Dangers have been in frequent ambush along our path, hut we have uncover ed and vanquished them all. Passion has swept some of our communities, but only to give us a new demonstra tion that the great body of our people are stable, patri otic and law-abiding. No political party can long pur sue advantage at the ex pense of public honor or by rude and Indecent methods, without protest and fatal disaffection of its own body. The peaceful agencies of commerce are more fully revealing the necessary un ity of all our communities, and the increasing inter course of our people is pro moting mutual respect. We shall find unalloyed pleas ure in the revelation which our next census will make of the swift development of the great resources of some of the states. Each state will bring its generous contribu tion to the great aggregate of the nation's increase. And when the harvest from the fields, the cattle from the hills and the ores from the earth shall have been weigh ed, counted and valued, we will turn from them, all to crown with the highest hon or the state that has most promoted education, virtue, justice and patriotism among its people. Benjamin Harrison. 4 4 The farmers watch the strike news anxiously, but we suppose another item they'd like to read in their i neighborhood would be "No Game today rain." -:o: Praying for rain, preaching the gospel of repentence and shouting "amen" as the preacher scores a point in a 6ermon or prayer seem to be three things that have gone out of fashion' in American churches. A noble redman? life long republican? dyed-in-the-wool democrat? rabid socialist? :o: THE FOURTH ESTATE A A A A A A A A A A The newspaper business seems to be entering a new period. There is a kind of public interest in the tech nique of news gathering, editing and publishing that is different. Perhaps it is one more indication of the prog ress of democracy through the an cient hierarchies or feudal grada tions. Once upon a time the doings of kings and princes were not to be questioned by the common herd. Too much wasn't allowed to get about as to the plans or methods. Then there was a good deal of mys tery down through the ages attach ed to the religious function. When you had to scare people Into being good by prophesying eclipses or dropping a bunch of burning leaves into a natural gas well, it didn't do to have too many people inquire in to processes. Nowadays, thanks to the vigilance and efficiency of the press, quite as much as to the growth, of the demo cratic idea, everybody knows all about what King George has for lunch, and everything every relig ious organization does gets publish ed somewhere or other, and every American knows ho wevery govern ment ought tobe run, even if it isn't, and every college student knows what every one of the faculty is paid. Curiously, the last stronghold of mystery was the newspaper. Per haps because everybody in newspa pers was so busy getting in and get ting out the facts and stories about everybody else and everybody else's business, and took for granted the facts and poetry of his own, the pub lic never heard much about newspa pers from the inside. Reporters were often regarded as disagreeable or ter rifying persons, which could make or destroy a business or reputation with a whiff of words. And so it goes. de NOTICE OF REFEREE'S SALE bidder for cash the following scribed real estate, to-wit: The south half of the south east quarter of Section number ed thirty-two, (32) in Township ten, (10) North. la Range thirteen (13) east of the 6th P.'
