Washington, June 19. While the ceremonies attending the coronation of King George and Queen Mary thin week will be on a scale of far greater magnitude and magnificence than the silver wedding anniversary of Presi dent and Mrs. William H. Taft today, It will in no sense be a more sponta neous and heartfelt tribute of a great nation's affection for thowe who have been called to rule over Its destinies. The formal reception today Is one of the greatest social functions Wash ington has seen for many yeara. In vitations were sent to more than 4,000 people to be present at the reception. The White House Is decorated with June roses and clusters of flowers, and the entrance resembles a garden walk with flowering plants and palms. Through these the guests passed to the Kant room, where a program of music bv the United States Marino band was furnished. The reception lasted for several hours. The guests were received by the president and Miss Helen Taft, who has Just returned from visiting lier aunt, Mrs. Charles Anderson, In Cincinnati. Mrs. Taft was with the president, but did not receive the guests, as thlH would have Ix-en too revere a strain upon her. The White Iloiine tonight will be outlined with electric lights around the portico and terraces, and an elec tric banner showing the dates, "1886 and 1911," will show on the lawn, whllo a massive electric flag will wave from the south portico. Spotlights playing on tho fountain will be anotlv tir feature of the spectacle. Many Gifts Received. Surveying tho great pile of presents and mass of letters that have poured Into the White Houho for several days rast, President Tafe remarked to a group of nowspaper men, with a broad r in lie, an enlargement of tho famous Taft Binlle: "All this Is for the president of the United States, boys Mrs. Taft." Really the White House today would put to shame almost any jewelry store in the country. Havana, June 19 The work of re moving the mud that covers the ex posed portions of the wreck of the Maine was begun. Streams of water at high pressure were employed. In many places the material covering f o decks and filling the Interior spaces to a depth of several feet, heretofore supposed to ho harbor silt, proves to be a coral like formation, defying re moval by water pressure and necessi tating much tedious work with picks. It is probable that little more pumping will be done for several days. Old Settler Gone. Craig. Neb., June 19 P. S. Olbbs, ttin oldest man In Craig, died here after a short Illness, lie was eignty two years old. He was one of the California "49ers." and came here through Montana and Idaho In 18i!9. He was the first homesteader In Hell creek valley, locating first between this place and Tekatnah, and had been an Important factor In the develop ment of the country. Ho leaves an aged wife and three sons. Many Dogs Attested. Auburn. Neb., June 19. Assessor Schellonberg assessed 3t() dogs for Washington precinct in the west end of this county and yet reels sure that all were not listed. One man had ten dogs. The dogs are listed at $5 each, making their value $1,830. SEALSKINS AT PECORD PRICE Green Pelts Sold at $48 in Seattle, and Higher Figure Expected. Seattle, Wash.. June 19. Sealskins sold here for $18, the highest price ever received at this fur agency for green skins. I-aat year the top price reached at any time for the pelts of fur seals was $30. The great scarcity of the herds In the nortr last fall and the protection afforded the animals by the watchful agents of the government prevented fisherman making large catches. This year It Is predicted that the number of skins taken will fall be low all records and that next year the price will coar.up to nearly $100. Four Negro Convicts Killed in Bullpen. Waynesville, N. C, June 19. Four negro convicts were killed, twelve fatally Injured and seventeen guards and convicts hurt by the collapse of the bullpen in which they were housed In a mountain pass in this county. On Account of a Report of a Demon tration Against the Old Executive Extra Precautions Are Taken by Au thorities Sails for Corunna. Vigo, Spain, June 17. Oneral Por flrlo Diaz, former president of Mexico, arrived in the harbor on the steamer Ypiranga, on which he sailed from Vera Cruz, Mexico, May 31. According to such of his plans as were made public prior to hia depar ture from Mexico. General Diaz will continue to Havre, France, later re turning to Spain for an Indefinite stay The YDlranga, after a stop of two hours, proceeded for Corunna. Gen eral Diaz did not land, and during the stay of the vessel no unpleasant inci dent occurred. It was reported that members of the progressive party and workingnien had arranged to express their unfavorable opinion toward the former president in the event that he came ashore. As a precautionary measure the maritime authorities placed a naval guard around the Ypiranga as soon as it ar rived. This guard Included two launch es filled with marines and the gunboat Ilornan