EPISCOPALS FiSAY
PRAY FOR NATION
Lower House Votes to Eliminate Spe
cial President's Prayer From.
Book.
St. Louis, Mo., Oct. 18. The lower
house of the general convention of
the Episcopal church has voted to
eliminate from the prayer book, the
special prayer for the president of the
United States and to substitute a
prayer for the safety of the nation.
The proposed new prayer for the
nation, requests that "the president
and all others in authority" be given
"the wisdom and strength to know
and to do thy will." This new prayer
makes no reference to long life,
health, prosperity or eternal felicity
Before this change can become ef
fective, it must be adopted by the
ral convention. three years
hence.
The question of missions was un
der discussion today.
There is a possibility of a debate
on the question of unction. The so
called "Catholic wing" of the confer
ence is expected to bring the question
before the house, if further action is
taken on the revision of prayers.
The proposed changes in the ten
commandment, which will probably
be brought up for debate today or to
morrow, are as follows:
1. No change from present.
2. Thou shalt not make unto thy
self any graven image nor the like
ness of anything that is in heaven
above or in the earth beneath or in
the water under the earth; thou
shall not bow down to them nor wor
ship them.
C. Thou shak not take the name of
the Lord thy God in vain.
4. Remember that thou keep holy
the Sabbath day.
5. Honor thy father and thy
mother.
0. No change from the present.
7. No change.
8. No change.
V. Thou shalt not bear false wit
ness. 10. Thou shalt not covet anything
that is thy neighbor's.
An effort made Tuesday to kill in a
committee, the resolution admitting
women to membership in the house
of d?pu;ie-cj failed. The resolution
will now come up for discussion on
the floor of the house.
OR. GLADDEN, YEARS
IN G. 0, P, FOR WILSON
Columbus (.).. Oct. IS. Dr. Wash
ington Gladden, famous clergyman
and author, who lias voted for every
republican president elected, will this
vear vote for President Wilson.
"My first vote for president was
cast for Abraham Lincoln in 1860,"
says Dr. Gladden, "In 1912. I voted
for Roosevelt with the progressives.
"It seems to me that the ideas and
principles of progressive democracy'
are better represented today by the
democratic party and its leaders than
by the republican party and leaders.
"I rejoiced to see Hughes elevated
to a seat upon the supreme bench.
"No man, in my judgment, can ever
leave that eminence for party leader
ship without stepping down.
"I have greatly admired directness,
tact, persistence, and courage by
which Wilson has led his party" for
ward to large legislative achieve
ments. I
"It was inevitable that the most
wanton attacks would be made upon
the president; at a time when the na
tion ought to be standing firmly to
gether all the resources of party poli
tics are drawn upon to discredit our
national leader.
"I wonder if a debate, led by emi
nent men, in which such a record as
Wilson has made for the past three
years-and a half, can be reviewed by
his opponents without a generous or
appreciative word, is really good poli
tics."
