HARROW ESCAPE FROM
OF
E
From Saturday's Dnlly.
Yesterday afternoon while clean
ing a skirt with gasoline, Mlsa Etha
Crabill met with an accident that,
under less favorable circumstances,
might have resulted In the death of
the young lady. She had several
quarta of gasoline in a tub contain
Ing the garment she was endeavoring
to clean, and was stamping the Bame
with one of the corrugated suction
cleaning devices, when the rapid
stamping process seemed to generate
sufficient friction and heat to Ignite
the gasoline, and in a moment the
surroundings were a mass of flames,
In which the young lady thought she
was completely enveloped. The
flames leaped to a tremendous height,
but she succeeded In getting away
with but very slight Injury, her cloth
ing catching fire, but by retaining
presence of mind she succeeded In
extinguishing the fire without Injury.
It is needless to state that the skirt
under process of cleaning was com
pletely destroyed.

A Gain of Twenty Per Cent Since the Last Census Speaks Well
For Plattsmouth and Her People.
As a result of the last census the
city of Plattsmouth has gained in
the past ten years twenty per cent in
population, which shows a healthy
condition for the city.
The population of this city now, as
shown by the last report, is 5,975,
being a gain of 1,000 persons over
the previous count.
The county shows an Increase In
population in about the same num
ber, and now passes the 25,000 mark,
being 25,596, and places the county
in a higher class thau formerly.
' The result will Do o boost the

under the lower population class was
entitled to retain fees to the amount
0f $1,500.00, under the new order
0f things will retain $2,500.00, and
hi8 deputy $1,500.00. The county
judge will now get $2,000.00 and hla
deputy $1,000.00, the same to be

the county, Instead of aa formerly to
be retained from the fees of the
office, which some years would pay
the salary allowed, while other years
it would fall short of the required
amount.

deputy will receive the sum of
$1,500.00. The new arrangement
will prove quite satisfactory to the
different offices affected.
The office of county attorney,
which Is one of the moat laborious In
the county, is one which has drawn
the lightest sallary, under the old
arrangement, and this office would
not be overpaid should the new regu
lation double the salary of the public
prosecutor.
But unfortunately the increase is
not sufficient under the law, to make
any change In salary for the county
attorney. The statute fixes the salary
of this office in counties having from
20.000 to 30,000 population at
$1,000 per annum, and allows noth
ing for deputy hire. The legislature
for the last several sessions have in
creased the duties of the several
county attorneys, but have failed to
provide any increase In remuneration
for the Increase in work.
The data for the above statement
of the Increase in population Is taken
from facta compiled by the Kenyon

Iowa, and taken from the U. S. census
report.,
