Our mission was to visit an inmate, whom we knew in Illnois nearly fifty years ago. We only learned of her a few weeks ago, and her daughter, Geraldine, is with her, looking after her wants. Mrs. Rosa (her name now' has been an in valid for year, and cannot walk a step and keeps to her bed only when taken out in her wheel chair. Our visit was one of pleasure, and our conversation consisted mcstly in re ferring to old times in the old Illi nois town in which neither one of us has visited for many years. She is being well taken care of and her sur roundings are pleasant. We cannot see how they could be otherwise with the fine conditions that exist in and around the home. While there, our old friend, Mr. Walton, accompanied us over the various departments and "everything" as the saying goes, "as neat as a pin," and the inmates who are not satisfied with his or her sur roundings are evidently hard to plw.se. These condition are due to Mr. William Evers. superintendent. who deserves great credit for the manner in which the home is con ducted, and we are willing to bet that there is not an institution of this character in -Nebraska more syste matically conducted. :o: OUT OF THE RUT Liquor lifts civilized man out of the rut, says Lord Dawson of Fenn, distinguished physician to the King of England. His idea is that in our age of specialization, with high pres sure industry making us cram twelve hours into six, the mind of man at the end of the day i3 running in a single groove or rut. "Alcohol in moderation gets that man out of the track. It livens his mental touch," says Lord Dawson. Yes. and after lifting him out of the rut, it pushes him back deeper than lie was before. Alcoholic ftim ulation has its equivalent reaction to as far below par or normal as the drink raises the drinker above par. The truth is learned in the cold grey dawn of the morning after.
