Miss Eveline Golden, who has been
teaching at the brick school house,
closed her term last Friday and re
turned to her home in South Bend
Saturday.
The little child of Mr. and Mrs. Will
Joiner died in Nebraska City and was
buried Monday at two o'clock'. Mr.
and Mrs. Jos.' Burton and Mrs. John
Cook of Murray were in attendance.
Say, cow, the party that, wrote this
don't care, but don't you think that
if the business men in this town would
spend a little more time working on
the dirt on Main street, and a little
less loafing, we would have a better
looking town. Those holes ought to
be filled up.
A Sad Story.
During the last snow storm a few
days ago, a little eight-year-old boy
was picked up along the highway east
of Murray, near the farm where Jake
Smith. The little fellow was bare
footed so the residents of Murray say,
and almost without clothing. He was
brought to Murray and at first refus
ed to tell any tales, but such bearings
were brought upon the lad that he
said his name was Vanstock, and that
he resided near Nehawka, and that
his father had driven him from home,
telling him to go to Plattsmouth and
remain a few days and return. He
further stated that his father had
whipped his mamma, and when ques
tioned, he said that his father was
drunk at the time. The lad was very
cold and hungry after hislong journey.
The authorities took charge of the
boy and late in the evening his moth
came for him, and he was taken home,
after he had been comfortably provid
ed with clothing and otherwise taken
care of. If the lad's story is true,
something should be done with such a
parent, and the proper authorities
would certainly do a charitable act in
looking after such a matter.
Married In Lincoln.
J. E. Gruber and Miss Feme Ruby,
arrived in Plattsmouth this morning
from near Mynard, and took the morn
ing train for Lincoln, where today
they will be united in the holy bonds
of matrimony. Both young people are
and have all their lives been residents
of Cass county, where they are most
highly respected. The marriage cere
mony will be a quiet affair in the
capital city today, after which they
will spend a few days visiting friends
and relatives in various points, and
return to Cass county the latter part
of the present week to make their
future home. The Journal joins with
the many friends at home in extend
ing hearty congratulations.

j 4. During tlio week the total snow
fall throughout the district ranged
from four to fourteen inches and as a
rule was heavy with moisture and some
cases accompanied with more or less
rain; so the moisture which actually
reached the ground was considerable.
There is now no place in Nebraska
actually In need of moisture.
Winter wheat was at a standstill
during the week, sufferiug no damage,
however. Spring grain not only made
no progress during the week, but was
probably somewhat damaged by the
cold weather and snow storms.
The soil has been in very fair con
dition for plowing and work has pro
gressed well. Practically no corn has
been planted, but the ground has been
very generally prepared for the crop
and with seasonable weather the plant
ing will progress very fast. It is not
late for corn planting and there is no
reascn why the crop may not be gotten
into the j: round in good season, vith
favorable weather from now on.
The potato crop is generally planted,
but has made no progress and it is not
unlikely that in some cases the seed
has rotted in the ground.
In places half the sugar beet crop
has been planted and has not been
damaged by cold weather.
Like vegetation, stock has not done
much during the last week except
keep alive. There seems to be no
doubt that all the fruit is killed.

Will Enlarge Hall.
At a recent meeting of the T. J. So
kol society, it was unanimosly decided
to enlarge their hall in the western
part of the city, and make many much
needed improvements otherwise. An
addition of twenty feet will be placed
on the north end, water works will be
added, and the tloors will be made of
concrete. A shower bath system will
be added, also a new library room.
The society are determined to have a
modern hall in every detail, one that
every member can boast of. In order
to assi.st in defraying the expenses of
the above mentioned improvement,
j they have decided to give a ball on
Saturday evening. May Everyone
in favor of tbe new undertaking should
attend the dance and lend a helping
hand.

District Court Convenes.
Judge Jessen arrived in Plattsmouth
this today and district court con
vened this afternoon, the first case be
ing that of tbe State of Nebraska vs
A. N. Sullivan, and at the time of go
ing to press the evidence in the case is
being heard.
A new case was filed today in the
matter of the village board of Avoca
granting a saloon license to F. M.
Ruhge, in which an appeal is taken to
the district court, and a remonstrance
with the following endorsements filed
to prohibit tbe granting of such li
cense: John B. Carter, S. S. Sriner,
Mrs. F. Durham, Sarah M. Pittman
and J. II. Siacatt. The remonstra
tors claim that the granting of said
licens was illegal for several reasons,
among which were that Mr. Ruhge's
wife and two daughters signed his pe
tition, which is unlawful. II. G.
Wellensiek, attorney, appears for the
remonstrators. The case will be heard
some time during the present term.
