transportation, to their native abode,
is now fast beconiinc conversant with

Spanish tongue as the sheriff has
the task of looking over the mail of
the prisoners, and. as it is couched
in the most hichly cultivated
"spick." what the sheriff doesn't un
derstand of the language is much.

Peter Herold on the occasion of the
arrival cf a fine little daughter who

miss has been christened Jane Adelle

the advent of the little one has
broueht' great pleasure to the proud
and happy father.

Williams in the north portion of the
city was gladdened by the fact that
a fine little son and heir arrived at
their borne to reside with them in
the future. The little man tipped the

preparation of the difterent playlets
and dialogues given and it was very
entertaining throughout as the little

There were some fifty of the young
folks taking part in the program and
ail talcing part acquitted themselves
with the greatest of credit in their
respective roles. As is customary in
an entertainment of tliis nature, a
line large Christmas tree was in evi
dence as well as the good old Santa
who proved a delight to the young
I'oiks. A number of songs were giv
en during the course of the program
that aided in making the program

school of law in which he is complet

remain over Christmas here at the
home of Mrs. Hawksworth.

First Ward School Pupils Held Very
Enjoyable Program at School
Yesterdav Afternoon.

Yesterday afternoon the pupils of
the first ward school under the aus
pices of their teacher. Miss Adelia
Sayles. held a very enjoyable pro
gram at the school building and the
school was filled to its capacity by
the patrons of the school tc enjoy the
treat prepared for them. The chief
feature of the. program was the play
let. "The Joys and Sorrows of Santa
Claus" and in which Mr. and Mrs.
Santa Claus and Jack Frost were the
main characters and some 3 4 little
folks in costume participated in the
playlet and proved very pleasing in
their different roles. The playlet
was given i ntwo acts and in each of
these the young folks displayed the
greatest talent. A fine Christmas
tree had been arranged which was
decorated with offerings of candy
and other good things to eat which
were distributed bj" the teacher to
the little folks. A gift bag also was
an attractive feature of the afternoon
and in this was a gift for every mem
ber of the school and much pleasure
was derived from the sharing of the
pretty and attractive gifts.
ROADS GETTING BETTER

This morning Walter Dyers was in
the city from his home in Rock
Bluffs and reports that the road
leading to that locality is in very
good shape, due to the thoughtful
ness and labor of two of the young
farmers of that locality. Glen Fitch
horn and Charles Warga, who have
been out with team and a drag and
made the roads bo that they are pass
able for two teams Instead of the
narrow road that was made by the
few teams pabsinp over the road. For

LOCOMOTIVE OFF TRACE
From Thursday's Dally.
This morning as the wes-t bound
local freight was tnroute from this
city to Lincoln, it was laid up for a
few hours at Oreapolis as the loco
motive of the train was. off the track,
caused by running onto the derail
and all but the two rear wheels of
the tender were resting on the ties
until the local switching crew cruld
reach the scene and were able to get
the engine back on the rails pnd the
train again started on its way west
ward. VISITS MASONIC HOME
From Friday's Daily.
This morning the officers of the
Scottish Rite Woman's club of Oma
ha came down and spent several
hours at the Masonic home as well
as the Eastern Star orphanage and
distributed the Christmas offering of
the Omaha club for the benefit of the
Masc.nic home. The ladies in the
party were Mesdames IP J. McAr
itin', J. H. St ine. Robert Gilchrist,
and Fred Martin. The ladies were
delighted with the splendid manner
in which the home is progressing
and greatly enjoyed their stay at
tlje institution that the Masons of
the state have erected. The ladies
returned home this afternoon over
the liurlington.
