John C. Watson, well known law
yer and politician and former speaker
of the Nebraska house of represent
atives, died here at 5 o'clock this eve
ning. He was C5 years old. He had
been ill for the past three months, an
attack of grippe having turned into
heart trouble.
Mr. Watson "-was born at Memphis,
Tenn., September 23, 1859. He was
graduated from the law college of the
University of Michigan in 1861) and
came to Nebraska City in May, 1873.
In the early days he served several
times as district attorney. Later he
went to the state legislature, where
he served as speaker of the house in
1889 and later as president pro tern
of the senate. He was a republican
in politics. He was known as one of
the best criminal lawyers in this part
of the state and durinir his long prac
tice here he was interested in many
big suits. For years he took an active
interest in charity work and public
institutions of all kinds.
He leaves a - wife, one son, John
Watson, a graduate of the University
of Nebraska and now living near
Union) Neb.; two sisters, Mrs. S. L.
Dixon of Washington, D. C, and Mrs.
Millie Kensinger of St. Louis, Mo.,
and one cousin, Dr. Claude Watson of
this city.
John C. Watson wa3 almost as well
known in Cass county as in his own
home county and was for years one
of the commanding figures in the re
publican politics of these two counties,
and his keen intellect and splendid
understanding of the law made him
one of the. leaders of the legal profes
sion in the state. It is with regret
that his friends, and former associates
in this county learn of his death.

day afternoon at the home of Mrs
Jennings Seivers, fourteen ladies be
ing present. The devotional exercises
were led by Mrs. Copenhaver, and
after a short business session, a very
interesting lesson on "A Nation at
School (China)" was conducted by
Miss Elizabeth Spencer of Beemer,
Neb. This was followed by a solo by
Miss Florence Balser. Light refresh
ments were Served by the hostess and
a few minutes of social conversation
brought the afternoon to a close.
