BAGS SIX FLATTSMOUTH SEMI - WEEKLY JOTJKNAL t Cass County Farm Bureau Notes Copy furnished from Office of County Agent Wainscott ,v..;.;.'.,W4aVuVu'..v..;. Reorganize D. T. I. A. O. H. Liebera, manager of the Ne braska Dairy Development society and E. C. Scheidenholm, dairy spec ialist fro mthe College of Agricul ture, attended the meeting held on Thursday at the Farm Bureau office. Fourteen dairymen heard Mr. Lieb ers discuss pedigrees. "The bunk on pedigrees can readily be seen if you look for it," Mr. Liebers says. All the writing that says a certain ani may traces to another animal through a brother or grand-dam is "bunk."' that is so far way that it has noth ing to do with the animal in ques tion. The things you wan to know about a bull you might wish to buy are: Has he any daughters, and how much butterfat have they produced; if he is a young bull what his dam's record, not in butter but in butter fat, for a cow does give butter; what are his sisters record if they have any and so on back through the pedi gree. An example shown by Mr. Lieb ers was the pedigree of a bull pur chased for $160. After crossing out all the "bunk" there was not a sin gle record of production for three generations. Regardless of how good the records were generations back, the bull was only worth beef pdices. "You might jost as well have a scrub bull as 8 pedigreed one without a production tecord. Papers mean nothing.' says I-iebers. Mr. Scheideuhelm explained the butter sires contest that the differ ent Dniry Herd improvement Asso ciations throughout the state, are conducting. T'.. is c ntest is primarily a Study of the members own sires. Most every dairyman needs to know more about his own bull so the con test is organized to Rive this Study and the associations that do the greatest improving in their sires will be awarded prizes. There has been a demand from the county for a poultry course for wom men. a course thai begins at the be ginning of the poultry industry, the egg. A project has been planned which will deal with the simplest forms of poultry raising. From the old hen method to the most expensive incubator, from the small box house to the finest kind of brooder house. There will be six lessons and mem bers enrolling for the work will meet once a month at the regular training center in their part of the county. Any woman interested in this pro ject should get in touch with the Farm Bureau office right away. The first round of meetings will be held the latter part of February. Chick Math Mixture. With the present low prices of grains, poultry raisers should con sider seriously whether they can af ford to mix their own chick mash this year or buy it already mixed. Profits will be lean enough at the best and mixing your own feed may be another means of lessening costs considerably. The new recommended ration is: Yellow cornmeal 400 lbs. Shorts 200 lbs. Bran 100 lbs. Pulverized oat groats 100 lbs. Alfalfa leaf meal SO lbs. Meat and bone meal 75 lbs. Dried skim milk or dried buttermilk 50 lbs. Salt 10 lbs. i t f T T T t f T f 1015 lbs. 1. For early season use 1 good grade cod liver oil. Mix fresh every week. 2. Direct sunshine whenever it can be provided without chilling chicks. Cod liver oil is after all only a sub stitute. 3. Green feed (alfalfa, clover, lettuce, lawn clippings, etc.) cut in short lengths when available. 4. The ingredients for this ration can be purchased and the ration mixed for about SI. 60 per cwt. fig ured at the present market prices of each. Compare this with already mix ed rations before you buy. The same mix makes a splendid ra tion for the hens. D. D. Wainscott, f'ass Co. Extension Agent; Jessie H. Baldwin, Ass't Co. Extension Agent. CONTINUES TO IMPEOVE From Wednesdays Dally The many friends of the L. F. Terryberry family will be very much pleased to learn that Wallace, their young son, is now showing a very fine rate of improvement at the Meth odist hospital in Omaha, where he was operated on two weeks ago for the removal of a mastoid. The con dition of the young lad was very ser ious for a number of days and the improvement that has occurred in the last few days points to a speedy return home and being able to re sume his school activities.
