If we won 1?1 conquer the
mosquito as we are conquering
the fly we would prevent malaria
over a large section of this coun
try. That we can conquer the
pest, is certain if we go at the task
with intelligence and with the
co-operation with which we have
attacked the fly.
Drainage of low lands and the
disinfection of standing water are
the two great remedies. The
mosquito flies only a short dis
tance a few hundred yards in
fact from his birthplace. If
the breeding grounds are destroy.,
ed there can be no mosquitoes.
For the first, lime in the health
history of the country malaiia is
lo be recognized in a national
way when the third annual con
vention of I In? national drainage
congress lakes place in SI. Fouis
tins week. Al Ihis pal tiering a
tlaria congress" will be held.
Dr. W. A. Fvans, recently health
commissioner of Chicago, sug
gesled il, and immediately there
appeared indorsements of the idea
from all parts of the country.
At this congress, Dr. I . O.
Howard, chief of the bureau of
entomology of the United Stales
department of agriculture, a de
termined foe of the mosquito and
malaria, will be present. Dr.
Howard is the man who first drew
general attention to Ihe com
parative ease with which the pest
could be exterminated if only we
would unite for the task. As
drainage is the chief method of
disposing- of mosquifoes and
hence of malaria, if is peculiarly
appropriate that nuy discussion of
Ihe disease as a national problem
should be held at a lime when the
drainage question is being con
sidered in its full significanr e.
Already New Jersey and Cali
fornia have doro much along this
line, but that much remains to be
accomplished is certain from the
statistics as lo the prevalence of
malarial fevers published from
lime to time. In health matters
we are slowly coining lo realize
that an ounce of prevention is
worth a pound of cure. A na
tional campaign of education has
aroused us to the menace of the
fly; it is reasonable to suppose if
we fully realize the danger of the
mosquito we would unite lo ex
terminate it.
