Sr.. who was i perated on two weeks ago at her home iu the west part of the city is now doing very nicely and seems well on the road to recovery from the effects of the severe attack of appen dicitis. This case has been a very peculiar and unusual one s Mrs. Janda is past 70 years of age and her attack with this malady at such an advanced age is rather unusual. Her case had become very critical and made necessary an operation at the home on West Vine street which was performed hy Dr. I J. Ford cf Oma ha and Dr. 1. J. Flynn of this city. The improvement of the patient has been the cause of a great deal of pleasure to the family of this esti mable ladv. The na tion is commencing on one of the most eventful years in its history and one that will be filled with great op portunities for the development of the highest ideals upon which our government is founded. In the year just closed there have been many great achievements in the citv. state and nation and all have progressed along the highway or im provement. In rlattsmouth the year of 1919 has saw many improvements and changes made in the life of the community but chief among the improvements has been the extension of the street improvement program that has resulted in a great portion of the residence streets being curbed and made in keeping with the prog- later time when they may be paved and make in keeping with the pro ress of the times. The years has saw many improve ments made in the business houses of the citv and a general advance ment in the life of the community which has had a verv noticeable ef fect iu making the city more mod ern and up to date. But what lias been done and said in the past is a coniDleted story and It is to the future that the commun ity must now direct their gaze and prepare to make the year 1920 one of the best years that has ever visit ed the city and county. meeting of the bar association next December. Anon Raymond of Omaha was elected secretary and Raymond M. Crossman of Omaha treasurer. Fred A. Wright of Scotts- bluff was elected to the executive council. Other members of this conn cil continue in office. Resolutions regretting the death of the late Samuel H. Sedgwick, associ ate justice of the state supreme court were passed by unanimous vote. It w'il be one more yea- before the Nebraska State Bar association i prepared 'to ask the state legislature o Incorporate the bar of the state through statutory proviim. This was determined .it the final business session of the stat3 associa ticn at the Hotel Fonteiulie yester day afternoon, after repeat?! but fu tile attempts of opponents to the pro posed incorporation measuv? to ki'.l it. After several acrimonious debates, in which the speakers unfolded a multitude of reasons, causes and ef fects pro and con. the barristers vot ed to adopt the plan to incorporation, but with the proviso that the draft of the proposed acts be referred back to the committee for further amend ments and improvements. Two attepts to kill the proposed bill by submitting it to a referendum of the lawyers of the state were de feated by a wide majority. Defeat Amendments. Following: the motion of E. E. Good of Wahoo that the proposed bill be adopted, but sent back to the committee for further revision, C. H. Ryan of Lincoln, an avowed opponent of the measure, offered an amend ment that a new committee be ap pointed and that the draft be'sub initted to a referendum vote cf the lawyers of the state. Ben Baker of Omaha then offered a second amendment calling for a two-ballot vote, one on the blanket proposition of incorporation and the other on the draft as it was pre pared by the committee. Both amendments were defeated, the Ryan amendment by. a vote of 50 to 32, and the Baker amendment by a vote of 52 to 35. Up at Next Meeting. Judge Good's original motion then was voted by a large majority. The association then ordered the commit tee to prepare a tentative draft and send copies to every lawyer in the state by May 1, 1920. The lawyers then would be given until November 1 to make suggestions for changes. The committee was instructed to in corporate these changes in a new draft' to be submitted to the annual From Wednesday) Dally. Yesterday afternoon Eugene M. Guilliatt of Nebraska City and Miss Fern Tash of Falls City were callers at the Cass county court house and seeking the county court secured from Judge A. J. Beeson the neces sary permit to become as one and on request the Judge performed the ceremony that marked the consum mating of the life's happiness of the young people. Sayles has received a number of inquiries from residents of Cass county as whether or not special licenses are required to hunt of trap fur bearing animal.-: in t'is state. The inquiries have arisen over the fact that one of trapper has been fined at Nebraska City for failure to comply with the law i: thi; lespect and as a consequence bus been compelled to pay for his failure to havf a license. The law sets the price of a license to hunt and trap fur bearing animals at $2 whils; the ordinary hunting or fishing licence costs only one "smack." Mr. chivies is expecting the new 1920 licenses in a few days and will then be in : po sition to care for the demands for the licenses for the coming year. DISLOCATES THUMB At Union last evening while Lu ther Turner, the foreman for the Nebraska Gas & Electric Co. was en deavoring to start his Ford car, the animal kicked, with the result that Mr. Turner's thumb was turned back wards spraining it badly. Mr. Turn er drove from Union this morning. having had the injured member dressed, guiding the car with one hand which he found a very diffi cult proposition. He will be laid off for some time until the hand re covers sufficiently for him to take up his work again. This afternoon Sup erintendent James Kuykendall went to Murray to set a transformer for the lighting company on account of Mr. Turner not being so he could do the work. Sunday morning as the residents cf the city were preparing to wend their way toward Sunday school they were startled hy hearing the fire alarms sounded but few minutes later the recall was sounded. The fire occurred at the residence of C. If. Buffington at the corner of Sev enth and Vine streets, and was caus ed by an overheated stove. Mr. Buf fington had Started the fire to pre pare the morning meal and returned to bed and a few minutes later awoke to find the ceiling and roof around the chimney blazing quite freely.
