social event on Tuesday afternoon,
the occasion beingr the meeting of
the W. R. C. Mrs. George L. Farley

as a fine program given by a number
of the talented local people.
The Drosrram comnrised a vocal
number by Mrs. Gilbert Hirz, a piano
solo by Francis Stoll. readings by
Mrs. Hazel Jameson and Mrs. W. J.
H. Petter, as well as a piano number
by Miss Edna May Petersen and a
readine by Mrs. Lois Troop, all be
ing very artistically given.
At the close of the afternoon
dainty refreshments closed a most
enjoyable occasion.

Omaha. Preliminary hearing for
Harry Werner, owner of the Millard
hotel here, on charges of murder
thru arson and of burning Insured
property, began in police court here
Monday, and after a legnthy after
noon session, was continued until
Tuesday afternoon.
The charges are the outgrowth of
the fire that destroyed the hotel the
night of Feb. 8 and resulted in the
death of seven firemen, five of whom
were crushed to death when a wall
caved in.
The charges were filed after a
lengthy investigation by state off!
cial3. Deputy County Attorney Craw
ford asserted the state would show
that the fire was not started by de
fective wiring but by "something
that caused an immediate flame."
Robert Hutchens, night engineer
i at the hotel, was the first witness
called by the state.' He testified that
on the night of Feb. 7 he found

to a sprinkler valve. The other end
of the hose. Ilutchqns testified, hung
out of a window. Jlutchens testified
that Weiner told him "I am fixing
the sprinkler valve."
The engineer, who left town short
ly after the fire, at first refused to
answer questions about why ho left
but finally said "I got a letter so :
left town."
At this point, Deputy State Attor
ney General Ramsey, who was active
in the investigation that preceded the
filing of the charges, handed to de
fense attorneys a letter that lay on
the exhibit table. . The letter, ad
dressed to Hutchins. wa3 mail3d in
Omaha on March 17 and contained a
threat ordering him to "get out of
town or be put on the spot." It also
carried a warninc against "squeal
ing" and wa3 signed with the name
"Jammie."
Hutchens said that after leaving
here he had gone to Missouri visit
ing "first one place, then another."

Last Long Rest

munity Dies at Home Here Mon
day After Long Illness.
Monday cveninir at 7:40 at the
family home in this city occurred th?
death of William II. Venner, 88, one
of the last surviving veterans of the
civil war in this city.
Mr. Venner had been ill for the
past ceveral month3 and gradually
i
failing until death came last evening
to his relief. Mr. Venner was for
many years a resident or tne wynaru
community where he wa3 engaged in
farming, but in recent years has made
hi3 home in thi3 city, where with
Mrs. Venner. he spent the declining
years.
This SDlendid old eentleman was
one of the most genial of men per-
onallv and had a larpre circle of
i
friends in the city and surrounding
country, who will mis3 very much his
presence now that he has been called
away.
Mr. Venner is survived by the
widow, their daughter having pre-j
ceded the father in death a num
ber of years ago.
HEN MOTHERS KITTENS
One of the farmers residing near
this city has a bantam hen that can
qualify in the believe-it-or-not class.
This hen was in the setting mood
.when a litter of three kittens arrived
J at the farm and these were located
I near wnere the hen was setting, inc
small kittens, chilled, would crawl
up under the wing of the hen and
soon Mrs. Hen forsook the thoughts
cf setting and devoted herself to the
care of the kittens, following them
and attempting to get them to enjoy
her repasts of corn or wheat. The
hen finally wished to hover the kit
tens each night and made necessary ,
the locking up of the hen, who now
is back on the old Job of setting.

W. H. Venner, long time resident of
this community, who passed away
on Monday evening at tne family
home in this city. There was a large
number of the old friends in attend
ance at the services.

conducted the beautiful and comfort
ing Christian Science services, bring
ing the message of the glory of the
life to come and into which Mr. Ven
ner has gone to his just reward.
Prank A. Cloidt gave as a solo num
ber, "Abide With Me," while the Ma
sonic quartet composed of Frank A.
Cloidt, Raymond C. Cook, II. G. Mc-
Clusky and It. W. Knorr, gave two
of the hymns requested by the fam
ly. "Lead Kindly Light" and "In
Thee O Spirit True and Tender."
Obituary
Yfilliam II. Venner, the son of
John and Jane Venner, was born Oct,
4, 1844, near . Corydon, Harrison
county. Indiana. He wa3 ono of a
family of nine brothers and sisters,
of which but one brother, !.m,
near Hartsville, Ind., is living. Mr.
Venner attended college at Harts-
vill3 and spent several years during
his young manhood teaching school.
During the Civil war, he enlisted
with Co. E of the 134th Indiana vol
unteers, serving until the end of
the war. About 1S77 he came to
Nebraska where he engaged in farm
ing. With the exception of a few
years spent near Hay Springs, Xebr.,
he has resided in and near Platts
mouth since that time.
He was married to Alva R. Cole,
Jan. 8, 1885, and to this union one
child, De Ella May, was born, who
passed away seven years ago. He is
survived by his wife and the one
brother, also a number of nieces and
nephews.
Mr. Venner loved truth and good

these principles. He was always
friendly and Jovial and nothing made
him hanpier than to entertain his
friends in his home. Thus ends a
long and useful and happy life here.
