Dis couragement felt here over the news of the overthrow of the Kerensky government at Fetrosrad is temp ered fcy hope that the extreme redicals who have seized the capital may not he able to extend their con trol over the army or any consider able part of the country. However, it is feared that much blood must be shed and the nation further demoralized before any pow er rises above the turmoil strong enough to control the situation. The state' department and the Russian embassy were without offi cial cdvvs tonight, consequently there was no official comment on the situation. Informally it was point ed out-that with the telegraph lines and the semi-official news agencies at Petrograd in the hands of the radicals, it would be difficult to learn the true state of affairs, al though there wa3 no disposition to question the collapse of the provi sional government's power in the capital. CUH BOYS DESCRIPTION OF WAR PREPARATIONS From Thursday's Daily. llenipsted, New York, Nov. 1, 1917 To Friends of Cass County :- We have been going to write to our friends, but this is the first we have had an opportunity. First we will try and tell you of our camp and its surroundings. We have a very pretty camp, located about two miles from Ilempsted, N. Y., on Long Island. There are several different organizations here. There is the aviation school here and airplanes are as common as Fords are at home. One fellow here has broken the World's record for going high. His record on flying i3 sure splendid, he went 29,000 feet and they thought he was lost and they sent two other fellow's after him and they could not locate him any place. So they1 had to-give it up and come back. down. In a few, hours after he came down J" . smiling from ear to ear and wanted to go again. Wonder what Kaiser Bill will think when he gets over his army dropping bombs on him. We will now try and give you our drill schedule so you will have some idea of what we are doing. And if you don't think we are busy just get a broom stick for a gun and follow our schedule. First thing in the morning is the first call at 5:30. (Well fire call in blowing and I will have to go or get commed Quarters for 30 rays. Well the fire is over nothing but an officers tent burned up.) When first call blows in the morning all we can hear is our corporals gentle voice, 'Get up boys and build a. fire. Next comes a march at 5:40, pretty early isn't it? Reveille and assem bly at 5:45. Mess call at six. Fa tigue and sick call at 6:35. Non commissioned officers school at 6:33. Drill call at 7:20. Recall at 11:30. Officers and first sergeants at 11:30 Mess Call 12:00 M. Fatigues and drill at 1:05. Recall at 4:30 pretty long stretch. Retreat (inspection of arms except on days when there is parade, when retreat is called at 5:30, assembly at 5:40, Retreat at 5:45, mess at G:00, officers call 7:00 call to quarters at 9: CO, taps at 9:45. That is the call which makes the boys go to bed. We are" bound to tell you of our little joy ride we had the other day. They say we were on our way to France, anv- way we went out to see nine days and ten nights, cn the 10th night the boilers on our ship went wrong and we had to leave our fleet and come back. The second day at sea we were all pretty sick, and most of the fellows fed the fish a plenty. On the ships we enly had two meals a day and they weren't nothing extra good. We could have eaten twice as much as they gave us, nor did we have much liberty on the ships. The ship was very crowded as it was carrying C.000 men, which is quite a bunch of fellows to be together on one ship. We were awfully crowd ed and we were just tickled to death to get back to land. Now we are back in the same camp and the same tent. One thing we are glad Ave are all back, and all the home bunch is together with the exception of our corporal who is from Pacific Junction. lie is a very nice fellow and is very saving for us. He saves us in the fact that his hair is red and when he is here we do not need any light but when he is out we use candles. The names of the fellows in our tent are Corporal J. C. Shuff ler, E. L. Murray, Kdward Ripple, William Hoffman, George and Hu'h Kearnes. Ralph Allen. Ralph Lair and Alfred Wilson, and a nice bunch of fellows, and they sure do lmow how to cook beans. As it is getting late, we will close and send you our best wishes. From thVbbjs of Com- I 16$ U:j3. Infantry. CORPORAL SCIIUFFLElt, E. L. MURRAY, EDWARD RIPPLE. Wolfe departed 3'osterday fcr Vir ginia to do what they can for their father in his illness. We hone lie will soon recover and be. able to re turn to his home here in the west.
