. Louis
II. Puis where they enjoyed a very
pleasant visit and saw some very
nice country, being at Parish, Wyo.,
Mrs. Puis home returned here last
Saturday and while they wer well
pleased with the trip they were also
glad to get back to good old Cas
county and the friends at Murray.
Sperdinft Week in West.
Mr. and Mrs. George E. Nickles
and Mrs. Henry C. Long departed on
Tuesday for the western portion of
the state where they will spend the
remainder of the week. Mrs. Long
owns a farm there and they will visit
it as well as looking after some busi
ness matters for a few days.
Wheat Very Fair.
The threshing returns from the
vicinity of Murray has shown a very
pleasant returns as shown by the
threshings which have been com
pleted. Some of the results are as
follows: Martin Sporer 32 bushels
an acre. Ike Todd. 32. Glen Todd, 30.
John Hobscheidt 20. One of the fields
f f O. A. Davis was not quite so high.
IvTany Trains Carry Cattle.
The Missouri Pacific has been do
ing a very thriving business of late
in the transferring of cattle from the
arid north to the plains of Texas
where the moisture has been abund
ant, and where they will be taken
care cf. The government has charge
of the transferring.
Business Changes Hands.

In business in Murray for a number
of years lias two good offers for em
ployment at a good figure and so
last Saturday disposed of his garage
interests in Murray to Ilollis Akins,
v, ho has taken the institution over

luie. Mr. Dakke was moving on last
Mcnday the tools and stock, getting
ready to enter upon his new position.
llezU With Painful Accident.
7 7: Wm. Sporer who has been
in her bed for some weeks, was able
to be cut lasit Sunday and was taken
to the home of her sister. Mrs. A. G. !
Long where a dinner was given in
honor of Mrs. Homer Miller and bus
hand, as they are to return to their
'lome r.t Plainview soon. In seme way
Mrs. Sporer slipped and in falling,
one fo her feet and legs were very
badly injured. She has been com
pelled to return to her bed and it is
feared it will be some time before the
injured limb is so thr.t she can again
got about on it. However her many
friends are all hoping it will not be
long before she shall again be able
to be around.
Injures Ankle at Play.
Ethan Allen and a number of his
fellows while engaged in a water
fight at the upper garage, had the
misfortune to slip and in some way
sprained one of his ankles very bad
ly. Ho lias been somewhat lame for
a few days, but is some better at
this time.

of Summerfiold, Kansas, spent the
day with them, taking well filled bas
kets of lunch to add to the cafeteria
dinner which was served at the noon
hour and which included fried chick
en and ::11 the trimmings. And all
sure enjoyed it after their long drive.

home. It is needless to say all en
joyed the day and hope to have an
other chance to vh'it at this Kansas
home.

Two weeks ago this same crowd
r.iet at the Albert Murray home at
Cedar Creek to spend the day visiting
with Mrs. Emma Murray and daugh
ter, Mary of Alva. Okla., and it. was
then the trip to Summerfield was
planned.
Uccting Aid Society.
The Aid Society will meet at the
Christian church Wednesday after
noon, July 11th. Hostesses, Mrs. Fred
HiJd, Mrs. Margaret Erendell, Mrs.
Will Seybolt.
BUSINESS HOUSES CLOSING
In cruer that the owners and clerks
of the various business houses of the
city might more thoroughly enjoy
the day of independence, the business
houses of the city were closed at
noon. Owing to the fact that there
was no formal celebration staged here
a large part of the vacationers mo
tored to the nearby bathing benches
or cities where formal celebrations
were staged. A number from here
motored to Red Oak, Iowa, where
they spent the day in the enjoyment
of the celebration.
CONTINUES QUITE POORLY
Mrs. Leo Bintner, residing south
cast of Murray, who has been at a
hospital at Omaha for the past sev
eral weeks continues quite poorly
and her case has caused a great deal
of worry to the members of the fam
ily. Mrs. Rintner lias been poorly for
rome months and it was hoped that
she might respond more rapidly to
the treatment at the hospital. It
is hoped, however, that the next few
days may show a much better im
provement in her general condition.
STILL QUITE POOPtLY
Mrs. W. T. Scotten, who has been
very critically ill lor several weeks
is still quite poorly end ha:s failed
to show the improvement which has
been hoped for and has gradually
grown a great deal weaker. The
members of the family have all been
here in the last two wecqs to be with
the mother in her illnes.

