There Mas considerable excitement
out on the Louisville road west of this
city, yesterday afternoon, when
party of travelers in a prairie schoon
er became involved with a number of
automobile tourists. County Attorney
A. G. Cole was called by Telephone
to the scene of action, and in company
with Chief of Police Barclay motored
out to where the trouble was reported,
near the Propst farm. On the arrival
of the authorities a striking scene
was presented to them. A delapadated
covered wagon drawn by two cows
was standing along side the roadway,
and attached to the wagon was a rick
t-tv old trailer which had evidently
seen far better days. In charge of
the outfit was an aged lady and her
son, who also was quite well along in
years, and they gave the story of the
trouble in their own peculiar way. It
seems the covered wagon and its oc
cupants, who gave their home as Sen
eca, Kan., had arrived in this locality
yesterday morning and stopped for the
day near the Propst place. A number
of persons came along in the after
noon in automobiles and attempted to
take a few snapshots of the wagon
and its unusual motive power. This
was objected to quite strongly by the
woman and her son and they h -u
gotten out their artillery, a rusty o"d
gun, at one time to drive off the
photographers, and had succeeded in
throwing a scare into a number of
the party.
On the arrival of the county attor
ney and the chief they proceeded to
tell them that they had permission
from Governor Morehead to travel
through the state, and furthermore, if
they were annoyed further by partios
desiring to take pictures of their out
fit, they intended to take the matter
up with President Wilson, who. from
their story, they were certainly strong
with. The lady informe 1 the county
attorney that the president would
protect them at all costs and have a
United States marshal to see that
they were not bothered, and as they
had such assurance as this it was
clear that they must be all right. The
affair was really amusing as the
story was told in real earnest, and the
two travelers certainly did not pro
pose to slop to deal with any of the
local officials, but were going right
to the chief executive of the nation.
The travelers came on toward this
city after their interview with the
county attorney, and camped fnr the
night near the residence of L'.'ke
Wiles, and departed this morning for
Omaha. The two cows that were pull
ing the wagon and its trailer were
well broke and did as good service
as horses as far as getting along, and
reminded one of the stories of early
pioneer days in this portion cf the
