Mrs. J. M. Palmer returned to her

John, son of J. II. F. Rudge, has
been on the sick list this week.
Miss Selm a Marquardt, of Millard,
spent Sunday with Avoca relatives.
Miss Ella Meyers visited with her
aunt, Mrs. Knabe, at Berlin over Sun
day.
T. W. Malcolm left Thursday for
Lexington where he will visit rela
tives. Thos. H. Straub was a business
visitor at the State Capital several
days this week.
Mrs. P.' Nutzman left Wednesday
for Bertrand, where she will visit re
latives a few days.
J. M. Dunbar who has been suffer
ing with the mumps, was able to be
in town Tuesday.
It Is rumored that Samuel John
son and E. Nutzman will purchase

Henry Kuhnhenn has been having
the seige of Erysljpelas, but Is some

Miss Pearl Harmon returned from
Lincoln Saturday evening where she

Geo. Maseman and wife and Ed
ward Mohr and wife were at Nebras
ka City Sunday, called there by the
death of a relative.
E. G. Spencer has purchased a
lumber yard at Huntley. Mr. Spen
cer left Wednesday to take charge of
same. .We wish him success.
Mrs. Florence Durham returned
Tuesday evening from Bertrand,
where she has been visiting her
daughter, Mrs. A. J. Nutzman.
The Odd Fellows were busy Thurs
day evening conferring the degree on
a candidate. A large crowd were
present to witness the work.
J. C. ZImmers and wife entertain
ed a party of their friends last Thurs
day at Summer Set. A very pleas
ant time was reported by those pre
sent. Dan Fleishman has purchased the
D. Stcffens residence In cast Avoca
and will soon become a resident of
our thriving little city. Mr. Steffens
and wife will leave about April 1 st.
for Germany, where they will spend
the summer.
Mr. and Mrs. W. H. netts, sr., gave
a farewell party on Tuesday evening
for their son Clarence, who will
leave this week for Coffeyville, Kan
sas, where he has a good position.
A large crowd of his young friends
were present to bid him farewell.

Orlando Tefft was at Omaha this
week on business.
Geo. Trook was at Union visiting
his many friends last Wednesday.
Mrs. Chas. Wood, of Talmage, Is
visiting with relatives east of town.
Peter Jorgensen, the land and
cattle king, of Avoca precinct, has
purchased another eighty acre farm
near Weeping Water. If Peter
keeps up the clip he has been going
the past few years he will own the
larger portion of Cass county.
School Notes.
Marie Dowley is in school again
after two week's absence, being
sick.
The Literature Club will meet with
Mrs. Keedy next Monday.
The Caesar class is reading book
No. 3.
The seventh and eighth grades
have been doing some very fine map
work.

day. Charles Gerlach chipped a car load
of cattle to Omaha Wednesday.

the sick bed of their cousin, Mrs. J.

A large gang of graders passed
through this place today enroute to
South Bend where they will be em
ployed doing some heavy stripping
for Hugh Murphy in his quarries at

from the north and crossed the river
here. Mr. Murphy Is developing a
number of big quarries near Louis
ville. Stripping Is being started
here In a new grade In the old Stout
quarrUs.
The Burlington railroad at this
place Is commencing some extensive
work along the river east of here
where It has a number of gangs of
men working putting In rip-rap
where there Is danger of a washout
of track or overflowing of the
river.
Representative Charles E. Noyes
arrived In Louisville Tuesday from
Lincoln from- whence he had come In
his automobile. He was accom
panied by Arthur L. Palmer of this
place who Is attending the university
of Nebraska. Mr. Noyes will return
to Lincoln Monday.
The Weekly Ijite.
Owing to the fact that office has
been torn up while Installing a new
Babcock press, the Journal Is com
pelled to Issue Its paper this week one
day late. An additional cause for
the delay Is that the office Is overrun
with Job work and between the two
causes the weekly is necesRarilv
made one day behind. The Journal
hopes that Its many subscribers will
bear with the delay and as Boon as
the additional equipment is fully In
stalled it Is not believed further de
lays will occur.

At the Presbyterian church last
nifiht occurred the annual meeting of
the congregation. At this time there
was heard the reports of the secre
taries and treasurers of the various
organizations of the churi h. Th
showed a healthy Interest and an In
creasing determination to make the
coming year a much better one than
the past.
The financial showing of the year
ought to be of interest to everybody.
It developel that there had been
given to Home Missions $74. To For
eign Missions $3S. To education $43
To Sabbath school board $10. To
church erection $5. To ministerial
general assembly $18.30. Miscellan
eous $30. To congregational ex
penses $6,892.64. Of this sum $5,100
went to liquidate the church debt.
The following officers were elect
ed: Geo. L. Farley to succeeed him
Belf as trustee for a term of three
years. O. C. Dovey to succeed H.
A. Schneider as trustee for a term
of three years. Mr. Farley was
elected to the treasurershlp for a
term of one year.

Joe Wiles and wife came In this
noon from thir home near the city
and were passengers on the fast
mall for the metropolis where they
will spend the afternoon.
Adam Stoehr and wife were pas
sengers on the fast mail at noon for
Omaha where they will visit with
relatives and friends at the hos
pital. Among those whom they will
visit Is Mr. Stoehr's sister Mrs. Geo.
Hell who has been at the hospital
several weeks and who Is reported to
getting along finely and recovering
rapidly from her operation. They
will also call upon Mrs. John Lohnes
who has also been In the hospital for
several weeks and who Is doing very
nicely on her way toward recovery.
