BATES, Publisher SUBSCRIPTION PRICE $2.00 The auto has done lots for people and done a lot of people. :o: Health hint: In dropping remarks, be careful where they hit. . :o: Restaurants are selling corn-on- the-cob and string-on-the-bean. :o: Money talks, but it doesn't hesi tate long enough to say much. -:o: Likewise, there are just as poor fish In the sea as ever got married. :o: Our merchants have been quite busy disposing of bargains this week. :o: A dollar will go farther than two years, but it is harder to get one started. :o: The man who takes himself seri ously has to do It because nobody else will. to: Ever notice it? When a man owes everything to his wife he seldom pays the bill. :o: Talk about love at first sight, some of them must fall In love without looking at all. :o: It is a whole lot better to see the boys and girls raising calves and pigs than Cain. :o: Even the children know when dad dy Is concocting a romance to get himself out of trouble. :o: This is the time of year when you can get chiggers simply by brushing up against a fence post. to: A man may have a hunch. But the man who is certain well, life must be a simple thing to him. o:o Art Mullen should be placed in a position where he can do the most good. For instance, chairman of the executive committee. :o: The modern motor car trader has lots more work than the old fash ioned horse, trader, because he has so many more parts to lie about. :o: This expected earthquake that is booked to swallow up part of Eu rope sounds like another alibi from countries that can't pay their debts. : o- It is easy to understand why the people in Nebraska are sick and tired of the kind of government we are getting, but we should not allow it. :o: Now that Uncle Sam is in the bus iness of delivering coal, just which of his departments should we ad dress on the subject of the slag in our bin? " :o: Henry Ford is rapidly getting the reputation of wanting to buy every thing he sees. Perhaps now would be a good time to show him the Brooklyn bridge. -:o:- The movie critics are so inconsis tent. One moment they insist that the movies be made life-like, and the next day they want to abolish the ten-foot kiss. :o: A distinguished Briton was sur prised to hear from Ambasador Ged des that Boston is not the capital of the United State's". Boston will be sur prised to hear it, too. :o: Of course you meet four or five times a day the liar who says, "I don't care how hot It get3 in the daytime, just so it cools off enough so I can sleep at night." :o: There will probably be no change in the state chairmanship of the democratic committee. Ex-Governor Neville is all right, but maybe he does not want to serve longer. :o: Greece now says it wanted to take Constantinople merely in the inter est of peace, but of course when it turned out that It would have to fight to make it the interest of peace it didn't seem so. :o: What i3 the use of nominating candidates for office in the primary when it is permissible for those dis satisfied with the result to put op posing candidates on the general election by petition? :o: Perhaps the courts have done well for the present in refusing to place too much reliance upon the new fangled lie detectors. It may be that lie detectors don't lie, but liars can use the lie detectors. PER YEAR IK ADVANCE At 20 we jazz, at 40 we dance, at 60 we condemn. 0:0 The hardest thing on earth to lose is a bad reputation. :o: The difference between a railroad official and a porter is a tlp,. 0:0 The railroad bosses sat down pret ty hard upon President Harding's proposal for settling the strike. But Mr. Harding will remain president just the same. :o: Our friend. Will Maupin, was the hind man in the race for governor on the democratic primary m-ia. There is one thing about our friend, in victory or defeat, he is always a democrat. Hold on. Will, there is a better day dawning. :o: Monarchist groups in Europe are plotting to set "up thrones in Ba varia, the Rhineland. Austria and Hungary. With things looking so promising for banished dynasties we wonder we don't hear of the Stuarts showing themselves again. :o: Every once in a while you see some young person about the age of 13 who can't be told anything; and it is likely nobody will ever know more than- they do until they are parents and have some children about the age of 18 who will tell them much. :o: The girls in this country used to worry almost exclusively about whether they would prove acceptable to Flo Ziegfield or not, but now a good many of them seem mainly con cerned in arraying themselves in a , manner best calculated to get by a jury. :o: Will Hays complains that persons' who know nothing about the busi ness are named on movie censor boards. But when was anybody who knew anything about the business ever named on any board formed for the purpose of directing the af fairs of other persons? :o: Europe is still hopelessly retard ed. A Bulgarian student in Paris protests against the appointment of his sister to a diplomatic post. Us ing the obsolete formula: "Women's place i3 at home." Wherever the new woman hangs her hat or manipulates her vanity bag is home, sweet home, to her. -:o: Have ycu ever injured anyone while driving a car: E. S. Jordan, safety expert of the National Auto mobile Chamber of Commerce, says 325,000 people were Injured in auto accidents last year. This means that one car in each 32 injured someone during 1921. Workmen in dynamite mills must look on autos with dread 0:0 Geraldine Farrar is making her husband, Lou Tellegen, step. She Is not only seeking divorce, but is al so suing him to recover over $9,000 lent him during their married life. Our judgment 13 that the lady stand3 a better show of securing the di vorce than she does the money. He will fight harder to keep the money. :o: A terrible fight was made against Senator Jim Reed down in Missouri yesterday. We have known him for at least thirty-five years, and no bet ter democrat ever trod the byways of this grand old state than Senator Reed. The night was never too dark and weather too stormy for him to get out and work for democratic suc cess. . :o: People owning vacant lots usually are holding them 83 a speculation. They expect to make money from them. Aren't they, then, under the greater obligation not to permit the lots to be a nuisance to the neigh borhood? Is it too much to expect the owners to cut the weeds, to keep trash off the lots and to refrain from harming adjacent property with glaring billboards. 0:0 The Japanese make it plain that altogether they stand ready to ful fill the terms of "lhe Washington agreement respecting reduction of armament, they will not proceed with the scrapping of any ship un til France ratifies the treaty. They expect France to ratify, but do not feel that they can afford to act pre-t maturely. This is reasonable. Mean time, there are others who would be glad to know what France's purpose is in regard to ratification- A rood deal of valuable time has been lost. SHERIFF'S SALE State of Nebraska.
