HALL A GRAND SUCCESS The ice cream social and dance given by the ladies of St. Agnes So dality at the K. S. hall yesterday aft ernoon and evening was a most enjoy able event for those who were in at tendance and was very much enjoyed by everyone, and as a result the ladies realized a neat sum. The Bohemian brass band furnished the music in their usual pleasing manner, and this organization also played at the dance Saturday evening at thi3 hall, which was given for the benefit of the band boys. Worsham and parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Rotter, have de parted for Hot Springs, Wyo., where they will spend a month at a Fanitarium. Mr. and Mrs. Rotter have not been in the best of health for the past four months, both suffering from lheumatism, and they will spend the month at the sanitarium in the hopes of regaining their health. FRANCIS REZENER SUFFERING FROM BLOOD P0SI0IIIII6 Francis Rezener of Kirkwkood, Il linois, who is here with his mother for a visit at the home of Mr. and Mr3. G. H. Tarns, is suffering from quite a severe case of blood poisoning which he contracted a short time ago while at Alliance, Neb., on a visit at the home of his brother, Fred Rezener. The young man was working in the garden and in some way his right hand became infected and he will re main here for a time until it can be cured up, as he was brought here from Alliance to receive treatment. CASTOR I A For Infants and Children In Use For Over 30 Years Always bears the Signature of J. W. Hall, who gave his residence as Hastings, Iowa, became tangled with the double effects of Nebraska liquor and Nebraska law yesterday morning and for several hours oc cupied a cell at the city jail until it was time to ship him back to his home to rest up from the effects of his expedition. The man had secured a room at the Perkins House Saturday night and all was peaceful until about 4:45 yesterday morning, when he arose from his couch and raised sev eral varigated brands of noise at the hotel that wakened everyone. He claimed he was unable to open the door of his room, and when this had finally been unlocked ho spent soni time in giving a short ion service, and the strains of "Dublin Bay," and "Wrap Me With a Bundle" assailed the ears of the residents of the hotel until he was ejected onto the street. He then, came up Main street, but was unlucky in that he ran into OTicer Grebe at the corner of Fourth street and was escorted to the Ji-.il. He was , wen provisioned ior a long f.eige, nz I he had on his person a pint of whisky and a pint of gin, wnic-h combination probably accounted for his exv.beranco of spirits. We lather think the council ought to raise that street peddler license. One dollar a day does not pay for the money they take away, and many of them are nuisances anyway. Julius Pepperburg has a brother, only 1G years old, who has lately come from over the water and is going to stay with us. He can hardly much Engles' sprachen yet, but will soon learn that and is a bright, earnest looking lad. Mr. Morrison's boat has a handsome cabin and pilot house on her now and they expect to move her out in the stream as seen as Wayman gets the new boiler in. Where they may go is uncertain, but the boys are bound to have a ride in the new boat somewhere. W. D. HINER, BROTHER OF JESSE HINER DIES IN SOUTH DAKOTA The friends of Prof. Simons got up a very haivlscme little reception for him at the Saunders House on the eve of his departure for the college at Nebraska City. During the evening a very fine gold ring, properly inscribed, was presented to the gentleman. The Rev. Mr. Burgess made the presenta tion speech, and very neatly, too. He was followed by others in expressing their good wishes for Mr. Simons' welfare and success in his new field of lubor. The situation he will find at Nebraska City is a very good one, the college is handsomely situated, the grounds are very fine and the engage ment altogether a very desirable one. Jesse Hiner of this city has just re- ceivedwprd cf the death of his broth er, Ji Hiner, which occurred at Wagner S. D., on July 13th, after a long illness from stomach trouble. Mr. Hiner was about 53 years of age and was born in Marion county, Iowa, where he resided until about twenty years ago, when he came to Mills county, living near Glenwood and Pa cific Junction for some twelve years and then moving to his late home at Wagner, where he died. He leaves a wife and five children. The funeral was held at Wagner on the 15th of July and the body laid at rest in the vault .which Mr. Hiner had prepared in the last few years to receive him, as he was aware that his affliction was destined to be fatal and that his days were numbered. He has in the last few years visited here several times and is well known to