A GREAT DEAL SAFER ON PASSENGER TRAINS "Did you ever stop to figure," asks M. II. Douglas, Union Pacific engineer, "that more people aro killetl in automobiles trying to cross ahead of trains than are killed while passengers on rail way trains? Last year the Union Pacific handled three and three quarter millions passengers and did not kill a single passenger. Yet these passengers were en dangered by people driving autos across railway tracks. Not only were the passengers endangered, lnil tin; enginemen who pulled t'.ie trains were placet! in greater danger. Think what it might mean to strike an automobile carrying from ten to fifty gallons of gasoline. Think also of the property loss that might be en lained. Some of the Union Pa cific oriental silk trains are worth a million dollars in the cargo they carry. An entire train might be luvncil. These considerations are apart from the danger and the loss of life to those in nutos. The hazard of railroading has been reduced !Mi per cent since I began railroitiling in 1870. In the early da on our ma (h,. ovcrniiient sent soldiers out to protect train men from the Indians, Thai ua a hazard thai (Iocs not exist now, but inventive genius has created new ones." Parents of children iu the rural districts are just as much in terested iu the education of their children as are parents residing in tlie towns and villages, and the best way to give them the neces sar educational advantages is now a grave question with those living in Cass county. The fol lowing from the Lincoln Trade Review hits the mark so well that we appropriate the same for the benefit of those interested in the consolidation of rural school dis tricts: The legislature of Iowa is giv ing serious consideration to the question of enlarging education for the children of that state through the consolidation of their rural schools and that which is good for owa in this regard, would be equally good for Ne braska, although in this slate the egislalurw does not seem to reach o these larger question in preference to a multitude of minor things represented by their over 1,300 bills that they have to consider. Statistics show that in Iowa and iu this stale, DO per cent of the children never go through the high school. It is doubtful if 90 per cent ever enter uio high school, and so what more live luestion could there be than to see what could he done to hotter the education of 90 per cent of the children of a slate? In Iowa plans are under discus sion that would ne lar-reacning both in the volume and variety of education thai children would be given and in the economical ad ministration of the schools of that slate. There are in Iowa number of townships where entralizod school system has been adopted and tried out and the result is that the schools of township centralized in one school, have conducted for half the money that was required when (lie township was divided into six or eight srliool districts. A central school greatly en- uges cducnlional opportunities oxer llii' present district scnoo ysteiii. In u central school there could be a half dozen teachers that would do specihc lines in their ditlerenl work, and the pupils of the township would be classified in classes under these list i lift instructors and manna ti lining, domestic science nnc ricullure and such lines of practical work could be and are developed iu township ' schools when it is impossible to develop Ihein in the little district school Judging from the reports that come ironi me legislature in Iowa, now iu session, that body will not adjourn until il lakes step far in advance looking to the onsolidaled country school. We wish that the legislature of this slate were as progressive in this line as Iowa. There are so many advantages iu this kind of school, not only those of educa turn as outlined and or economy as shown by experience, hut also in attendance, and all results show increased value. These township schools that have been developed in Iowa not only cover all the cost of maintaining the school building and the leaching force, hut they carry out a sys tematic plan of gathering from al parts of the township the children each morning and delivering them at home in the evening, and in stormy and bad weather, especial ly for the smaller children, this is un improvement of the greatest worth tending to regular and in creased attendance with all the advantages that come throug such channels.
