Hon. John H. Morehead.
Lieutenant Governor John II.
.Morehead was in the city last
Thursday and Friday and made
the acquaintance of a large num
ber of our people. Mr. Morehead
is a candidate for governor. He
is one of these great big, open,
frank, free and gejierous men
who make you feel good to meet
and talk with. There is no bom
bast, nothing of the boss in his
make-up, but just a real gentle
man. He is one of the old settlers
of this stale, and has lived at
and near, Falls City for a third of
a century. No man can truthfully
utter one word against his char
acter or his life. He is not the
candidate of any factions, but. is
the candidate of the people, and
he expects the people to rule in
the nomination for governor and
he is going to abide by their ac
tions, lie has nolhing but the
fullest, confidence in the people.
He is their friend, and he believes!
that they are his friends. He will
be their friend if nominated and
elected which he will be. If he
receives the nomination
.Nolwillistanding the great
amount of caution and labor ex
erted by Manager T. It. Pollock to
avoid disaster from the unusual
accumulation of snow and ice
along the Platte river, last night
about 7 o'clock i spans of the
Duff-Pollock wagon bridge were
swept away by the huge cakes of
ice which the current carried
against the piling. Mr. Pollock
and a force of men have been
working at the ice and blasted it
away from the piers and had the
channel clear- about the bridge,
but a gorge was formed in a way
that was least expected and re
sulted in working havoc on the
wagon bridge.
The ice had broken loose from
the banks and channels of water
bad been running through it from
Cedar island this way most of the
day yesterday. An acre of ice in
one Mock would move down die
stream for some distance and
then break in great blocks, which
accumulated against the wooden
piers of the Burlington bridge at
the north end, throwing the cur
rent southeast through the
eighty-foot steel spans of the
Burlington bridge and piling the
ice against the steel spans of I ho
wagon bridge, which threw the
current north against the wooden
piles and the huge cakes of ice
surging against, them cut -them
off, ami four spans next adjacent
to the four steel spans at the
south end of the bridge went. out.
For a time the material lodged
in the ice gorge at the moulh of
the Platte, but was dually re
leased, a portion at a time, and
floated out into the Missouri, and
about nine o'clock this morning
the reflex current from the big
Hurlington bridge had brought
some of the material hack into
dead water at the mouth of the
sewer. Men were sent out in
boats to gather in the material as
fast as il floated down the
stream.
Three spans of the Louisville
wagon bridge was carried, away
yesterday afternoon during the
breaking up of a huge ice gorge.
A Childers, the Platte river lish
eruian, came down on No. S this
morning and brought the news
that the heavy swing of ice had
moved the Missouri Pacific bridge
live inches out of line.
The Duff-Pollock bridge had
not suffered further damage than
was wrought upon il last night.
Mr. Pollock does not think that
any further damage will be done,
unless the wooden piers of the
Burlington bridge gave way, in
which case the north end of the
wagon bridge will be unable to
bear the rush of ice and water
that would result.

A Good Law.
Sheriff Myers believes a law
should be passed that would
make it necessary for every man
who purchases a gun or revolver
to have a permit, from some com

record should be kepi of every
gun sold and of the purchaser.
In this way it, would be possible
