George Reed, Weeping Water Man
Now in Missionary Wcrk in Dark
Continent, Writes Old Friends
The following extracts are taken
from a letter written to G. L. Spohn
of Weeping Water by George Reed,
well known Nebraskan -who is now
in the missionary work of the Meth
odist church on the dark continent
and who Is well known to a large
circle of friends in Plattsmoyth and
vicinity where he has often visited.
The letter of Mr. Reed is reprinted
from the Weeping Water Republi
can: "I am spending a month in this
old town, Timbuctoo, on the edge of
the bend in the Niger river. It used
to be an important town as it was
the meeting place of the great cara
vans that came across the desert
from North Africa bringing merchan
dise from Europe and Salt from the
desert, and the traders from the
Soudan, who came in their boat?
bringing grain, gold, slaves, etc.
That is all past now. Slavery with
its horrors has been abolished and
railroads and river steamers bring
merchandise instead of camels. Once
a year the Salt caravan comes, when
there are five to seven thousand cam
els here with their wild looking
drivers. The market place now is
'11 of these men, as they are gather
ing here for the out bound journey
As the peace anniversary, the 11th,
there were races, among them a
camel race you and especially
Richard and Beatrice would have
been much interested in it the
dark-skinned bushy haired pen of
the desert and the long leggd awk
ward animals. :i

many."
