Sargeant Is Reappointed.
From Saturday' Dally.
Dispatches from Washington
convey the information that
President Taft has sent the name
of W. K. Sargeant to the senate
to be postmaster at Elniwood to
succeed himself. This appoint
ment is in line with the policy of
tlio administration to till the post
ollices with republicans befure the
Wilson administration comes in
to ollice on March i. These ap
pointments are quite likely to
strike a snag in the senate, where
a number of the democrats are
talking of holding up this class of
appointments.

It will soon be the lime of year
when the farmers cannot work in
the lields and come to town to loaf
during part of I he day, for the big
discussions to start in every vil
lage and hamlet, and in many of
a larger growth, concerning
"What our town needs," The
opinions advanced will be as
varied as (lie debaters are in num
bers,, and in few cases will it be
decided, we fear, whether a new
street inspector, a city library ami
town hall or a water works sys
tem will be (he most progressive
move. Kveryone lias a "town" in
which he is specially interested
so tins can apply to all.
It is not our purpose to attempt
to prescribe or dictate what any
town needs in the way of an in
dividual improvement lo make it
a better, more progressive city.
I erhaps it is a better lighting
system, perhaps a city library,
perhaps more attention lo the
streets, or maybe if is a High
school building or a town hall.
The people who make up the
cili.ensliip of any town ought lo
be the ones lo decide on these
matters.
Hut we do know something h;t,
every town needs, and which far
loo few of them have, ami that is
the spirit of progress and co
operation which will make every
person in (he city willing to put
a shoulder to the w heel and work
for those. things hieli w ill do the
town as a whole good.
We know of a few towns of this
sorl. some of them no) very large
either, which are making a name
for themselves that is worth more
Ihan they probably imagined when
I hey started their campaign for
city improvement. When there is
something needed or something
which will do the town good which
can be landed Dlacksniith Jones
and Storekeeper Drown ami Cob
bler Smith do not stop to ask if
they are going lo make a big
"rakeoff" by boosting for Hie
thing. They get in with Private
Citizen (ireen and Black and help
land the improvement, whatever
it i-. And the people from all
over the country point lo these
towns and remark. "They do
things down there. They have the
proper spirit." If your town
needs a boom lake our advice and
get that ..pint, and jou will get
the boi in as a natural consequence.
