Much reading of modern books makes a man's mind full of mush. -io: If we "were a stenog's stomach we'd live in constant dread of her noon lunch. Women who do not even believe in cremation, love to rake each other over the coals. :o:- President Hoover has once more re minded Congress that it get some thing done before adjournment. They keep right on building new filling station for every motorist or a filling station for every bandit. :o: Adam took Eve because she was the best he could get hold of at the time. Many men marry for the same reason. -o:- Clnclnnati doesn't lead in popula tion, but certainly stands high in the number of cities within the metro politan area. ecu Dandelions being a component of a light wine, we wish the supreme court or somebody would confiscate those on our lawn. :o:- The trouble with the ordinary man Lb that when he gets into financial trouble he can nevr sell stock in himself or float bonds. -:.o: Just at a time when prize fighters are coming as large as mastodons, Jack Dempsey announces he will go to Africa to hunt big game. Just drop a yeast cake and a little sugar into a bottle of grape Juice and nature will show you how she violates the ISth amendment. Dr. Cherrlngton says lobbying for the common good is "proper." In that nense, then, one may consider anti-prohibition lobbying proper. - :o; i If you want to learn something about farm relief, get stuck in the mud near a farmer's home and call on him to bring on his 2-mule team. :o: If we could be shown any Admiral who wouldn't view with alarm any limitation, we'd take more seriously that naval testimony at Washington. :o; The only thing a woman consid ers more important than having her clothes, hat and hose match, is hav ing her husband's pocketbook match her taste. -:o:- We have a friend who reported that he had been so unsuccessful in driving the wolf from his doorstep that the animal now is practically housebroken. -:o: A southern business man asked one of his negro employes the other day if he had been enumerated. "No, sab." replied the darkey, "I ain't skeered of smallpox." :o: A new unit known as "hip slap pere," has been add to prohibition force in New York. There are a lot of folks who (will wish these minions of the law some glass-lacerated hands. :o; "Why is it that a red-headed wom an never marries a meek-minded man?" asks a contemporary. Well, in the first place, a red-headed girl is' fond of fighting. :o:- A magazine editor is authority for the statement that a great deal of poetry is written in insane hospitals, and some of Jt is much better than the outside ,product8. :o: Owner of ancient Scottish estate is going to sell the peak of famous Ben Lomond, but it was not thought that an American collector will bring it home with him. :o: According to the new book of rules, it seems that if a presidential nominee for the Supreme Court has ever expressed an opinion favoring or opposing anything that lets him out. :o: Surgeons found, upon examining a Chicago citizen who had been shot, that he had appendicitis, from which he would have died in four hours. Between one and the other and both, a natural death is becoming practi cally hopeless. An aristocratic name is a total loss unless it is backed with a go getter complex. :o: Why not name that new planet "Volstead?" It is alost as far away as prohibition enforcement. :o: "Fewer Farmers Leaving Farms," says a headline. Perhaps they can't raise money for moving expenses. -:o:- Prohibition celebrated the week following Mothers' Day by jailing a 72-year-old Illinois mother of eight for 30 days. :o: News from several states indicates that the chief purpose of a primary election is to reduce unemployment among grand jurors. :o: Dispatches state that Aimee Sem ple McPherson, preaching in Pales tine, has converted a Turk, must do some powerful preaching. :o: A small boy, visiting one of the movie shows for the first time, re marked: "Ge, the girls have got on stockings up to their necks!" :o: Prosperity is waltzing around the corner, says President Hoover. Hon estly, Herbert, it looks to us like slow jazz on a crowded floor. :o: Senator Heflin predicts "another Democratic Party," but the Repub licans feel that they can lick two of them even more easily than one. :o: Russia is to have a new alphabet, j From what we have seen of Russian words, the old one was all right ex cept for being a little overworked. :o: They used to say every family had one black sheep, but these days if it is a white sheep it is a pretty sure sign it's ugly or has minus dero in IT. :o: When baby has the hiccoughs, as any woman will tell you, give the youngster sugar. But when fathei has the hiccoughs well, anothei story. :o: Secretary Kyde says that the farm er suffers because Americans eat lesH than did their fathers. Well( their fathers could take an appetizer oc castionally. :o: THE WAR ENDS AGAIN A contingent of some 40,000 French troops has left Mayence and other German cities, where they have been stationed since 1918. It is now expected that the last French soldier will be taken from German soil by the end of June. Not only Germans but many other persons as well, will feel that the end of the Aillied oc cupation of the Rhine country is more nearly the real end of the war than any previous event that has been hailed as such. The war ended on November 11, 1918, with the signing of the Arm istice. It ended again when the Ver sailles Treaty was initialed. When the United States made its separate peace in 1922, the end had ccme again. The signature and ratification of the Locarno Pact in 1925 proviad still another end cf the war. Aid so on through the twelve years of restless peace that have followed the great conflict. There is, of course, no satisfactory way of deciding just when the strug gle really wa9 over the edge of hos tilities was the most immediately im portant of all these steps toward peace. But all of the slow and halt ing agreements to end conflict and set up the machinery of a peaceful regime must figure in the real estab lishment of the peace. The war was many years brewing, although the actual outbreak occupied only a month. The peace will take as many years, if it is to be lasting, and will take a great deal of painstaking statesmanship. It remains to be seen whether the growth of alliances and causes of friction will prove as rapid as the building of European solidarity. Un less disarmament proceeds faster than competitive tariffs, arbitration faster than chauvinism, international cooperation faster than self ?sufficient nationalism, we will have no end of the world war, but instead a few fleeting years of armed peace between hostilities. A Georgia preacher delivered a bit ter sermon against liquor drinking in the town cemetery. No cause for complaint. By having a few extra graves dug he could tumble the vic tims in without ceremony. :o: The reason some men who get to Washington don't become great statesmen is because the bone that ought'a be in their backs is parked in the space where they ought'a have brains. -:o:- Georgia is promised a 112,000,000 tobacco crop this year, according to advice from Atlanta. No reason for anyone to get excited or enthusiastic when we contemplate the 20 per cent tobacco to become effective June 1st.
