The following letter received from
W. It. Holly, member of the Machine
Gun company, 355th Infantry, speaks
for itself, in telling how the home
boys may find a little more pleasure
and recreation while serving in Un
cle Sam's big army down at' Camp
Funston. Let us all join hands and
send the boys down a little Christ
mas present in the way of sufficient
cash to equip themselves for this
line of amusement, and at the same
time enclose a few boxes of the good
old home-made cigars for their after
supper pleasure:

Friend Bob:
Athletics in Camp Funston are on
the boom. We are organizing foot
ball teams and basket ball teams,
etc., among all the companies. The
Battallions have a team and the reg
iments each a team. The company
teams play each other and the best
company team represents the battal
lion and the the best battallion team
represents the regiment in the regi
mental contests. So you can see that
there are some mighty good games
to be played. The Government is too
poor to furnish money to buy equip
ment in the way of football togs and
basket ball uniforms and balls, etc.,
so the men have to purchase the out
fits for themselves. The men in the
various companies have gotten to
gether by counties and are asking
their counties to help them raise a
fqnd to equip their company teams.
The athletics help to pass away the
time and form splendid fun for the
fellows. You see "All work and no
fun makes Jack a dull boy," and
General Wood allows us to play any
game we desire, besides that devel
ops the "personal contact" idea, the
very basis tipon which the present
war is being fougbt.
I thought that you would be just
the right man to start this thing in
our county, using the Journal as the
medium of collection and to properly
advertise, the matter. The Machine
Gun company has enrolled the ma
jority of the Cass county bunch 42
men, and we want a team properly
outfitted. Believe us, we want Cass
county on the Funston map and we
are going to put her there with the
help of the Journal and those who
want to do their "bit" for their
country and for the boys in camp.
Things are running fine down here
and we are getting to be regular sol
diers with a capital "S" on the Sol
dier. We had competitive drill to
day and our company led. That, of
course, makes us feel mighty good,
because this is pretty nearly a Cass
county company. Yours,

What We Will Do
As the above letter states, the boys
want the Journal to start . this col
lection proposition over Cass county,
and we are going to do it. We are
going to set the day when the con
tributions will close, and the pro
ceeds will be sent to the boys at Camp
Funston with the understanding that
the money Is for all the Cass county
boys. Let us set the closing day for

THE SMALL CITY'S PLACE
Population is divided about equally between the country;
and citv In the country, conditions are very much the same
everywhere. The city dweller is of many kinds. The citizen
of the small town is confronted with small town conditions,
the man in the medium sized city has still other surroundings,
and the resident of a great city must live and conduct his af
fairs in yet another manner.
Twentieth century civilization is complex and human ac
tivity much diversified.
The prosperity and happiness of each class depends en

dollar sent to a distant city adds just that much more power
of those far away who are not interested in your welfare,
and weakens you just that much in yuir fight for good roads,
good government and good schools.

A letter from Cassius Carey, writ
ten from Deming, New Mexico, to
the Journal reporter, tells of the
U. S. army boys buying Liberty bonds
to further aid the government in the
prosecution of this war. In this
manner the boys are serving their
country doubly, by giving their time
and their money. Why then should
we here at home be slow in respond
ing with our money? The soldier
boys are surely manifesting the right
spirit and one which could well be
emulated anywhere,
given below.

My. Dear Friend:
Well, how are you all of the old
class of Loyal Sons by this time? I
hope you are well. I am feeling fine
and dandy and enjoying life to. the
fullest extent. I don't suppose you
have very many left after so many
have gone to the army from the old
class. Harry Winscot and I were
going to Christian church this morn
ing, but Harry could not get off. I
have been attending services at the
Y. M. C. A. I hope the church at
tendance is keeping up in good shape.
Are there lots of Libert' bonds be
ing sold there? I have purchased a
hundred dollar bond myself, and
most of the boys are buying from
50 to 300 dollars worth, besides giv
ing their time and life if necessary
for the cause. So you see the boys
In Uncle Sam's uniforms are there
and over when it comes to helping
the government. Tell all the folks
at the church whom I know, "Hello"
for me. Maybe I will see them all
again some day.
We are having fine weather down
here now, the nights are cool and
the days are hot fine to sleep. The
Rev. McCluskey is pastor of the large
Christian church down here. I see
something in the Journal every week
about the church. Believe me, the
old Plattsmouth Journal is a welcome
visitor to all the boys. Raymond
Larson gets it and I read his paper.
Thi3 country is the nearest to a
desert that I ever saw. I do not
know how long it will be before we
get to go to France, but I hope it
will be pretty soon. Answer soon.

GOES TO HOSPITAL
FOR TREATMENT
From Thursday's Dally. '
Miss Edith Grassman was a pass
enger to Omaha this afternoon,
where she will tomorrow have an
operation for the removal of her
tonsils and another growth in her
forehead, which has been causing
her some trouble for some time past.
It is hoped that this will give her
relief from the inconvenience which
the growth has caused her.

A DEGREE OF DIVORCE
From Thursday's Dally.
In the case which was on trial
in the district court yesterday,
wherein Mrs. Blanch Welton ask
ed a separation from her husband,
Albert D. Welton, and custody of
the children, of whom there are
five, alledging extreme cruelty and
Inebriation on the part of the hus
band, the decree was granted as
prayed for. No alimony was ask
ed in the petition of the plaintiff.
Mr. C. A. Rawls was the attorney
for the defense, while W. A. "Ro
bertson and C. L. Rein appeared for
the defense. There will probably be
no cause coming on for hearing un
til the first of the week, unless it be
a possible motion or so.