Cortez. Only passengers and others duly authorized were permit ted to board the steamer. Ralbino Davallo, tho Mexican charge d'affaires at Lisbon, and Senor Daudon, Mexican consul here, went out to the vessel and greeted the general. Diaz told them that hla health was not satisfac tory and thnt he had suffered greatly during the voyage from an abscess of the jaw bone, which had become trou blesome beforo his departure from Mexico. REBELS REPULSE SOLDIERS War Breaks Out in South Africa and Troopa Engage In Battle. Cape Town, South Africa, June 17. Nine hundred soldiers, taken to Llberte on the steamer Caledonia to reinforce the government troops In that vicinity, recently attacked the rebels and were repulsed. Julea Deve, a citizen of Prance, and Max Hermann, a Belgian, both con nected with the family of General Leconte, loader of the lajt revolution ary movement and who was recently expelled from the country, embarked on the French steamer Quebec for St. Thomas. Thret Sussidiary Concern Forbidden to Stifle Competition in Kansas. . Topeka, June 17. The Kansas su preme court handed down a decision in the state's suit against three sub sidiary companies of the Standard Oil company of New Jersey, prohibiting them from combining to stifle compe tition. The thre companies against which the suit was brought are the Standard Oil company of Indiana, the Standard Oil company of Kansas and the Prairie Oil and Gas company, all subsidiary to the Standard Oil company of New Jersey. Each of these companies is char tered in Kansas to produce, purchase ! From Monday's Dally. Mr. C. M. Sebert of Louisville is in the city attending the trial of the State vs. Maine. ' Mr. James Kennedy and daugh ter, Miss Nora, were Omaha visit ors today, going on the early train. Charles Cummins of Sedgwick, Colorado, arrived Saturday night and is a guest of relatives in this city. Mr. Will Fight was an Omaha passenger on the afternoon train and otherwise procure crude oil, to re i today, where he was called on fine It and to market It." It was brought out in the hearing that the. Prairie Oil and Gas company is the transportation company, purchasing ' the crude on and transporting it to the Standard Oil company of Kansas, which is the refining company. ThH latter turns the refined products over to the standard Oil company of In diana, which is the marketing end of the enferprise. The state asserted that this division of labor showed an alleged agreement between the three. The defendant companies are en Joined from owning stock In each oth er. They are enjoined from selling petroleum or petroleum products cheaper in one part of the state than In another for tho purpose of driving out competition. The Standard Oil company of In diana, the selling company, Is re strained from selling under different brands or trade names oil of the same quality and value. FIRES GUN IN CROWDED ROOM Supervisor Foley Dlcharged Revolver by Accident. Broken How, Neb., Juno 19. Super visor Edward Foley of Merna acci dentally discharged the court house watchman's revolver and the bullet narrowly missed Supervisor Woodruff and plowed through tho side of the building. Mr. Foley was in tho main oiTlces of the temporary court house, located In the Temple theater build Ing. The room was filled with a nura her of employes of the county at the time. Mr. Foley knew It was loaded, but the trigger action was light and the first thing he knew the cartridge exploded. Broken Bow has been Infested with hoboes for the last two weeks and street beggars are also more numerous than usual. Fifty hoboes were Jn the city In one day last week and were ordered out of town. Burlington trainmen have trouble In keeping them off the freights In the local yards and the more daring tramps are riding the passenger cars, on top, beneath and anv place which affords a holding place. Burt county, the first county In the state to file Its as sessment roll with the state board of assessment, Instead of showing an ex pected Increase In values, ahowa marked decrease. Dun's Weekly Review of Trade says: For the first time in many weeks there are signs of recovery from the depression in the iron and steel trade and, while pig Iron continues very dull, there are Increased orders for finished steel, notably In the structural and wire divisions. Mr. Hans Sievers went to Oma ha yesterday to visit his wife at St. Joseph's hospital, and found her on the road to recovery and doing nicely. Next Wednesday the ,new addition to St. Joseph's hos pital will be dedicated. This ad dition will largely increase the wards for patients. Mrs. J: C. Thomas Mor rison, disbursing clerk of the state de partment, told the house committee on expenditures in that department that he had been Instructed, when the miss ing voucher In the Day portrait case under Investigation was found on the floor of his office a few days ago, to keep still about the discovery. This Instruction, he said, was given hltn by Wilbur J. Carr, chief of the consular bureau.
