What This Denouement Implies to the Whole World. Boston, Mny 2Sth.-Pastor Rus sell preached twice here today, lie had large and In tellectual n u (1 I -enoes as usual. We rcjiort one of his discourses from the text, "I go to prepare n place for you; and I will come again and receive you unto myself, that where I am there ye may be also" (John xiv, 2, 3i. The speaker said: Doubtless we all have in mind the fact that we have Just passed the an niversary of our Redeemer's ascension to the right hand of the Father to the highest place in nil the Universe, uext to the Almighty Father. He as cended up where He was before to the spirit plane of being, with added excellence of glory nnd honor, the re ward of Ills fuithfulness nnd obedi ence to the Father's will, even to the sacrificing of His life nt Calvary. He ascended, the Scriptures declare, from the more humble condition of human nature, a little lower than the angels, to the exalted condition of the divine nature far above angels, principali ties and powers nnd every name that Is named. The work for which the Loynn left the heavenly glory has not yet been accomplished. He has suffered, the Just for the unjust, giving Ills life a Ransom-price for all; but this was merely a means toward an end, and that end has not yet been accomplish ed the blessing of Adam and bis fallen race. Thank God, however, that the great, broad foundation has beeu laid. Thanks be to God also that a great preliminary work has been In progress during more than eighteen centuries since Ills ascension. That preliminary work is the preparation of the Church of Christ to follow Him In, faithfulness and self-sacrifice to ex altation with Him to the divine na ture, glory, honor nnd Immortality, which was His reward (II Peter I, 4). A Chaste Virgin Eipoueed. If. in times past, we have too care lessly studied our Bibles ami confused God's special blessing for the Church, ns the Bride of Christ, with His subse quent blessing for the world through Messiah and His Bride, let us do so no longer. Let us note that as the Divine Plan for the salvation of the world could not legin before the com ing of Jesus, except in a typical sense, neither can it begin to operate until the complete selection of the Church until her perfecting ns the "Bride, the Lamb's Wife," In the First or Chief Resurrection. The nutitypical sacrifices which Je sus began still continue to be offered by Him. Those desirous of becoming Ills Bride nnd Joint heirs with Htm In His Kingdom are now qualifying for that exaltation. The Invitation to them is that, renouncing sin nnd ac cepting the Savior, they shall "present their bodies living sacrifices, holy and acceptable to God" following In the footsteps of their Redeemer. In a certain sense this presentation of the entire Church took place, repre sentatively, in the Apostles and others of the Uve hundred brethren who be lieved at the first. They were repre sentatives of the entire Church, nud the acceptance of their sucrllhe nnd their begetting of the Holy Spirit, their espousal at Pentecost, represent ed the acceptance, the begetting and espousal of the entire Church from then until now. We nre merely fol lowing In their steps; we are merely under-members In the same Body "The Church of the first-borns, whose nnrues are written In heaven" (He brews ill, 23). St. Paul distinctly points out that the Chrch Is not yet the Bride of Christ, but merely espoused. He writes, "I have espoused you as a chaste virgin unto one Husband, who is Christ." The period of espousal will not be complete until the close of this Age, when the last member of the Body shall have been nccepted, and when the First or Chief Resurrec tion (to the spirit plane) shall have bcea accomplished the marriage or complete union between Christ and His Bride In the heavenly glory. The Way and the Place. As the Redeemer was the first to as cend to the glorious station of the di vine nature, fur above nngels, princi palities ami powers, and as the Church Is to be Ills associate in that glory, It was necessary that He should precede her to prepare the way. Our Lord's own worthiness of exaltation to the divine nature was witnessed by the I'ntlirr In Hint He rniscd Ilhn from the dead n quickening Spirit, to glory, honor and Immortality. But before the Church could, In nuy sense of the word, be made acceptable In the henvenly courts, It was neces sary that th' Redeemer should "ap pear in the presence of God for us" (Hebrews lx, 2i. it was necessary that He make application or impu tation of the merit of His sacrifice on behalf of the Church before their sacrifices could be "holy nnd accepta ble unto God"; nnd only by their saerl flees and the Divine acceptance of tliem could they be begotten of the Holy Spirit to the new nature, the di vine nature, which they will fully re ceive, If faithful, in the chief resur rection. What force we thus ho Is attached to the Master's words, "I go to prepare a place for you"! Unless He had thus prepared the way, unless lie had be come our Surety, we never could have become acceptable in the