KEEPING. HIM BUSY JUST NOW.
From Thursday's Daily.
L. C. Snipes, the county agricul
tural agent, of Weeping Water, is
getting 'his' just at this time, lie
has been directing the disposal of
seed corn at the Stull cribs and tells
of some one holding a turn-number
well up toward a hundred jumping
into the crib ahead of a man hold
ing a number below the dozen mark.
He said they were like a lot of
school boys scrambling after pea
nuts. Night before last Mr. Snipes held
a meeting at Greenwood, after hav
ing been at the crib all day, and af
ter he had attended to the business
connected with this meeting he re
turned to his home at Weeping Wat
er, geting to bed away after one
o'clock Avith another hard day's la
bor ahead of him at the crib. Still,
with three or four hours sleep night
ly he keeps right on going. Rut
these, you know, are stringent times
and besides this is the county agent's
particularly busy season.
FOR SHOOTING BIRDS
From Thursday's Daily.
Some one has been shooting birds
in the city contrary to the laws aad
the ordinances of the city and in an
effort to stop the practice the coun
ty authorities are going'to prosecute
those who have been guilty of such
offense. Resides the matter of the
killing of the birds which are dcs;r
ed by the farmers and others, the
shooting within the city limits makes
it dangerous for the citizens.
FATHER REPORTED BETTER.
From Thursday's Hail v.
About a week ago Howard Xewton
was called to the western portion of
the state on account of the serious
illnesss of his father, who make
his home on a ranch there Mr.
Newton returned home this morning
after having stayed with his pareats
for about a week, and reported that
he is greatly improved in his condi
tion though :-tili far from being well.
THE SEEC CORK QUESTION
From Thursday's Daily.
" Yesterday there wa:. shelled and
delivered to the elevator of Nelson
Jean the rem iit.d.-r of the teed corn
stored in the L. Stull cribs. This
corn will be lhi of, through the
elevator, to farmer.; hereabouts as
long as it laats at tN uniform price
of $4.0 per' biMiel. The corn is
shelled and in very good shape for
being ungrribd. Rut as witli all
such corn it contain.; some points of
ears and sn al! grains and if the pur
chaser so lie.-iiei he can have it grad
ed for si'.e and to eliminate these
troublesome rn';-':' of the ears.
Iu order to come out on the corn,
the additional charge above the price
r.t the crib h:;s to be made. The
county agent has the matter of dis
position of this seed corn in hand,
and those wishing to obtain good
seed corn can get it as long as.it
lasts at the elevator of Mr. Jean at
the Missouri Pacific station, but it
is quite probably it will not last
a great length of time as there is al
ready less than live hundred bushels
left.
THE GIRL OF THE WEST
From Thursday's Daily.
There is a little girl in the vc:t,
living on a farm near Kearney, by
the najnc of Horothy Mae Shurigar
who bas arrived and who calls 11
M. Godwin and wife grandfather
and grandmother. This pleases them
immensely and equally certain arc
fully as jubilant over the fact. Rut
then the little girl of the west is a
fine little Nebraska maiden for sure
INJURED BY AUTOMOBILE.
From Thursday's Daily.
Yesterday morning, John W. Fat
tcr went to his farm northwest of
the city to look after things there,
and as the car in which he contem
plated making the trip was not be
having at its best, he took another
which was standing nearby, and on
which there was a power attach
ment applied to the front end of
the crank shaft. After he had start
ed the power, he thought that there
might possibly be -need of water in
the radiator, which he got and pro
ceeded with the task of tilling "the
same. In doing so he crowded close
to the car and his clothing became
entangled in the power attachment,
drawing him. up against t he pulley
and throwing him off his feet, whirl
ing him around with considerable
force.' The machinery caught one
leg of his pants and tearing the
clothing away the calf of his leg was
badly lacerated-and "mangled, the
skin being torn and the muscles
ruptured. Had it not been for the
presence of mind of Wesley Rtirdlck,
the man who lives on the place and
who was nearby at the time, which
prompted him to turn off the spark
and shut off the gas almost instant-,
ly, the results would probably have
been much more serious and Mr. Fal
ter might even have been killed. As
it was the injury was so great as to
require fourteen stitches to close
the wound, which will lay the young
man up for a considerable length of
time.
Johnny ia now resting comfortab
ly at his home in the city, but has
a pretty sore leg as a result of his
experience.
SIXTEEN YEARS MARRIED
From Thursday's Daily.
Yesterday marked an epoch of
sixteen years in the married life of
Mr. and Mrs. B. G. Wurl and last
evening a company of a dozen of
their friends slipped up on them by
surprise. One of the company was
delegated to go to the fJront door
and knock in May-Rasket-hanging
style, while the rest "rushed" the
back kitchen door for admittance.
The scheme worked well and Mr.
and Mrs. Wurl were completely ak
en by surprise. The men folk in
dulged in their favorite sport, that
of card playing, while the women
engaged in knitting and social con
versation. The party brought along
some eats, and at a late hour re
freshments were served. The friends
had secured a casserole, which was
presented to Mr. and Mrs. Wurl
with best wishes for a much longer
and successful journey on the sea of
married life. .
BABY GIRL AT HOME OF
MR. AND MRS. SMITH
From Thursday's Daily.
When we came along from our
dinner, as we were passing Fricke's
we heard what some might have
thought was the voice of a lost child,
calling papa! Was stopped and listen
ed and we heard it distinctly aga.n.
Papa! and a pause, and then Taa!
was wafted in the air, the voice seem
ed strangely familiar, and we kn?w
it was a man's voice, and we looked
mi me store, out we ant not see
Claude C Smith there, nor could we
iee any one down cella-, but that
was where the sound came from. Rut
when we bad gotten down the street
a little way, some one hailed us and
said it is a girl. Mother and daugh
ter doing well, and Father Smith.
well "He's All Right."
