Mrs. Dr. A. E. Merkels' mother of

visiting with the doctor this week.
Dr. A. E. Merkel reports that Mr.
J. Plant is rapidly improving from his
siege of typhoid . fever, which speaks
well for our doctor, as the case was a
bad one.
Every town has its knockers of some
sort or another. Usually some one
who is trying to attend to other peo
ples business when they are not cap
able of attending to their own. And
we seem to be blessed with those that
circulate anonymous letters, trying to
defame or otherwise injure respectable
people. Recently a letter was sent
out and signed "An Old Soldier," and
the sole purpose of this letter was to
injure the standing of some of our
best citizens. Now, if this "old sol
dier's statements were based on facts,
wouldn't it be just as easy to sign his
or her right name as it would to sign
something like an "old soldier" or "a
friend?" Anyway, in our estimation,
a person of good reason would not be
guilty of such a misdemeanor, there

goodies, and as only farm life can put
up. It is needless to say that ample
justice was done to each and every
dainty. The afternoon was spent
playing games, chatting, smoking,
tasting malt and hops, etc. After the
ladies had prepared supper, to which
as much justice was done as to the
dinner, all departed for home with
the thought predominating "We had
a good time."
The other surprised person was a
little Miss whose 14th birthday was
celebrated, Dora Stohlmann. Miss
Dora was the receiver of many pretty
presents. Those present were, Alwino,
Paul and Amanda Jung; George,
Louise, Adelia, Mary, July, Bertha
and Clara Stohlmann; George, Clara
and Molly Kraft; Olga and Esther
Vogler; Minnie Pankonin; Louise

Koehler and last but not least Dora's
teacher, George Jung, of whom she
thinks a great deal. The afternoon
was enjoyed as only little folks can
