The folowiug, taken from tho
Gleuwood Tribune, will be of inter
est to many of the old residents of
Cass county, as it gives a graphic
story of the life of Mrs. Isaac Mc
Uroom, an old resident of this lo
cality. Mrs. McDroom is also an
aunt of J. M. Young, of this city:
Some pioneers of Glenwood will
recall Mr. and Mrs. Isaac McUrooni,
who were residents of this vicinity
from 1S34. the date of their marriage
in Glenwood, until 18C0, when they
moved to Colorado. Mrs. McBroom
was Miss Emma Brower, the adopted
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph
Brower. who came to Mills county
in 185U.
"A Denver paper tells, in detail of
the life of the pioneers, shows a
picture of Mrs. McBroom and also a
picture of the log cabin in which she
lived many years. It is the oldest
and best preserved in the Rocky
mountain region.
"Mrs. McBroom resided in Colo
rado nearly sixty years on the same
ranch at the mouth of Bear Creek
canon, twenty miles distant from
Denver. She lived to the age or st.
"The article gives the following
account of the McBrooms and their
home:
" 'Mrs. McBroom came to Colorado
In the spring of 1S60 in a prairie
schooner driven across the plains byt
her husband and drawn by oxen. T!i,
couple had previously been married
August 6. 1S54, at Glenwood. Iowa.,
the birthplace of Mrs. McBroom.
" 'Immediately upon arriving in
Denver McBroom made preparations
to homestead a piece of land near
what is now Fort Logan. He chose
the site at the mouth of the canon
and proceeded to cultivate it. Later,
extensive irrigation ditches were
dug and the McBroom ranch became
one of the most beautiful and pro
ductive in this part of the state.
" 'The McBroom's first home was
a cabin built of cottonwood logf,
"chinked" with adobe. The chimney
at one end of the structure was con
structed of adobe; and so substantial
was the building that it stands to
this day, one of the oldest and best
preserved in the Rocky mountain
region.
" 'Several years after their arrival
McBroom built a then up-to-date
house of brick. For more than forty
years Mrs. McBroom lived in this
house. She always declared that she
would die there.
"'The McBroom claim was the
second in Colorado to be proved up.
In those days ranchers worked with
their irrigating shovels in one hand
and their rifles in the other, because
of frequent attacks by Indians, then
very unfriendly to the white set
tlers. The McBroom irrigation ditch
is counted 'So. V on Bear creek.
" 'The old cabin was built by Me
lt room and his younger brother. Johi
McBroom. and for years was a sort
of 'half-way house' for the famous
trappers and scouts of the early days,
notably Kit Carson. Colonel Boone,
a grandson of Daniel Boone. Ton
Tobin. Dick Wootten. Jim Haker and
i Tom Books. Indians have frequently
been sheltered under its roofs for
the hOFDitalitv of the McBrooms was
proverbial. John McBroom died 2S
years airo.
" 'Mrs. McBroom is survived by z
daughter, Mrs. Clark Payton. of Fort
Logan.' "