Father's sight, and the Redeemer's associates on (lie spirit plane. But there is still another sense in which the Redeemer Is preparing for Ills Church, His fol lowers. He lias, ns their great High Priest, not only opened up the way t God, but He continues to be their in tercessor nnd to appropriate to them of His merit to cover their continual tres passes and short-comings, whl h are the result, not of wilfulness, but of weakness and heredity shortcomings against which they strive, but by which at times they nre overtaken sins of omission if not of commission. How precious to every child of God nre the words of the Apostle, "If we sin we have nil Advocate with the Fa- ! ther, Jesus Christ the Righteous"! Let us. therefore, come with courage to the Throne of heavenly grace that we may obtain mercy nnd find grace to help in every time of need, for we have an High Priest who can be touch ed with the fooling of our Infirmities, having been tempted In nil points like ns we of the new creation nre tempted (I John II, 1, 2; Hebrews Iv, 15. 10). "I Will Come Again." There npH?nrs to be n disposition on the part of many to deny that there will be a second advent of the Re deemer. They reason that what has not occurred In more than eighteen centuries should cense to be exacted. They endeavor to find the fulfilment. the nromlsed second coming of the Savior, In the Pentecostal blessing. But this cannot sntlsfy those who have Implicit trust In the Lord, and who be lieve that the Apostles were his spe cially appointed mouthpieces, for did not the Anostles. long after Pentecost, tell of the second coming of the Lord, and did not Jesus Himself In the last hook of the Bible declare Ills com ing nnd Ills mnrrtage to the Church, His acceptance of her and the giving to her a share In Ills glory ? The erroneous thought that Jesus Is still a nuin and that His second com ing will be ns a mnn In glory nnd no er, hos done much Injury to the Church. It hns turned the nttention of some to looking for nnd expecting Messiah's Empire to be purely an earthly one. It has led others to deny the second coming and the Kingdom entirely. The proper view of our Lord's Ascension to the glory of the di vine nature nnd honor next to the Fa ther, never more to return to earthly conditions, lifts us above the difficul ties mentioned. We now see that the One who will come In power nnd great glory will be a Spirit Being wholly Invisible to man kind, but nevertheless the very same Jesus, the same personality, the same Ego, who whs once amongst men; the same Ego or personality who pre vlously was with the Father on the spirit plane, nnd who humbled Him self to man's estate In order that He might accomplish a work of redemp tion for Adam nnd his race. The Re deemer says of Himself, "I nm He who was dead, nnd behold I nm alive forevermore." And He who was dead, was He not the same One who pre viously was rich nnd for our sakes became poor? Cnn we not, therefore, hold clearly to the distinctions of na ture, nnd yet see through the two changes the maintenance of the orig inal personality? He Will Come In Like Manner. The nngels who appenred to the Apostles when the Master vanished from their sight declared that Ho would come in like manner as He went nwny. Did He go In a blaze of glory witnessed by the whole world of mankind? No! Neither will He so come. Did He go amidst great con vulsions and the blast of trumpets? No! Neither will He so come. Was Ills departure seen nnd known throughout the world? No! Neither will His arrival be seen and known; ns lie declared, Ho will come ns a thelf In the night nnd will be present, unknown to the world. Only a few knew of His departure nnd could tell It to others. In like mnnner a second coming will be known only to the few, who will declare It to such ns have the bearing ear. Concerning this secret nrrlvnl of the lord, "ns a thief In the night," the I post I e declares, "Ye, brrthirn, nre not In darkness, that that day should over take you ns n thief" (I Thessalonlans v, 4". The day of revealmont will come, but It will be after the Bride class, the elect Church. Is with I he Bride groom, a sharer of Ills glory, honor uud Immortality. "When He shall ap pear, ye also shall appear with Illin In glory" (I John III. 2i. The reveal mont will be In llamlng flre-a mani festation of righteousness, opposition to nil things sinful and approval of all things In harmony with the Golden Rule. This will mean at the first n grent time of trouble, an overturning nnd transformation In the world's af fairs. As the Prophet declares, "The rich men shall weep bitterly." Many poor ones doubtless will also weep, for unrighteousness Is not confined to race or class. All evil-doers will nuffer, all well-doers will be blessed. As s ion as this new ruling of Me slah's Kingdom shall come to be thor oughly recognized and appreciated, "the inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness" (Isaiah sxvl, l. Then the great blessing of Emmanuel's Government will kiss away the world's sorrow and tears and death, as a great Sun of Righteousness