London, Sept. 30. The meager
reports from the British front in the
west allowed to pass the censor tell
of a new method of warfare by the
Hermans. In making atttacks on
the British lines they cloaked their
advance with smoke barrages. They
also used flame projectors.
The veil of secrecy which has
hung over the operations along the
British front in Belgium and north
ern France since the latter part of
the week still remains impenetrable,
so far as the news offerings of the
British war offices are concerned.
Since Friday nothing except brief
statements have reached the out
Fide world from Field Marshal Ilaig's
headquarters.
Sunday night's report chronicles
the repulse of three German attacks
in the Ypres sector, with losses to
the attackers, including a number
of prisoners and several machine
guns.
Use Smoke Earrage.
The Germans, the British state
ment says, after heavily bombarding
their objectives, employed a thick
smoke barrage to cloak their advance
and also used flame throwing ap
paratus. The artillery activity con
tinues between the Ypres-Comines
canal and Zonnebeke and in the
Nieuport sector.
The Berlin official communication
of Sunday, characterizes the artil
lery duel along the Belgian coast
and southward to the Nipres-Comines
canal as "severe." Berlin also in
dicates that the British troops are
keeping the enemy on the alert by
stabs at various points from recon
noitering parties.
Make New Attacks on London.
Three German airplanes are re
ported to have been brought down
in a new raid of great force on
England. Two squadrons following
others flying singly crossed the
English coast. But four or five
reached London. Three of them are
unofficially reported destroyed. The
raiders dropped bombs everywhere.
Italians Start Eig Offensive.
Meanwhile, the Italians have
started another big offensive against
the Austrians on the Isonzo front.
On the Bainsizza plateau height
positions have been stormed and
taken by General Cadorna's forces
and 1,409 prisoners captured. By
their new successes the Italians have
brought their line almost to the
bridgehead of the Chiapovana river,
near Podlaca and Madonlo, which
also gives them possession of nearly
all of the southwestern portion of
the plateau.
The Austrians, realizing the
strategic value of the Italian gain,
have delivered extremely heavy
country attacks, but to no purpose.
Pola Again Bombarded.
Daily the Italians continue their
aerial bombardments of Austrian
positions with large quantities of
explosives. The great fortress of
Pola again ha3 recieved a visitation
and enemy depots at Berie, near
Xabresina, northeast of Trieste, on
the Gulf of Trieste, have been bombed.
Cannon Battle on Meuse.
Faris, Sept. 20. A heavy artil
lery action has been in progress on
both sides of the Meuse. Verdun
sector, while on the Aisne front the
German infantry attacked the French
troops, but were repulsed with con
siderable losses.
The official communication Issued
by the war office tonight also reports
air raids around Dunkirk, where
reveral civilians were killed.
Three Planes Brought Down.
London, Sept. 30. The London
district was again raided tonight by
German airmen. There is a cir
cumstantial, but unconfirmed report
that three enemy machines were
brought down.
While there was a bright moon
there also was a slight mist and

But Few Reach London.
Field Marshal Lord French -reports
that two groups of enemy ma
chines, followed others flying singly,
crossed Kent and Essex coasts be
tween 6:40 and 8 o'clock 'tonight.
They came toward London. About
ten penetrated the outer defenses,
but only four or five got through to
London itself.
Bombs were dropped in Kent, Es
sex and London. No details of the
damage or casualties have yet been
received. .

A majority of the people went early
to their homes and the services in
the churches were held at 5 o'clock

Trip Through Greeley and Garfield
field Counties Is Revelation
of Wealth.
Lincoln, Neb., Sept. 30. Wes
tern Nebraska, the "sandhill region"
Is experiencing its greatest prosper
ity, declares Will Maupin, newly
appointed director of the state.
Here is Mr. Maupin's story of a
trip which he made there:
"One glorious feature about the
"sandhills of Nebraska" is that most
of them are not really sandhills.
"The director of publicity has just
returned from a little scouting trip
that took him to the northern
boundry of Garfield county, and
which enabled him to see most of the
North Loup river valley and the
valley of the Calamus, together with
the hill lands overlooking those
valleys.
"Another good thing about the
sandhills is that this year they are
producing wealth beyond the fond
est dreams of people who have al
ways maintained that this section
would some day come Into Its own.
I have seen no finer corn anywhere
in the state than I saw in Greeley
and Garfield counties. And it is out
of the way of frost right now. But
even the immense corn crop of those
counties is not a marker to the hay
and grass crops.
"And hay, by the way. Is legal
tender these days. There was con
siderable wheat in that section this
year, and the acreage sown this fall
is immense, all things considered.
Burwell, Garfield county, claims to
be the largest cream shipping sta
tion in Nebraska, and from the
figures I gleaned there I am inclined
to believe the claim is well founded
At any rate, cream to the value of
more than $11,000 was shipped from
Burwell during the year ending Sep
tember 1, and at the same time the
Burwell creamery took something
like $35,000 worth.
"I have estimated Nebraska's corn
crop this year at 225.000,000 bush
els. My recent trip inclines me to
increase my estimate something like
twelve or fifteen million bushels.
But more than all else I was im
pressed by the dairying possibilities
of a section of Nebraska that too
many Nebraskans ' believe to be a
barren waste of sandhills. There is
an immense amount or good agricul
tural land In that section sure
crops and comparatively cheap land.
Land that was considered of little
worth twenty years ago is now sell
ing at from $75 to $100 an acre,
but of course it is well improved and
not far from railroad faciliites. But
the opportunities up there are just
as good, and almost as numerous.