many of our citizens. SUPERINTENDENT BROOKS RETURNS FROM NEW YORK Superintendent W. G. Brooks of the city schools returned home Saturday from New York City, where he has been spending several weeks at the Columbian university summer school finishing up his special course for superintendents and principals, and has received his diploma for the four year course. Mr. Brooks has in the past few years denied himself the rest of the summer vacations in order to complete this course, which is so im portant to his chosen calling of the educational line, and feels wel Irepaid in receiving his reward for his labors. The Columbian university is one of the leading educational institutions of the east and its graduates have be come prominent in the life of the na tion and a diploma from the college is a trophy well worth having. Superintendent Brooks, with his work in the eastern schools, will be able to bring to the city schools here the ad vantage of his higher education that will beo f great benefit to the youth of the High school here. JOHN TOMAN, SR., IS SER IOUSLY ILL AT HIS HOME John Toman, sr., one of the aged residents of the west part of the city, is lying very seriously ill at his home following an operation which he un derwent a few days ago at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John Hiber. Mr. Toman is past 83 years of age and has been in poor health for the past few years, and with his extreme old age it makes recovery doubtful, despite the splendid care and aid afforded him by his family and physicians. His illness will be deeply regretted by his many old friends and it is to be hoped he will be able to recover and be with his family for several years yet. South Bend Notes Your cor respondent stepped off the train at South Bond this morning and was greatly surprised to see the changes that have been made in the past few months. We find the '"Dill Hall" with two store rooms below, almost com pleted. Ore room will soon be oc cupied by C. H. Pinkham and will contain the largest stock of groceries, dry goods, hats and caps, boots and shoes, etc., ever brought to this city. Our old friend "Am." Lazenby, will move his stock of drugs across the street into the room adjoining Pink ham's. The new store just put up by J. G. Romine is partly filled with a stock of drugs, and is "run" by McFarland & Decker. They will soon have a new stock of groceries to fill the one side of the store that is yet vacant. H. J. Streight is too busy to stop for his meals, taking in grain, hogs and potatoes, having about 500 bush els of the latter in his cellar. He has a large stock of new goods of every description and was ordering more today from two or three "bummers" that were here. He has his new ware house painted, and has filled and emptied it "severial" times in the last month or two. Ed McGennis, the wood butcher of the city, is kept busy about all the time, mostly shop work. Romine has so far recovered from his broken leg as to be abel to get around without his crutch. orains ot every Kind are coming into market lively, notwithstanding the present low prices. The merchants are cribbing corn and paying 10 cents per bushel. Potatoes are bringing 20 cents in trade. The want of a bridge across the Platte is the only thing that prevents South Bend from becoming one of the first cities of Cass county. Remnants Sale.... Cut the Weeds. Car! 1908 PRICE No car today gives as much real value for the money as the Overland. You can satisfy yourself on this subject by comparing specifications with competitive cars. UP-KEEP No car was ever built that did not at some time or other need some repair. Repairs for the Overland can be obtained the same day as ordered, and at prices far below what other manu facturers charge. This fact does not occur to the average buyer until he needs some parts and finds it takes from one to three weeks to get parts and in many cases at prices two and three times what the Over land asks. Automobile factories have declined in numbers from 270 in 191 1 to 119 in 1915. In other words 151 factories out of 270 have quit making cars in the last four years, and well informed men in the automobile business predict that the change in the next two years will be still more startling, which means that it will be still more difficult and still more delay on parts for cars that are not being man ufactured at that time. There is only one manufacturing plant in the world that produces more cars than the Overland Company, which has increased its pro duction from 400 cars in 1 908 to over 1 00,000 cars per year now. If the Overland car had not given far better average satisfaction to the buyer in the past it would not have outstripped all its competitors, many of .which were in the automobile field twice as long. o 4
