IDLENESS AS A GOAL
A Chicago dispatch quotes Bishop
E. H. Hughes of the Methodist Epis
copal church, when speaking on the
subject of "work," as saying that
"the heresy that life began in a toil
less Eden and that its goal is an idle
heaven has no religion or Biblical
warrant."
Certainly the idea of "an idle
heaven has no basis in reason or
common sense. The tired and worn-
out man may find grateful the sound
of the passage, "they shall rest from
their labors," but a little reflection
will convince hinj that nothing could
be more intolerable, more acutely
miserable, than sitting with folded
hands to all eternity. Life that is
life involves both activity of inter
est and actual employment of some
sort. 0
To "rest" from the "labors" of the
spirit the anxieties, fears, alarms,
and devastating battles with temp
tation cannot involve a cessation
of either intellectual interest or ac
tive employment, for such cessation
for more than brief periods would
virtually make of man a lifeless
automaton. The universal ideal of
heaven is an ideal of final peace and
happiness, but there can be no peace
or happiness in a sluggish idleness
that neither exercises the faculties
nor performs any service to others.
Though notnew, the view of Bishop
Hughes is logical and convincing.

HABIT OF SERENITY
' People who have poise command
our admiration. Better than that,
they command our affection.
Some men and women we know
rare souls never "blow up." The
east wall may fall right in but they
sit unperturbed. They proceed to do
the next thing and do it in the best
way they know how. We wonder at
their constant serenity.
The answer is habit.
If you are accustomed to lose your
patience over every trifiling irrita
tion, to "go off half-cocked" when
ever you are annoyed, to rave when
the telephone service is bad or the
stenographer misspells your words,
you are forming the habit of irrit
ability. When life's blows come, they will
shatter you. You have not formed
the habit of serenity. You have no
resources, nothing to fall back on.
If, on the other hand, you control
your temper on small occasions, you
resist the desire to rave, you hold
yourself in check in face of the day'6
petty irritations, you are forming the
habit of self-control.
Habit is your greatest aide or your
greatest curse in life. It can be ni3de
to serve you. Make habit serve you
If you have formed the habit of
serenity by constantly making a de
finite effort to restrain yourself when
you are annoyed by the countless ir
ritations of the day, you will find
that when the heavy blows fall, the
habit of serenity will take care of
you automatically.

never do blow up. And people will
be amazed at your poise, and wonder
what the secret of it is. The secret
is habit.
There is a great deal to command
the stoic philosophy of the old Ro
mans. Told that his son had died.
the stoic replied:
"I didn't expect him to live al
ways.
By careful living from day to day
we can prepare oursoives to witn-
stand all the shocks of life.
Serenity is a habit, and there is in
it one of the deepest satisfactions in
life.

OUR MURDER RECORD
Chicago had 170 murders in the
first 151 days of this year. That is
unusual; but not so unusual as a
fourth of that number would be in
any equal population in the coun
tries from which Chicago's inhabi
tants came.
Compare the number of our Amer
ican murderers with the record 01
England or of the immigrant na
tionalities with the records of the
countries from which they came, and
you will find that the same numbers
of the same sorts of people commit
ted many more murders in America
than in Europe.
Some of the reasons are doubtless
obvious, and explain if they do not
excuse a part of the difference.
But, even with this allowance, the
situation is a challenge to our law,
government and institutions to vin
dicate themselves.
