Last evening a number of the

play on the courts of the
I'latt-mioulh association, and
were loud in their praise of the
excellent manner in which the
grounds of the local club have
been lived -up. Those jn the party
were: Messrs. J. T. Srhwell, Olto
Si iineidcr, William Campbell.
Howard Kin and John Mallard.
Messrs. Sch well and Campbell
were particularly clever in their
playing and win from their op
ponents in fvcry' contest played.

event. A number of other parties
from the surrounding- counties,
including (). Kins and Mr. Reavis
of Falls City, will also be on hand
when the tournament opens, and
an unusually strong entry list
from this county will take part.
In the line of teiins news it may
be interest inp: to note thai Rev.
F. M. Druliner of this cilv this
afternoon plays at Norfolk in the
Xorlhcasleru Nebraska and South
Dakota tournament to defend the
trophy cup which he has held for

know that he has had some pame,
and the friends of Ihe penial niin-
ister are hopeful that he will re
turn home with the cup, which, if
he wins this year, will become his
personal property.
Liviupstoii Richey, also a mem
ber of the club in this city, is

comers in the Southeast Iowa
lournanicnf, now beinp- held at
Lake Manawa, and he bids fair to
be one of the chief contenders for
the cup offered as the prize for
the winner. This showing- by the
members of the club have stirred
up great enthusiasm in the city
and the year 191 i will he one of
the most successful ever seen
here in the linen f tennis enthusiasm.

CEASE AT ONCE
Not Particularly Necessary, but It
is an Annoyance to People and
Should Be Stopped.
Il has been quite noticeable of
late that a great, many of the
drivers of automobiles, while
running their cars on the street,
will almost invariably run with
the "cutout" on the muffler of
their engines open, making a
great deal more noise than is
necessary and furnishing an an
noyance to persons on the side
walks r in stores who ate trying
to carry on a conversation at the
lime the machines . pass them.
While the use of the cutout does
not in any way endanger Ihe lives
of anyone, at the same lime it is
ml necessary and is purely
opt binary w ith the driver of a car
whether j is used or not.
The cily has had an ordinance
for Mime time that provided
against this, and the drivers of
cars should be more careful in
using it when on Ihe streets of the
cily. On the more thickly settled
resident streets the cars going
past late at night wilh "cutouts"
open furnish the means of dis
turbing the slumbers of the
peaceful citizens, and in case
someone is sick the noise is very
nerve-racking to the palicnl.
The use of this device is whol
ly unnecessary, as the amount of
power I hal is developed by them
is so small that it adds practical
ly nothing (he running of the
automobile, ami wilh the "cutoll"
closed flie general public is saved
much annoyance. The motor
cycles are even greater ev ils I ban
the automobiles in this way. as
their noise is at times something
fierce and for blocks Ihe loud re
ports from open mufflers can be
In-ard. disturbing and annoying
all within the radius of two or
three blocks. These are small
matters and a little thought ful
ness on the part of the drivers of
the machines would make it far
more pleasant for the persons on
the sheets here.

Cut the Weeds.
Now is the proper time for all
farmers to mow the weeds along
their farms. The law provides
for i penally for failure so to do
between the Lrth of July and the
15th or August. While the law
has set the above date, now. is the
time to mow them, as the greatest
good can be accomplished at this
time. I would advise all the farm
ers along the highways of our dis
trict to get after them just as soon
as possible, while they can be cut
much easier. C F. Vallery,
