The Burlington today started a new through express service from Chicago to Lincoln and return on special trains Nos. 29 and 30, which was made neces sary by the large amount of business between these two points. The new trains are all express cars and, going west, come through this city at 10:18 a. m., and returning east, at 7:35 p. m. The volume of the express business over the Burlington has grown so great that the regular service is not able to handle the shipments, and these two additional trains will care I for the business from the two points. Washington, Oct. 29. While ship ments of all classes of freight are pil ing up in most of the important pro ducing centers of the country, and shippers calling frantically for relief, the Interstate Commerce commission has begun an inquiry into the situa tion. The task is complicated by the fact that the railroads blame the ship pers themselves for a large part of the difficulty. Railroads in all parts of the country were called on Saturday by the com mission for complete details of condi tions on their lines. Southern shippers and carriers wil be heard next Friday and Saturday in Louisville, Ky., by representatives of the commission. The shippers have declared the roads culpable in con ducting a large movement of freight to the seaboard for export, when water transportation is limited, and then permitting their cars to be used for storage purposes, while awaiting vessels. Passing the blame back to the ship pers, the railroads, say their impati ence to "catch the market" before present high prices break, has resulted in an unusually large movement, es pecially in grain, at an unseasonal time of year. Crops, it is explained, have been shoved into the market much earlier than ever before and the arilroads have been caught unprepared. Dr. .1. F. lirendel of Murray was in the city today for a few hours looking after some matters , of business and railing on his friends. ADVENT OF FINE BOY. Last night the home of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Ringer in this city was made happy by the arrival there of a fine new son and heir and the occa sion has been a most happy one to the delighted parents. The mother and little son are both progressing nicely and the friends are extending their heartiest congratulations. a: 1 1 p 4' :"" IK 4, "X" i Jf II f ' ' ii ii PHI UNITED STATES SENATOR GILBERT EVa. HIKERS HAVE BIG TIME AT PATTERSON HOME III MURRAY The "Hikers" club on Saturday en joyed a most delightful time at the beautiful home of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Patterson in Union, and the ladies from this city who journeyed down for the delightful occasion felt amply repaid for their trip in the royal hos pitality afforded them. The time was spent most delightfully at cards and the hours passed very rapidly in the facinations of bridge. A very dainty four-course luncheon was served at an appropriate hour, that added very much to the pleasures of the day. The ladies enjoyed several hours that they had not really expected to at the Pat terson home, due to the lateness of their train, and this allowed them to visit with their friends until evening and was much enjoyed. Those who were in attendance at the pleasant event were: Mesdames John W. Chap man, R. C. Rawls, Nelson Jean, George O. Dovey, Lynn Minor, Misses Margaret Donelan, lone Dovey and Vesta Douglass. RETURNS ESCAPED INMATE OF FEEBLE MINDED INSTITUTE A GOOD RECORD Oil CORN SHUCKING FOR CASS COUNTY BOX SOCIAL AT THE KENOSHIA SCHOOL From Saturday's Danv. One of the best records in the corn shucking line this year that has come to our attention was made yesterday atvthe farm of R. W. Long, near My nard, and Ben Land is the gentleman who did the work. Mr. Land started in yesterday morning, and in five hours shucked seventy-eight bushels which was going some, and in the aft ernoon up to 4 o'clock, the young man shucked forty-three bushels more making a total of 121 bushels for the day's work. This is a fine record and there are few in the county who can beat it, and we would be glad to hear from others of the fast corn shuckers as to their work in the fields. THE K. S. TURNER GIRLS HAVE PLEASANT EVENT E. L. Cook, steward of the institute for the feeble minded at Glenwood was in the city last evening to look for one of the inmates from the in stitution who had escaped from that place Saturday. He discovered the young man, named Bailey, had been taken up by the police Saturday eve ning when he was wandering around on the streets and was kept at the jail for safe keeping until this morn- ng when Mr. Cook took him back to Glenwood. The young man was per fectly willing to return to the" insti tution from which he had made his getawfiv, having apparently enjoyed his outing sufficiently. HON. JOHN MATTES HONORED. For some time there has been an effort made to regulate the introduc tion of bills in the legislature and to see that unnecessary bills were not offered, simply for the purpose of one fathering the bill, getting a lixtle cheap notoriety. This matter has been discussed for seme time, but no defi nite action taken Governor Morehead has taken the matter in charge ind appointed committees to meet and agree upon certain rules and regula tions concerning the introduction of bills in the legislature. The object is to secure a concrete and harmonious statute that will have a bearing upon future legislation. Hon. John Mattes has been appointed as one of the com mittee r apresonting the senate. IS AIDING VILLA Mexico City, Oct. 20. "Villistas are active in the state of Chihuahua be cause thev have secured in the United States facilities for aiding and fomenting the movement," Carranza charged in a statement issued here tonight. The first chief charges also that several newspapers in the United States have waged a campaign against Mexico. "They have given publicity to false reports and described the situation as very grave, inese papers asserieu that recently rebel forces have won ictories over the constitutionalist forces in the states of Colima, Mexo, Oaxaca and Chiapass. These reports are absolutely false. "Constitutionalist forces lately de feated forces of Felix Diaz, who fled out of Chiapass and took refuge in Guatamala. Xapata forces have been made to withdraw to the mountains of Morelos and all cities and communities are under complete control of the government. "The only movement showing signs of activity are the Villistas in the state of Chihuahua. This activity is due to the fact that the enemies of the constitutionalist government have secured in the United States facilities for aiding and fomenting the move ment. However, the government con tinues work in suppressing this up rising." Carranza denied the rumor that there is significance in the fact that his family is now in the United States, declaring they would return to Mexico City in a few days. He denied also re ports of famine in Mexico. "There is no lack of food of any kind throughout Mexico," he said. Fancy stationery in different van ities at the Journal office.