arising. Mes siah's Kingdom will tlood the earth w it h the light of the knowledge of the goodness of God and with His bless ing, "which maketh rich and nddeth no sorrow therewith." Ignorance, su perstition, sin and death will flee away before the light of that New Dispen sation, nnd only those who resist It wilfully will be smitten with the Sec ond Death. Rule With a Rod of Iron. The great heavenly King nnd Ills Bride will rule man's affairs with a rod of iron, w hich will break in pieces and destroy Institutions contrary to the Golden Rule. This power over the na tions belongs to the Redeemer and will be nhared. ns promised, with Ills Church. But first, before that mani festation of the Kingdom in power and glory nnd with flaming fire, will coma the Master's parousia, or secret pres ence, unknown to the world-known only to the "wttehers" to the saints, through their understanding of the Divine 'prophecies, to which their eyes of understanding will ln opened. In the harvest time lie will be pres ent to gather the wheat Into Ills gar ner, through the change of the Chief Resurrection, which will take place la a moment. In the twinkling of an eye, been use '"Hosh nnd blond cannot in herit the Kingdom of God." During this period of ptiriniHiu, preceding the outward manifestation to the world, the Heavenly Lord, Invisible to men, will Judge amongst those who have professed to be Ills servants determin ing which may enter into the Kingdom and share Its glories, nnd which hare been unprofitable servants, who may not share with Him In the Kingdom glory, because they have failed to share with Him In the sacrifice and Ignominy of tho present time. This Judging of the Church Is partic ularly Indicated In two of our Lord's parables relating to the pounds nnd th talents given to His servants when II took Ills departure. In Ills paronato He will reckon with Ills servants, re warding the faithful with a share with, Him In Ills Kingdom, saying, "Well done, good nnd faithful servant, thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things; enter thou Into the Joys of thy Iiord have thou dominion over two cities, over five cities, etc. (Matthew zxv, 21; Luke xlx, 10-18). The garner ing of the wheat, the chnnge of the saints, will be the marriage or union with their glorious Head nnd Bride groom. Meantime, those purposing to le of the Bride will make themselves ready and assist each other In prepara tion for the glorious consummation of their most wonderful hopes. The Thousand-Year-Judgment Day of the World. The Master said, "My word shall Judge you In the Inst day." Happy has It been for the few who have heard the Master's Word In this present life, and have Judged themselves thereby, and submitted themselves to Ilia righteous precepts! These blessed one will share with Messiah the glories of Ills Spiritual Empire, Invisible to men. But during the Thousand Year-Judgment Day of the world (II Peter lit, 7, 8) the same words "the wonderful words of life" to those who will obey and words of death to those who will refuse obedience will be the stand ards of Justice for all mankind. This Judgment of the world will not be merely of those living nt the tlmo of the establishment of the Kingdom, but will Include nil that are In their graves (John v, 23). As nil are con demned through one man's d i sotted I ence, so the redemption for nil will be accomplished through the obedlenct of One, which will secure to each and all nn opportunity for eternal life, either on the spirit plane, dining this Gosk1 Age, or on tho earthly plane to Pnrndlse restored, during Messiah' reign. The Judgment of the Church la not according te works, the perfec tion of which, under prevailing condi tions, would be Impossible, hence, the Church's Judgment Is according to faith and the obedience of faith pos sible. But the world's Judgment will be according to works, for the knowl edge then will be so great that faith will no longer be at a premium. Th grent Mediator will accept of Imper fect works nccordlng to the nblllty of the people; but, ns they rise out of degradation, more nnd more will be re quired of them, until in the end they will be perfected nnd absolute perfec tion of works will be required. Then death and the grave will h swallowed tip In the nntltyplcnl y hninii of annihilation "the Second Death" and all not worthy of record In the Book of Life will 1k destroyed from amongst the people (Revelntlon xx. 12-1."; Acts III. 22). But, thank God, this Irremediable destruction of the Second Death will come only upon wilful evil-doers of the class mentioned in this text often re proved and yet stiff necked. Some of the Church might be classed In this category because of previous enlighten ment, etc., enjoyed, but surely tho world In general has not bad such re proofs nnd such an Intelligent under Handing of the Lord ns would mnk fhetn properly amenable to the Second Death. And God purposes that ever.? iiember of Adam's race must have thl Mio full, complete privilege and npor. luiilty for eternal life before he can bo icnteneed to the Second Death.
