STANDARD OIL COMPANY (Nebraska) Omaha MAIL ORDER HOUSE a r r r wo a rTrtcl nAiwul AuAIN tmm UuW The mail order houses are once more fendine; b.:ek the money for su rar orders, but nevertheless are keeping the rest of the buyers money ar.u filling the bidar.ee of the orders sent in. They will not sell sujrar at te price quoted in their catalogue. Though it is one of their principal baits to secure customers, they have the effrontery to continue to send the sug-;r money back. A year or two afro Secretary Cunningham of t he Iowa Retailers' Association, chair man of the Trade Relations Commit tee of the National Association of Retail Grocers, filed a complaint be fore the Federal Trade Commission alleging: unfair trade practices. It was estimated that several million dollars were involved in the orders on which the money was sent back before. They offered sugar at a cer tain price in connection with $10 or ?-2'l orders. They filled the orders, but sent the sugar money back. Now they are at it again. We have re ceived reports both from western Iowa and from Michigan of, the re turning of sugar money. Of course they would have lost money if they had filled the sugar orders. They do r.ot propose to do that. What differ ence if it was the sugar offer which led the purchaser to send to them. Better cheat the customer than to cut down that annual profit of millions cf dollars. It is time to push the Fed eral Trade Commission apain for some action. We have written Mr. Cunningham tellinfr him of this, on the chance that lie has not heard of the new action. ' J' - . : G N DEFEAT FALL SF ROSS BO THEIR PART "crrner Commander of Russian Ar mies Declares Slavs Can Bring About Termination of War. " iytroprad, May 25. General Nich- oii Nicholas V. Ruzsky, who arrived here today, after relinquishing: the command of the Russian army on the northern front, spoke hopefully of he improvement in the morale of the troops on that front. lie said there was no fraternizing; with the enemy now and no deficiency in the shell supply, but that owing; to local con ditions, an offensive on a large scale was impossible. If the improvement continues and the Russian armies fulfill their duty toward their own country and their allies, General Ruzsky believes the Germans can be beaten by autumn and forced to accept the allies peace terms. General Ruzsky places great reli ance on the personal influence with the troops of Minister of War Ke- rensky. Minister of War Ke?nsky, speak ing- at Ilelsinirfors. before starting- on his tour of the front, referred to the military situation in Asia Minor, of which the official news agency quotes him as saying;: "There is danrer not onlv of losing; Armenia, but possibly part of the Caucasus." THE HEAVIEST RAINSTORM HERE IN SEVERAL YEARS From Saturday's lai!y. Yesterdav afternoon one of the heaviest rains of the season visited this locality and for several hours the downpour was quite intense, reaching; its height between 5 and " o'clock, when the rain came down in sheets for several minutes. The amount of water flowing; down the streets from the hills was the heavi est at any time this season and caused the barrels that are placed at the street intersections to float down the street until rescued by several citizens. Farmers in the city today report the storm :is being; very heavy west of the city and a g;reat many of the corn fields have been badly washed by the result of the storm nd will require replanting;. The storm seems to have been a branch of the great wind storm that swept over Kansas and a portion of west ern Nebraska. A PLEASING TREAT TO THE TEACHERS. From Saturday's Pnily. The pupils of the eighth, grade of the Central building; celebrated the close of the school year by enjoying; a picnic Thursday afternoon from -1:30 to 7 o'clock which proved a rare treat to those taking; part. The schoi arc invited the teachers of the school, Mrs. .Mae Morg-an, Miss Clara Wey rich, Miss Anna Heisei and Mr. E. F. Frans to be their g-uests on the oc casion and who thoroughly ap preciated the grood time that had been prepared for them. The picnic was held at the rifie rangre north of the city and here a suitable feast was spread, to which everyone did ample justice and it would have been diffi cult to discover a crumb after the at tack on the pood things to eat had been carried out. Games of all kinds were enjoyed and as the day drew to a close the mcmoers of the party all returned home tired and g;r- i'ly pleased with the day's treat. TO AID THE BED CROSS. The ladies of Chapter F, P. E. O. of this city, Have decided that in the fu ture the meetings of the chapter will be given over to work in aid of the Red Cross work for the sick and wounded. The ladies met yesterday afternoon at the home of Mrs. W. G. Brooks anrl decided that this action should be taken in keeping; with the spirit of this organization whose char ity and aid to the sick and unfortu nate has often been felt. This is a most commendable movement on the part of the ladies and one that v.iil do a great deal toward helping; the Red Cross. For Sale Span of mules, 4 years old, weighing 2,200 pounds; well broke and worked all last year. Mark White. 5-KMt wkly J. W. Brenclel, assessor of Avoca precinct, and Rudolph Bergmann, as sessor of Center precinct, were in the city yesterday and gave their returns in to County Assessor George L. Far ley and completed their labors for the year. mm BY DOES SOME HEAVY MOVING. The firm of J. II. McMaken & Sons have just completed another big job in the way of house moving;, being; eng;ag;ed at the farm of Glenn Perry, south of the city, where they moved the old residence of Mr. Perry to the site of the house that was burned a few weeks ag;o. Mr. Perry has moved into his new palatial country home and the house formerly occupied by the family will be turned over to families employed on the farm. Mr. McMaken and his force carried out the job in first class shape and had the house moved in record time. SENIOR CLASS OF HIGH SCHOOL GIVES AREWELL PARTY I-'rom Saturday's Paily. The last social event marking; the passing; of the cla.-s of 11)17 of the Plattsmouth high school was held last evening; at the home of Superintend ent and Mrs. W. G. Brooks and was the farewell grathering; of the class as a whole. It has been planned to ! hold this gathering; at the home of Miss Helen Living'ston south of ihe city, but the heavy rain and the threatening; looks of a repetition of the storm caused a hurried shift to be made in the plans of the youiv; people and the home of the superin tendent being; secured for the event the members of the class to the num ber of twenty-eiffht jratheied there to spend the evening;. The evening; was spent most enjoyably in a strictly in formal manner in frames and mu !c in which a most pleasant time was en joyed by everyone in the party, which will long; be remembered as the last gathering; of the young; men ar.d women ere the class should disband and the members take up their differ ent walks in life. At a suitable hour dainty refreshments were served which served to heighten the pleas ures cf the members of the jolly party and it was a late hour when they all departed homeward feeling; that while they were parting; forever as classmate?, that they had a very delightful time -nvath th hospitable roof of Mr. and Mrs. Brooks. SOME VERY ARTISTIC PICTURES BEIHG SHOWN A most unique and attractive ex hibition of photographic work is to be seen in the east display window at ihe drug- store of Weyrich fc Iladraba, where Mr. E. J. Weyrich has placed a larg;e number of views of outdoor life which were taken last summer at Estes Park, Colo. The snapshots were mostly taken with the small pocket kodak with a number of the graflex pictures. Mr. Weyrich has enlarged a number of the pocket kodak pictures into large sized pictures and these are objects of the greatest beauty, showing the snow clad mountain sum mits of the Rockies, ns well as the beautiful waterfalls and mountain streams which abound in that section of the state. It is a collection that anyone should be proud of and the work is cf.a finished nature that shows the possibilities of photographic aitisticness with a kodak.
