Before a cheering farm bolt audience. President Hoover Tuesday r.iglit claimed a great na tional victory has been achieved against depressive economic forces and enunciated a series of twelve rt publican "policies" in aid of agri culture. Interrupted often by shouts and applause, the thief executive as serted directly that If the program as sponsored by members of the dem ocratic party during the last session of congress had been enacted "it vould have been the end of recov ers." As items in his series of "poli cies the president proposed among other things, higher farm tariffs where necessary to protect agricul ture, revision of the agricultural marketing act and repeal of the stab ilization clause and the use of annual payment of the foreign debt and ex pand agricultural markets abroad. At the D3s Moines coliseum, where he delivered his address to a standing room crowd, there were about 10,000 persons, with overflow crowds outside. At the Shrine tem ple, where he said his receptions had convinced him that Iowans were "loyal, hard working republicans," a voice from the audience called out: "And democrats, too." "They, too, are welcome In our fold." the president replied. Accounting his stewardship, the president asserted near the outset of his speech that thru this struggle against depression "a great national victory has been achieved." Applause came as the president, tel.'ing what he called the adminis tration's "war" on the economic dif ficulties, said: "And above all we have fought to preserve the safety, the principles and ideals of Ameri can life." Eattle on Thousand Fronts. Applause came from the crowd again and again, sometimes mixed with cheers, as the president con tinued the story of what he called "the battle on a thousand fronts." Mr. Hoover Faid he now could speak of some of the forces which at one time caused the secretary of the treasury to inform him that the nation could remain on the geTJ standard "but two weeks longer" un less a remedy was found. "Happily, we have won this bat tle," he raid. "There is no longer any danger in disclosure." The thief executive was cheered for .more than three minutes as he entered the coliseum and began his address. The crov.'d cheered and yell ed when tbo president described what lie called the "war" on the economic difficulties. Yells of "no" and "never" filled the hall when he ashed if the American people pro posed to place the responsibility of government in the hands of the democratic party. The president stopped his delivery and smiled half a minute at a sally from a number of his audience dur ing applause of a statement that if the measures advanced by house dem ocrats were passed they would "end hope of recovery." While quoting a statement by his democratic opponent, that the "Haw-ley-Smoot tariff was the highest tar iff in the history of the world," the presideut departed from his prepared address to interpolate: "Which in cidentally isn't true." This drew laughter and more applause from the audience. Later the president said all tariff bills, including the last, "contain in justices and inequalities." Tariff Eill Not Perfect. Interpolating again he added: "I have never said that bill (the Haw-ley-Smoot act was perfect by a long ways." He pointed to the flexible tariff as a means of correcting in equalities. It took the president an hour and a half to deliver his coliseum ad dress. At its conclusion he was cheer ed and applauded for about a min ut. Republican, leaders of Iowa and nearby states were applauded as they took their scats on the plat form in front. Henry Field, repub lican candidate for senator, and Mrs. Field were applauded when they walked onto the platform. Stata Journal. L 0 C A Lfl E IV S From Monday's Ially Attorney Carl I).
