Barnum departed yesterday for East Springfield, N. Y., to attend the funeral of his aunt, a sister of Mrs. Eliza Barnum. The announcement of the death came by telegram Wednes day evening. Fleshman, who lives east of Avoca, died at the home of his father Wednes day evening. The young man had been sick for some time but was not thought to be in dangerous condition and his sudden demise was a great shock to his parents and friends. Def- finate funeral arrangements have not yet been made, but the services will probably be held in Avoca. A Telegram was received here by relatives stating that Joseph Beaudett died Tuesday evening at his home near Bancroft, and although but meager report could be had, we under stand that his death was the result of heart desease and that he had been sick about two weeks with other ail ments. He and his family were resi dents of this vicinity for a number of years, moving to ihurston county about nine years ago. Mr. Beaudett was a member of the of the M. W. A. lodge at this place many years, and always known as an excellant neighbor and citizen. His daughter, Mrs. James Wilson, left for Bancroft Wed nesday to attend the funeral. Calloway Ashlock and Miss Docia Edmisten went to Nebraska City Wed nesday morning and applied to County Judge Wilson for the necessary docu ment to be made husband and wife. They returned that evening and received a cordial welcome, a large number of their relatives and friends joining in an elaborate reception and wedding supper at the heme of the bride's par ents southeast of town. The bride is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. W. Edmisten, and is a young lady whose popularity is merited by reason of her kind and social disposi tion, making her a favorite among her associates. The groom is a well known young man, an energetic farmer who has the esteem and confidence of all who have formed his acquaintance. They will make their home on one of the Hall farms southeast of this vil lage. St. Lucian, Grenada and St. Vincent were destroyed: 1400 houses wero blown down at Port Royal, on the Island of Martinque. Not a house was left standing at St. l'ierre; over 5,000 persons lost their lives at St. Eustatia alone. On October 11, 1741, a destructive storm occurred in India. The water rose 40 feet higher than ev er before known, and it is estimated that nearly :00,000 perished. Over 1, 000 vessels were wrecked. A notable earthquake occurred on Nov. 1, 17",5, when the city of Lisbon was reduced in almost an instant to a heap of ruins, and about :J0.OO0 people lost their lives. A Valentine Party. The home of Mr. and Mrs. U- L. Wiles, westcf town, was the scene of much merriment Thursday evening, when a number of young people gath ered in honor of St. Valentine. As each lady left the dressing room a red heart tied with ribbon, was pinned to her dress, and on each gentleman's coat was pinned white keys with red ribbon. These caused much guessing until time for refreshments, when the gentlemen, in turn, shot with a bow and arrow atthegroupof hearts which the ladies had pinned to a curtain. Mr. Carl Cole proved to be the best marksman. In this manner partners were obtained for the delicious lunch eon, which was serded by the hostess assisted by Mrs. E. V. Cole. On account of the washouts near LaPlatte and the damaged bridge ov er the riatte river, the Missouri Paci fic resumed service with Omaha yes terday on the Burlington line from Oreapolis northward. The first pas senger train to attempt the new line jumped the tracks near Oreapolis last night, and several hours were required to replace the truant engine, which was derailed on account of the soft roadbed. The work of filling in the washouts near LaPlatte is under the supervision of the division superin tendent of the Missouri Pacific, and although a pile driver and crew have been steadily at work for several days, it will boubtless be as many more before the roid will be in shape to handle traffic on the line to Omaha.
