Neb., u aecond-cl&ss mall matter R. A. BATES, Publisher SUBSCRIPTION PRICE $2.00 PER YEAR IN ADVANCE Don't tag on behind; better be a cow's horn than her tail. :o: In a weather way this new year is the best of old time's babies. People talk about cheap money, but none of it drifts our way. :o: The Turks are said to be about ready to give up everything but money. :o:- - Even the government fixers seem to think fair prices mean all the pub lic will pay. :o: Hv this time Mr. Gerard must be realizing that his boom is not a grow ing variety. :o: If the average man had some mint and had some julep he would have some mint julep. :o: Attorney General Palmer does not talkas much like a presidential pos sibility as he did at first. :o: Beiger will be getting an idea he is presidential timber if they do not cut him down good and hard. :o: Some of the country papers still are grumbling more about the day light saving last summer than the daylight robberies now. :o: A man who received a package of eggs by mail the other day found half of the contents missing. That's what you call partial post. :o: Ten Provinces in Mexico were vis ited by earthquakes last week. Un fortunately, the quakes did not shake the cusscdness out of the people. Now that Washington has ruled that booze may still be used for kitchen purposes, a man advertises for a job as cook. Suppose his spe cialty must be stews. :o: The league of nations will not be the issue in the next campaign asserts Champ Clark. The paramount issue, he says, will be domestic. In many households it is that already. :o: No doubt it would help Mr. Hoov er's young boom if he would find something for housewives to do with all these food substitutes which have been cluttering up the basement and attic since he sold them broadcast two years ago. :o: Back in the good old days a dollar used to get up o:i its hind legs and yell like a grand opera tenor, but now it makes no more noise than the kid glove dropping into a bed of mortar. Just a faint "squash" ancl nothing more. :o: The high cost of print paper is giving certain country editors a lit' tie something else to talk about be-, sides the hideous indifference of the business men in failing to support the town band, basket ball team, ly ceum course and other non-essentials in style to which they have been accustomed. NOTICE ADMINISTRATOR'S SALE. RESIDENT OF COUN TY FOR 48 YEARS James M. Robertson, Clerk of the Districc Court, Has Resided Here Near Half Century From Thursday's Daily. Forty-eight years ago on January 10, 1S72, there arrived in ' IMatts- mouth a young man, who had arriv ed only a short time before from his native land of Scotland, and who had set his mind on making his mark in the new world in which he was lo cating. This young man was James M. Robertson, who had on January 1, 1S72, firt,t set foot on the United States soil at Portland, Maine, and attracted by the opportunities in the country west of the Mississippi, he came to Nebraska to make hi.-? home. During the years since his arrival here, Mr. Robertson has resided on his farm near Louisville and in that city until coming to Plattsmouth to reside twenty-five years ago. There are few men who enjoy the general gcod feeling and respect of the people of the county such as is commanded by Mr. Robertson and his pleasant and accommodating conduct of his otlice has made friends of all those who have had the oppor tunity of meeting him in a busine way and it is safe to say that "Jim" Robertson, as he is well known to the older resi;lent3 of the county, ha-j more friends to the square mile than any man in the county. The railroads in dispensable to our whole economic life, and rail way securities' urc at the very heart of most in vestmen t3, lame and small. puLI.e and priv ate, by individuals and by institutions. WOODROW WILSON THE war could not have been won without railroads. Transport by rail and sea is an indispensable arm of national defence. Carrying capacity, from the wheat fields and the mines and the steel mills to the front lines in France, was the measure of our power in war. And it is .the measure of our power in peace. Industrial expansion increasing national prosperity ' greater world trade are vitally dependent on railroad growth. The limit to the productive power of this country is the limit set by railroad ..capacity to haul the products of our industry. The amount of freight carried on American rails doubled from 1897 to 1905 since that year it has doubled ttnin. It Will double still again. To haul this rapidly growing traffic" the country must have more railroads more cars and engines more tracks and terminals. Sound national legislation, broad-visioned public regula tion will encourage the expansion of railroads, without which the nation cannot grow. ?hh admibement ii puhlhlicd byilic Slssociatioti ofOiaiLucuj xecidLvel, . i .- iaT.vtaiLa 0 H'HI iniixyi II I i I'lll IIMI l llll II III II III II Mil Those tlfsiring itifornurtiim concerning the .jUrortif ritun ! ion miry i.hlniii l,t-rt-ttire t'if trrtftny In Tiie Axatiriation of liaihnty Execntivrr, CI Br'jtuSimz: f YjiI; Poultry Wanted!
