"You may have a chance with a highwayman who takes your watch." declared the assistant district attor-i.-v. -because you may be able to bit him on the bead, but when a mm t fines to you with a smile on his f:ve. and a silk hat on his head and sav I tin worth a Million when he has lf- a n.illicn you have r.o chance against l.im.- That the pn -sedition is staking- its all. so far as Sieuel is concerned, on ihi-s trial was announc ed in the o' n irg address. THEY TAKE TOWN OF DIXUUDE Battle Has Seldom if Ever Been Equaled In History of Warfare For Its Ferocity and Losses Are Heavy. French Army Growing Daily. WAft SUMMARY HUNDREDTH DAY OF WAR Blocdy Hand-to-Hand Battle Continues In West Flanders. Ijp.ndon. Nov. 12. According o P.ritish experts the hundredth day of the war. which encages virtually Ivif the world, finds the Teutonic al'ies practically on the defensive, at !eat temporarily, in both the main areas of Lostiiit ies. This roie is, perhaps, more pro r.ounied in the eastern field of oper ation, wliere the Germans have ben thrown well lack behind their own frontier lines at several points in Fast Prussia and Posen. than in the west- rn field, where, although the suc cesses of the last two weeks have e n shied the forces of Great IJr'tain, France and Relcium to inaugurate a vigorous offensive, the Germans a"e stiil disputing every foot of ground with bloody hand to-hand fighting, which Is proving more deadly than his any previous phase of this most san guinary war. The names of soitio towns and villages occurring with m netonous regularity day after day it; the official reports, show how- stubborn las been the struggle in the country centering around Ypres. In this land the opposing armies have burrowed until it has become a veritable human rabbit warren. The report of renewed tentative? for peace made to the czar by Ger many, which, however, has not been confirmed, with the purpose of detaeh inc Russia from the other allies, as Get many is believed previously to have tried to detach France, is accent ed in London as an indication that Germany i3 becoming aware of the difficulties of the task it has under taken in prosecuting an offensive war fire against foes cn two fronts, and the supposed failure of these' over funs, if any have actua'ly been made, is coupled with the continual move rient to the cast of German troops front Belgium. The Germans report good progress around Ypres, the taking of C'x mude with 500 prisoners, the cap ture of the first line of the allied po sition west of Langemarck with 2, 000 prisoners, the repulse of fierce counter attacks by the British, and the holding of the heights to the north of Armentieres and a further advance to the southwest of til!e. comparison, the French official In EAGLE HOLDS BABY IN CLAWS Mother Screams and Giant Bird Drops Child to the Ground. Jo'-iet. 111.. Nov. 12 Delmer Reeves, the two year old son of David R e ve.s, was playing in the back yard of the Reeves home in Will county. His mot ht r h'-ard the child scream and rushed to the door in time to see an enormous eagle clutch the baity by his dress and lift him from the ground. The mother screamed and the eagle dropped the child after the baby had been carried a few feet. The eng'e's talons badly lacerated the child's flesh. Innes and Wife Will Be Dismissed. San Antonio, Tex., Nov. 12. The charges cf murder against Victor In nes and his wife for the alleged deaths of Miss Beatrice Nelms and .Mrs. Klois Nelms Dennis, sisters, of Atlanta, will Le dismissed .Monday, District Attor ney Linden announced in court. He said the state had been unable to es tablish the fact of the Nelms sisters' death and therefore would not under take trial. MINORS TO HAVE SAY Will Nave Word In Any Peace Pact In Baseball Salary Limit Fixed. Omaha, Nov. 12. "No matter wlsit action we may take with regard to tha Federal l-:gue and peace with thai organization, that action must be np proved by all organized tall, not only by the major leagues, but the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues, from the biggest minors down to the smallest class D club.' That was the parting word of Garry Henmann, chairman of the national commission, to the minor league con vention, just before he departed for Chicago. The question of salary limit, which had been ;occ:ypying the Western leaguers time for the most part, was practically settled by the national as sociation. It was agreed that the maximum paltry limit for the Western should Le 2 SCO. That means that the players" salaries mu.-t come undei f S00 cer rear. Cne half of the man ater's salary i? to be included in limit. that staterr.ent is meager. It confires itself to the mere announcement that the Germans have continued their efforts without achieving any new results. Premier Asquith, in his speech at the opening cf parliament, declared that he doubted wnether wr wolcJ Ijst as long as had been originally pre dieted, but that it would last long was certain. In East Prussia, Poland and Gai'cia the Russians, apparently, are mak ing progress. Vienna admits that the Austrian trc-cps have evacuated central Galicia, although, it is ex plained, that this movement has been a voluntary ore. The Auslri ans, however, claim favorable re sults in the engagements between Ncv. 6 and Nov. 10, when they cap tured 4.3C0 Russians and many guns. London. Nov. 12. The Germans have resumed their attack on the allie 1 line between the coast and the l.ys river, and while the French claim n erally to have held th ir position's. the Germans have succeeded in cap turing the town of Dixn.ude, which has been the center ot" some of tie fiercest and most sanguinary figiiling of th- war. The country between Dixmude and Ypres. where the belligerents hac been engaged iu violent attacks and counter attacks for weeks past, ana where the losses have been luavvt even than those in the battle of 'i.e. Yeer. is again the scene of a bttt'e which for fury has seldom if ever been equaled. Behind Dixmude is the direct rotd to Dunkirk, one of the French ports on which the Germans have set their hearts, and if they can break through here the allies will be compelled to fall back to new positions. Tne 1V vaders have therefore ben concen trating their forces at this point. Successses For Allies. At other points along the bat'le front in France th.- French ofTifinl communication claims some successes for the allies, but the German heml cnia iters' staff declares that all attacks have been repulsed. It is considered quite certain that with the enormous forces required for the effort to get through to the const and to protect their own country from Russian invasion the Germans will not be able to throw any adJitior.il troops into the lines which strefh through not tb rn France and alorg the Franc o German border. .On the other hand, the French, whose army is growing daily, might attempt an offensive against Lorraine cr Alsace as a diversion which would relieve the pressure in the west. Suffer Cefeat In East. The Germans, accotding to Petro grad dispatches, have suffered a more serious defeat on the I-iast Prussian bolder than the offu ial statements have disclosed. Advices from the Rus sian capita! state that in the recent fighting there the Russians have cap tured more than 2'.u0 prisoners, ii gcther with guns and munitions. The Russian advance in Poland, which has been at the rate of fourteen miles daily, has astonished the mili tary expe rts and it is not surprising to hear that they are picking up miny footsore and weary German straegir!. This advance of horse, foot and artil lery has continued lor eighteen days. In Ga'icia the Russians continue to push the Austrians back, but tiie Aus trians are having their revenge along he Servian bolder, which they threat n to cross in an endeavor to crush Servia before Russia can come to i's assistance. Of the fighting between Turkey and the allies the reports are so contra dictory that there is no reconciling them. Turkey re ports vic tories against Russia ard Great Britain, which those two countries deny. British Gunb03t Torpedoed. London, Nov. 12. The p.ritish tor pedo gunboat Niger has been tor pedoed by a submarine in the Downs, according to an official announcement. The Niger foundered, but all the offi cers and crew were save d. Two men were injured. The Niger' carried a complement cf eighty-five men. Jap Tcrpsio Boat Sunk by Mine. Tokyo, Nov. 12. Official announce ment 13 made that torpedo boat No. 33 of the Japanese navy was sunk by a mine at the mouth of Kiauchau hay while dragging for mines. A majorifj of the crew was rescued.
