Too Close to the Text.
The editor of the Liberty, (Mo.)
Tribune the other day warned a new
reporter to write nothing unless he
knew it to be absolutely true. Next
day he handed in the following society
item: "It is rumored that Mrs. Smith,
who claims to reside on South Chesnut
street, gave a so-called dinner party
to a number of her alleged friends.
She asserts that they all had a good
time. In the progressive euchre feat
ure which followed the dinner, Mrs.
Brown, who claims to be the wife of
Postmaster Brown, was the successful
one." The reader can readily see how
such events appear when requested to
stick too close to the text as the re
porter of the Tribune was requested
to do.
