Corn Outyields Kocgrh Dent. Two hundred tight farm demon strations well scattered over Nebras ka have proven that the smooth. dimple dented type of corn outyields rough dented corn an average of five bushels per acre. These tetts were run over a period of seven years by farmers co-operating with county agents. The jXebras-ka experiment station established the same facts in experimental work between 1&05 and 1909. In selecting seed corn in the field this fall it will pay to notice the sur roundings of the corn plant from which the seed ear is selected. The stalk should be well rooted, strong; and the ear should be growing on the stalk at about the desirable height. The shank should be strong but not oversize or tough, and the shucks should cover the tar but not be heavy. Generally speaking, the smooth, dimple dented corn is slen der, the kernels are of only medium depth and the ear is very firm and solid. warm, ation. clean. Blankets Ideal Winter Covering From a health standpoint blan kets are considered the best bed cov ering. They are light weight and insuring comrort anu reiax They are al&o easy to keep Lightness of weight is one of the first requisites. I5e sure that there is a good nap on both sides. It is the nap that gives the warmth, therefore the thicker the nap the warmer the blan ket. The nap provides air spaces which serve as insulation. The two in one process or double woven blan kets are made with full nap on each side and are better because they take full advantage of this principle. The warmth of a blanket does not depend as much on the kind of material as the amount of nap. Black Walnuts Should Be Planted Now. The big crop of black walnuts in eastern Nebraska and the popularity cf black walnuts should encourage the planting of nuts this fall. Large size nuts should be chosen and plant ed with the hulls on. n ordinary soil it is bett to plant the nuts two in a place and about four inches deep in cultivated or well spaded ground. If possible the nuts should be planted where the trees are to grow per manently and the planting should therefore be about 20 feet apart each way. Waste land, low land and roadsides may be planted to black walnuts and made to yield a profit able return in nuts and lumber in the future. While the nuts may not havo much market value, they are much sought after by many Nebraska people. Walnut logs often bring a high price. The trees will add to the value of the farm even though they are never cut for lumber. large Increase in 4-H Entries et Ak-Sar-Ben Nebraska 4-H club boys and girls will exhibit 630 head of livestock in the Ak-Sar-Ben live stock 6how Oct ober 29 to November 4, according to the entries. Forty-one counties will be represented from Nebraska, 21 from Iowa, three from Kansas and one from Missouri. Twenty-two steers are enter ed from Kansas, while Missouri has entered one in this class. Those in charge of the show are gratified at the 50 per cent increase over 1921 when 4S4 cattle, 141 swine and 23 sheep were shown in the 4-H club class. Many additional counties are showing at the Ak-Sar-Ben that did not how at the state lair. Nebraska Tax Primer Eeir.g Printed. Farmers, teachers, newspapers and business men are already writing to the agricultural college for copies of the Nebraska Tax Primer. The Primer is made up of twelve chap ters, each printed as a separate pahmplet. Chapters one and two are printed at the present time, and chap aers three and four are practically ready to be printed. The Primer includes lessons about public expenditures, public revenues, federal and state revenue systems, in tangible property tax, exemptions, general property tax, 6alcs tax. In come tax. taxations of corporations, the franchise tax and tax administra tion and the illative burden of taxes. THE LIGHT SHIP It was on the ocean's water blue I saw the waves rush to land. The Eound of the fog horn went straight through. Angry waves and heaps of sand. The Mariner lost his onward course And sounding he did take, As the fog horn screached it self hoarse. And the sounding-line did the bottom rake. The Light-Ship was the Ma riner's goal. For hours he stood on deck, And threw out his line for a rift or shoal That might by chance cause a wreck. The storm with, its fury lashes The boat, like a toy on the wave. Then the Light-Ship suddenly flashes Its bea?on. as a beam from an unknown grave. The Mariner rolled up his sounding line And in the cabin he went. And posted a bulletin which read in fine. You may rest safely now. For none of the bottom was sent. We are in the trough, of a very rough sea. The waves are rolling high. There is a guiding Mariner to whom we can flee. That pilots us serenely by. The rocks and hoals that eeem to hide. The Light-Ship that nestles near our side.
