Notice is hereby riven that I. W. K. Fox treasurer of the county of Cass, in the state of Nebraska, will on the first Monday, being the 3rd day of Novem- ier, 1X13. aa required by law, com mence selling' at the office of the coun ty Treasurer of paid county in the city of I'lattsmouth. at public auc tion, so much of the following tracts of lands and town lots as shall be necessary- to pay the taxes, together with interests and costs that may have accrued thereon on that day, being the delinquent taxes lor the year 1912 ana prior years as appears from the tax lists of said vears. Said ale will be held between the hours of nine o'clock a, m. and four o'clock p. m. of said date, and continue from day to day between aid hours until all said property, upon which de linquent taxes temain unpaid, shall be sola or offered lor sale. Man Lloyd liner Grosser Kurfucrst, which eent the first rescue boat to re move passengers and crew from tho burning Eteamer Volturno, arrived, here with 105 survivors of the ill fated ship. From the lips of some of the Vol turno survivors there tame descrip tions which accentuated the heroic conduct of the Volturno's cartaln, offi cers and crew and of men w ho manned (he lifeboats that put forth from other ships. 1 he explosion of a drum containing chemicals was the cause of the fire, according to the story told by Wal dron Disselman, third officer of the VoltuniQ. Dls&elman gave a thrillins narrative oX the long hours ppent on the fire-ridden ship, fighting tho flames, repairing the crippled wireless plant, lowering lifeboats, quieting th panic-stricken, steering the vessel by hand to kcrp it from drifting wliib the waves were running too high for small craft from other ships to accom plish the journey to the Volturno's 3ide. More than eighty passengers were burned to death when they were cut off by flame, L'isselman reported. Ranking well up with the bravery displayed by Captain Inch of tho Vol turno were the feats of daring of sev eral of hi3 officers, among them Sec ond Officer Uoyd. While ten ocean liners maneuvered about the Volturno after darkness had settled on Thurs day, Captain Inch wirelessed: "We can't stand this long. Our boats are gone. Send boats." No rescue boats came in response to Inch's wireless. Then Second Officer Uoyd measured up to the mark. Taking four men with him, he entered a damaged lifeloat. the Volturno's last, and showed that it was possible to rido the seas. Engineer Leaps Into Sea. Third Engineer Pinsch was another hero, refusing to desert the flame threatened engine room until he re ceived orders from Captain Inch to do so. Then Pinsch donned his best uni form, pocketed his engineer's certif icate and five sovereigns and jumped overboard. He was rescued. Passengers told of some of the hor rors they say they witnessed. Some said they saw women burned to death; others said babies were trampled and killed. Several were quoted as de claring they saw the ship's officers keep back with revolvers panic-stricken seamen who had swarmed on deck nftor the explosions and tried to fore? their way into lifeboats ahead of wom en and children. It was denied on be half of the officers that revolvers had been used. FIFTY BODIES RECOVERED Hope of Saving More of Entombed Winers Virtually Abandoned. Cardiff, Wales, Oct. 16. All hope of rescuing more of the miners entombed In the Universal colliery has been vir tually abandoned. The report that a party of twenty-nine men had been found allvs in one of the galleries has proved erroneous, but a large number of bodies were encountered. No official reports have been issued and this has caused much comment. Fire broke out anew and is still rag ing. There are no further signs of lifo in the pit. Fifty bodies have been recovered, while 367 miners are still mi?sing. The engineers have decided lo de vote their efforts to subduTng the fire. as they believe it useless to persist in the attempt at rescue. Methodist Ministers Not Highly Paid.