AVOCA NEWS
Timer Hennings and the family
were spending the Fourth of July
at the home cf their folks at Louis
ville. Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Ilollenberger
were over to Omaha on last Tuesday
where they were looking after some
business for the day.
In a game of baseball which was
played at Nehawka between the Ne
hawka and Avoca teams, the Avoca
team won by a score of 13 to 9.
Earl Freeman and family were
spending Sunday at the home of his
rarents. Edward Freeman and fam
ily northeast of Weeping Water.
Elmer J. Hallstrom was called to
Lincoln on Tuesday of last week
where he had some business matters
to look after for the Farmers Bank
of Avoca.
Fred Marquardt and wife were
visiting in Louisville last Sunday and
where they also attended a picnic at
the lakes along the Platte in the
evening.
John Everett and family were en-'
joying a visit at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. George L. Rrinton at Elmwood
on last Sunday where all enjoyed
the visit very much.
The clever and genial agent for
the Missouri Pacific, Mr. A. W. Carr
who has served the public at the
station was transferred to the third
trick job at Union last Tuesday and
a Mr. Roghlemein was sent here in
his place.
R. L. Propst, father of Mrs. Elmer
Hallstrom. is visiting at the Hall-'
strom home in Avoca from his home
at Lake Worth, Florida, and is ac
companied by a Cuban maid who as
sists him in getting about as hisi
eyes are very poor.
Wm. Sporer who had not been in
Avoca since the time the railroad was
built until the present, was visiting
with friends here on last Tuesday.
Mr. Sporer who resided northeast of
Weeping Water years ago makes his
home at Murray at this time.
Simon Rehmeier and the family of
AIvo were visiting at Avoca on last
Monday evening, and sure they do
not forget when the celebration is
had here for it affords them an op
portunity to visit with their many
friends. They were accompanied by
Professor Leo Hauptnian and family
who are residents of AIvo, as Profes
sor Hauptnian has been elected to
be superintendent cf the AIvo schools.
They also visited Lis parents. Mr.
and Mrs. Lee Ilauptman.
Celebration a Success.
The P'ourth of July celebration
which the people of Avoca put on
every year on July 2nd in the even
ing was duly held on last Monday
evening and a large and well pleased
crowd was present and enjoyed the
program, and as well were thrilled
by the potentious clouds which
threatened rain but did not deliver
the goods. Some were frightened
away on account of the threatening
weather but most stayed the evening
out. There was music by the juven
ile band and Hal Garnet and family
of Plattsmouth were here and sang
which was enjoyed.
The two daughters of Herman
Wagner also gave a musical num
ber. Ernest Gollmer, Oscar Zimmer
and Verne Rawalt were heard in a
saxophone trio which was very pleas
ing to all. One of the pleasing fea
tures of the evening was the Chiek
enhouse Orchestra which was com
posed of Lloyd Behrns, Vern Rawalt,
Ernest Gollner and Emory Vails.
They sure did bring the applause
from the happy crowd. Mrs. J. J. Cul
len and P. Straub gave a very pleas
ing duet. The Friendly Farm Girls,
and you could see friendship in their
happy smiles, was the next number
and was rendered by a chorus of So
phia Stubendick, Opal RufTner, Ir.es
O. Ohlersherg, Edna Mohr, Alma
Hillman and Lorinc Wahlers. A
whistling solo was given by W. II.
Sims of Lincoln.
A very fine time was had notwith
standing the fear and hope as to that
of rain.
Candidates Were Here.
Among the merry crowd visiting
the happy throng were a number of
candidates, they being W. G. Kieck
who is county attorney and wishes
to succeed himself, John E. Turner,
county treasurer who is seeking re
election and our own Shorty Homer
Sylvester who desires to be sheriff
for another four years and was ac
companied by his amiable deputy.
Thomas Walling, all adding to the
Interest and color of the celebration.
Mrs. Steinhcff Passes.
Mrs. Win. Steinhoff, formerly Miss
Lena Buckman, aged 54 years, pass
ed away at their home in the coun
try several miles southwest of Avoca
last Thursday evening after a short
illness. Mrs. Steinhcff was the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred D.
Buckman cf Avoca. She leaves the
husband, two children and her par
ents to mourn her departure. The
funeral was held from the North
Eranch church and attended by a
host of friends, so many that the
church building could not hold them.
If we had taken our boom time
