The Government takes the value of all the lands in a state, the high-priced land and the low-priced land, and then strikes an average. On Page 36 of the "Monthly Crop Report" for April, 1916, published by authority of the Secretary of Agriculture, is found a comparison of the average value per acre of land with improvements, as follows: NEBRASKA Average value per acre, $76 K A N S A S Average value per acre, $58 The IJ. S. Government states officially that the average value per acre of land with improvements is $18.00 per acre less in Kansas than in Nebraska. On a quarter section this amounts to $2,880.00. The soil of Kansas in every way is equal to that of Nebraska. Climatic conditions are the same. THEN WHY THIS DIFFERENCE IN FAVOR OF NEBRASKA?. THE ANSWER IS SIMPLY THIS: PRO HIBITION! Fornoff of near Cullom was in the city yesterday for a few hours visiting and attending to some trad ing with the merchants. Adam Meisinger of near Cedar Creek was in the city today for a few hours looking after a few matters of business with the merchants. Fred Gardner drove in from his farm home Wednesday to attend to some important business matters, and was a pleasant caller at this office. W. W. Hamilton, the Murray con tractor, was in the city for a few hours today visiting with his friends and looking after a few business mat ters. Attorney C. A. Rawls, H. A. Schneider and D. C. Meisinger, wife and children were among those going to Omaha this morning, where they will spend a few hours with friends and rela tives and enjoy a short outing. Julius Bock of New Castle, Wyo., who has been visiting in this county with his relatives and friends, de parted this morning for Omaha, from where he will go to his home in the west. John B. Kaffenberger returned yes terday from Chase county, Nebraska, where he has been enjoying a short visit wfth Mr. and Mrs. Ed Baumgart and family. The trip was made by auto and was one very much enjoyed. Mrs. Dora Briatch of Chicago, who is en route home from California, where she has been visiting for some time, stopped off today to visit with a few of her old friends of years gone by when the Briatch family resided here. Mrs. A. W. Smith who has been at Boulder, Colo., for some time enjoying a visit at the home of her daughter, Mrs. C. C. Boruff and family, returned home this morning and was accompa nied by Mr. and Mrs. Boruff and three children who will enjoy a visit in this city as well as at Carson, la., with their relatives and friends. Meisinger, wife and family, motored down from Lincoln this morn ing. George Smith and daughter of near Rock Bluffs were among those visiting in the city today. William Puis came up this morning from his home in Murray to spend a few hours with friends in this city. Charles Reihart of Louisville was among those visitfng in the city yes terday afternoon, attending to a few business matters. Ed E. Leach of near Murray was in the city for a few hours today, driv ing up to look after some trading with the merchants. C. L. Creamer and family from south of the city were here today for a few hours attending to some trad ing with the merchants. John Kreager of near Mynard was in the city today looking after some trading and visiting with the many- old friends for a few hours. Dr. B. F. Brenel of Murray was in the city for a few hours today en route to Omaha where he will visit at the hospital with several friends. Dr. E. D. Cummins of Lincoln was in the city for a short time today at tending to a few professional mat ters and visiting with his relatives. W. B. Porter, the Mynard stockman, was among those going to Omaha this morning to' spend the day looking after a few matters of business in that city. Mrs. Henry Spangler and daughter, Miss Elizabeth, departed this morning for Lincoln, where they will enjoy a visit of several days with relatives and friends. Mrs. Jacob Miller and son of Manley were in the" city yesterday for a short visit at the court house looking after some matters inregard to the estate of Mr. Miller, deceased. The great battle on the Somme front, in Fiance, says today's official statement, is again in full swing. Anglo-French attacks last night near Courcelette, Rancourt and Bouchavesnes are said to have failed In numerous air battles, the statement adds, German pilots shot down twen ty-four entente aeroplanes, the Ger mans losing six. . British Advance. London, Sept. 24 (2:47 p. m.). "South of the Ancre Brook," says the official statement today, "there was considerable military activity on both sides. East of Neuville St. Vaast, th enemv trenches were entered and prisoners taken." l- Germans Repulsed. Paris, Sept. 24. German troops this morning attacked French pos tions on the farm of L'Ahbe Wood north of the Somme, but were re pulsed, says the official statement, is sued this afternoon. In aerial encounters, twenty-six German machines were forced to de scend, the statement adds, many of them being destroyed. Teutons Taken Prisoner. Petrograd, Sept. 23. Russian and Austro-Germans are engaged in stub born battles at various places on the front, from the Pripet marshes to the Rumanian frontier, according to the official statement today. Fifteen hun died Austro-Germans were taken pris oner in the fighting yesterday on the upper Zereth river. Strong Russian Attacks. Berlin, Sept. 24 (By Wireless to Sayville). Strong Russian forces made repeated attacks yesterday on Austro-German positions north of Zboroff, in Galicia, says the official statement today. Russians penetrated German lines near Manaov, but were driven out by a counter-attack, leav ing more than 700 prisoners. Advance on Struma. London, Sept. 24. A british official communication from Saloniki, issued tonight, says: "On the Struma front, having crossed the river at three places, our troops occupied Jenumita, driving the Kara Dzkovbala, where ther met with strong opposition. Our artillery en tirely dispersed a counter-attack from Navel-Jen. "East of Nemhori, naval and field artillery successfully bombarded en emy trenches. "On the Dorian front our patrols have shown great activity, but most has hindered the artillery work." ANDREW F.
