When Rudolph Valentino died, his
two former wives and the woman who
said she was engaged to be married to
him, and the man who had been his
personal manager, vied with each
other in vulgarity of display and of
public eenduct. The manager con
ducted iho lying-in-state and the
funeral itself as if he was intent on
giving the most startling theatrical
performance he could devise. With
the grossest of bad taste, he acted as
amajordomo and stage-manager com
bined, and prolonged he scenes in
New York until the police were driv
en to take a hand and until the press
and the public itself, were disguestcd
with the managers' showmanship. .
Each cf the women seemed determ
ined to gain for herself every flash
and every word of publicity that she
could squeeze out of the dead man's
conspicuous position as a motion pic
ture actor and out of her association
with hir.i. One wife said that Valen
tino on his death bed had vowed he
had loved her and only her, while the
woman who said she was engaged to
him although Valentino had never
admitted it, certainly so far as the
public knew sobbed and fainted all
over the place and held herself before
the public on every possible occasion.
And the funeral itself was attended
by one wife and the relf-styled fian
cee, while another wife was coarse
enough to send what she dared call
"a personal representative" to be
present at the ceremony.
Now comes one of the wives to tell
the world that she is receiving, thru
some medium, astral messages from
Valentino who has seen and talked
to Caruso and others. She even says
she is going to write a book on the
subject of her communications with
the dead man. And she is at pains to
say that in his astral sphere Val
entino has net talked to her of the
cidevant financee, but only "of sig
nificant things and those subjects that
mean somthing."
This fiancee, being questioned cr
voluntarily testifying, for the first
time, appearing to advantage in con
nection with Valintino since his
death, says that the former wife's
drol about astral love messages is
"shocking, profane, and commercial."
Let it be hoped that this state
ment, which covers it all, will be
the last from any woman who has
sought, is seeking, or may seek, to
capitalize her association with Ru
dolph Valentino.- ..
