A. ROBERTSON, Lawyer. -J. East of Ililey Hotel. , Coates Block, J. Second Flcor. ' llcrtui Antipu.s. tyrannical Te trarth of Jmlea, is hated hy his people. Fowardly, cruel and vacil lating, he clinsrs to power hy curry ing favor with the Koman Caesars; hut the oppressed Judeans constant ly clamor for a return of the old Hycranian dynasty. The direct heir to this rival line, and chief candi date for the oHice of Hiph Priest, is Prince avid, brother of Queen Mar ian. Herod is completely under the sway of the sinister "Salome", beau tiful princess of the Herodian dy nasty, who hopes some clay to wield imperial power. "Salome" fears the growing influence of Prince David, and after he is created llish Priest, prevails upon Sejanus, Captain of the Guards, to drown hint in his hath. The next obstacle in the path of the; ambitious Princess is the Queen. Therefore, when Marian sends a ceremonial cup of wine to Herod upon his departure for Rome, "Sa lome" poisons it and arouses the lvimr's snsnicion acainst his wife. He sives the wine to the Queen's timid. Naomi, who drinks it and drops dead. "Salome" deceitfully intercedes for Marian and saves her for the moment from execution. Put later she tells the Queen that Herod caus ed Prince David's murder and con spires with her to kill him. Herod is awaked from his sleep by a scream from "Salome" to line! his Queen tryins to stab him, and "Salome" holding back the dagger. Marian is immediately beheaded by order of her royal husband. With her path to the throne ap parently cleared, "Salome" is alarm ed by the denunciations of one John the Haptist, who bitterly rebukes the sins of Herod and his court. Mov ed by curiosity and by a desire to win the strange preacher to her side, she goes to meet him and at tempts to seduce him with her wiles. She is scorned for her effort. Yet strangely attracted by the stern ascotic. she again visits Mm in prison, where Herod has t hi own him for stirring up sedition among the people, and using every passion ate appeal known to her sex, she en treats him to love. When he again denounces her, "she vows to have him destroyed. On the same night a great throng is gathered in the palace to partake of the King's birthday feast. "Sa lome" appears before Herod and be gins a wild, sensuous, fascinating dance which so inflames the doting Monarch, that he exclaims: "Ask of me what thou wilt, and it shall be gathered even unto the half of my Kingdom." "Salome" calls for the head of John the Baptist on a charger. While she is gloating over her horrid prize, a terrific storm of wind, lightning and hail strikes the palace and the guests flee in fear. Herod, in sup erstitious terror, cites to his sold iers, "Kill that woman", and "Sa lome's" evil life is ended under sharp-spiked Roman shields. "Salome" with Theda Bara in the title role; will be presented by Wil liam Fox at the Gem Theatre, Sat urday matinee and evening. i. Tin-: ihth ICT rot ir of rs4 toon.
