Ias Vegas, Nev. Dec. 21. Shot
guns and frying pans were pressed
into service as noise makers here
today by a Joy mad populace that
turned out to celebrate the signing
of the Boulder dam bill by Presi
dent Coolidge.
Mayor Heese of this little railroad
city said that the signing of the
bill was a Christmas gift of millions,
and an increase in population of not
leBB than 10,000 persons during the
next three years. As materials for
the construction must pass thru Las
Vegas, business men believe that a
vast expansion may be expected. j
Every man, woman and child join
ed in a parade led by the mayor and
the municipal band, drowning out
the music with shouting and noise
from impromptu instruments.

friends we would have no joy in doing
business.

We would not have it otherwise.

Reports have reached Omaha of
an impending merger between the
Missouri Pacific and the Chicago
Great Western railroads, giving the
Missouri Pacific an entrance into
Minneapolis and Chicago.
" The reports are inspired by recent
heavy trading in Great Western
' stock, by the fact that the Missouri
Pacific recently surveyed the Great
Western's books and by an admis-
sion from a Missouri Pacific official
j that his road had been approached
( recently as a possible purchaser of
the Great Western, which has been
for sale for two years.
Stocks Rise Suddenly.
Whether the Ftock purchases were
by agents for the Missouri Pacific
i or by professional traders who guess
! ed there was a deal on, has not been
ascertained. The stock has been
stagnant for a long time, the com
Jmon being quoted at 13 to 15, and
f preferred, on which there have been
I no dividends since 1919, never go-
ing over 30. Wednesday common
j touched 22, and preferred, 48.
I The Great Western, known as the
! Maple Leaf route, has four terminals
for its 1,495 miles of track. These
are Omaha, Minneapolis, Chicago and
Kansas City, which enters from Leav
enworth over Missouri Pacific rails.
Lines extend from each terminal
to northern Iowa and southern Min
nesota. Meeting in January.
Thus trains from Chicago run on
the same line to Oelwein. Ia., wheth-
i er their destination be Minneapolis.
Omaha or Kansas City, and trains
from Omaha run to Clarion, la., go
ing either to Minneapolis or Chicago.
The Kansas City-Oelwein line, which
goes through Des Moines, could take
Missouri Pacific traffic either to
Minneapolis or Chicago. !
The Chicago Great Western's an
nual meetinjr will be held next month
i in New York. The deal may be dis
closed at that time.
Missouri Pacific lines now extend
from Omaha on the north, St. Louis
on the east, and Pueblo on the west,
criss-crossing most of the territory
from these cities to the Gulf or Mex
ico from New Orleans to Mexico.
Smithsonian
Instfrition Has
a Busy Year
Nearly 1,000,000 Specimens Con
tributed for Study From
All Over World
Washington Nearly 1,000.000
specimens were contributed during
the last fiscal year to the natural
science collections administered by
the Smithsonian Instiution for study
and diffusion of knowledge con
cerning them.
At the annual meeting of the
board of regents, Charles G. Abbot,
secretary, reported that there had
come from Alaska, the Dominican
Republic, the American southwest
and elsewhere objects made by pre
historic man; from the Philippines
the C. F. Baker collection of East
Indian insects, one of the finest in
existence; from Honduras, Formosa
and Sumatra have come plant speci
mens; from Siam and China valu
able natural history collections;
from Mexico and elsewhere, rare and
important minerals.
What visitors to the capital see
in the National Museum where the
collections are housed is but a frac
tion of the Smithsonian's wealth.
Dr. Abbot points out. "The study
collections include millions of speci
mens never put on exhibition but
which provide the basic materials
for studying the fauna, flora, geo
logy, paleontalalgy and ethnology of
this country and other areas of the
earth.
During the year the Smithsonian
and its branches sent out 30 expedi
tions relating to the natural history
sciences, working in fields as far
apart as Alaska, Mexico. South
America, South Africa. China and
the East Indies. Special attention
was paid to the West Indian archi
pelago. Expeditions were largely
financed by friends of the Smith
sonian. The mass of data on solar radia
tion is growing, andw in time may
make it possible to forecast weather
for long periods ahead, it is hoped.
President Colidge was among the
87 donors who presented 138 speci
mens to the National Zoological
Park during the year. The outstand
ing gift of the year to the National
Gallery of Art was the Thomas Morn
painting of the Grand Canyon of the
Yellowstone, presented by George
Dupont Pratt, Dr. Abbot reports.

HELLO THERE, SANTA GLAUS!
This echo continues to be heard, for Santa was
indeed in Plattsmouth again this year to greet
his little friends and see if they have been good
during the past year, so that he will know
whether they are deserving of the presents
they have asked for.
We are always happy during this part of the
year, for it seems our opportunity of serving
the people, young and old, is ever at its best.
Year by year passes, yet we always have the
same good friends, with those others who
have been added during the passing of the
days. We thank our many friends for their
business, and wish for them the happiest of
all Christmas.
