Dairy cows have carried thou
sands of Nebraska farmers through
the recent trying years of depressed
crop prices, Carl R. Gray, president
of the Union Pacific railroad, de
clared Thursday in his annual re
port at Lincoln to the Nebraska Dairy
Development assocition.
In the past year, Mr. Gray said,
Nebraska producers received $26,
000,000 for dairy products, equal to
onethird the value of all crops.
"Numerous farmers have ad
mitted to the society's represen
tatives," he said, "that their
weekly milk nad cream checks
have provided them with funds
for necessities not raised on the
land.
"The subnormal agricultural
conditions of 1932 have empha
sized the high economic value
of the state's dairy industry."
Normal consumption of dairy
products has been maintained;, be
.said, and th- year closed with dairy
ing in a favorable position. In 1932
dairying was the one industry which
produced no exportable surplus.
Bring 453 Sires.
President Gray reviewed activities
of the society since its organization
in 1924. He said much progress has
been made, due in large measure to
co-operation of the agricultural ex
tension service, several principal
breed associations and other agen
cies. Dairy herd improvement associa
tions and boys' and girls 'dairy calf
clubs have increased in membership
and the number of animals.
One of the society's principal ob
jects, said Mr. Gray, has been elim
ination of scrub bulls from dairy
herds and introduction of purebred
sires. The society has placed on Ne
braska farmers in the past nine years
(53 high grade dairy bulls. Aver
age production of the dams of these
animals is 550 pounds of butterfat
a year.
Of great importance to the state,
Mr. Gray declared, is. continued im
provement in production.
He said a large percentage of the
85,000.000 pounds of butter produced
n Nebraska last year scored. ,8S car
less, whereas butter scoring 92 is
worth 2 to 3 cents more per pouna.
Millions Lost.
This represents a loss of several
million dollars potential earnings.
Higher scoring butter can be pro
duced from cream handled more ex
pertly at the source.
In the nine years of the society's
existence, its experts have attenaea
2,831 meetinbs in 91 of the 93 coun
ties in the state. Attendance at these
meetings was 340,000.
Including the 453 purecred sires
th society had distributed 3,748
